  1. Well, water at Genny has come up. Top of docks are only 4 ft above water line. Couple weeks ago they were 4'2" Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. Go to the alan tani site & scroll thru the tutorials. He has a tremendous amount of knowledge & is willing to share it. http://alantani.com/ Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. Don't know who's the bigger moron him or gun advocate Dick Chenny. (The republican VP shot his hunting partner back in '06 while bird hunting) Guess all politicians should have a mental exam. Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. USACE expects 2" rise in Lake Ontario over next month: http://ftp.great-lakes.net/envt/water/levels/levelsinclude.html Wish it was 12-14". Tom B. (LongLine) (That's what she said)
  5. I've plugged mine with a screw & 5200 about 6 years ago. Not leaking yet. Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. Actually most scientists agree the Pacific Salmon that travel between the southern part of California and the Alaskian rivers actually navigate by sensing the earth's magnetic field. That, according to some fishermen out there, is why they have begun switching from lead to steel downrigger weights. They've discovered that if magnetized correctly, they have great days out there. Probably what their dept of resources has seen to justify shortening their season and such... overfishing. Only problem I see is if you magnetize it so that north is to the front, will salmon only hit your lure from the front? Myself, I'd magnetize it so the north is toward the rear as we've all seen the strike vision videos where the salmon only hit from the rear. Maybe that's what all this ionic stuff is bout. Positive gives you a north field whereas neg gives you a south field? North, South, Positive, Negative...What happened to the good old days when all you had to worry about was speed, trolling direction, time of day, size of line, cloud cover, time of year, wind direction, wave height, water temperature, depth of water, location of thermocline, color of lure, number of lines, length of line, kinks in cable, barometric pressure, oxygen content, type of bottom, seaweed, Fleas, other boats, whether John Law was around and of course "who's going to get the last donut?" 7. I definitely try to match them as best as I can. I also try to run a matched spoon below them.... Tom B. (LongLine)
  8. What? Nobody got this one yet? Tom B. (LongLine) (hope I spelled everything right)
  9. Do some experimenting before you invest anything. Here's a test for you: Buy yourself a cheap multi-meter. With your boat on the trailer and rigger mounted, uncrank weight 2 feet below boat. Put a piece of metal on the ground (dirt, earth) behind your boat. Turn your ignition to on. Touch weight with one lead (low scale) and piece of metal with other. Now move the leads to the steering tab above the prop and the piece of metal. Did you get any voltage? Fiberglass has very low conductivity. i.e. basically an insulator. Manual riggers mounted to the glass hull should not pick up a charge from the boat. Also remember that water is a pretty good conductor and conductors dissapate charge very quickly. If you have electrics, it might be a different story, but it still needs to be tested out first. (Don't believe everything you read on the internet.) Tom B. (LongLine0
  10. There's a really big difference with blowback with the 150 vs 200 Lb coated cable running a 12 Lb ball more than 50 ft down. It really doesn't take much to check for kinks in cable. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. yep. I use the 3/0 siwash, sticky sharp. I've found that trolling a little faster with a single hook on NK's is better. Tom B. (LongLine)

  13. Now that's my kind of tree house.......boat. Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. That's pretty cool! Great idea! Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. Follow the link to alan tani. He has a fabulous section on the 320's. Even I was able to completely dissaemble all of mine by following his pix & explanations. It's actually quite easy. Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. Exactly. Many politicians were encouraged to try it as a "help" to getting people back into fishing NYS; trying for the Salmon & Trout; supporting the local economies; boosting license sales, etc. i.e. "Try it & see what happens." Michigan tried it, like it and made it permanent. Sure looks to me like it has helped! Our legislators need to be reminded of that. Tom B. (LongLine) BTW - H.B - lot of people have said that about you......and me.
  17. Can't spearhead it this year but here’s some ammunition (2 quotes) for those letters, calls & emails from the preliminary 2012 report: Total boat trips for Trout & Salmon: 2010 – 50,059 2011 – 49,548 2012 – 46,059 Effort would have been much higher - Look at what happened to water levels during August & September– you couldn’t get out on the lake due to low water. License sales did increase during this period: http://www.outdoornews.com/August-2012/Great-fishing-solid-license-sales-in-New-York/ http://www.outdoornews.com/August-2012/New-York-fishing-second-the-none/ Tom B. 19. Didn't want to give your hot spot away.... (How could I miss the most famous of them all?) Tom B. (LongLine)
  20. Yep really low so far. I was at the genny this morning and #1 ramp doesn't look like it's going to be useable in March. Tom B. (LongLine)

  24. 50 years ago, my father told me if you put an outboard on a boat, "you better bolt it or have a safety chain on it." Well, for many years I ran on just the big engine(which is bolted) but I was having some trouble with the big engine a couple years ago so I built a fixed bracket for an older 9.8 Mercury. I took the kicker along "just in case" the beast died on me when I was 6 miles out. Well, it took a while but that problem got fixed. The bracket would only allow it to tilt when it was turned in one direction. At high speed the kicker's lower unit was completely out of the water. Last year I had a few more problems I so, needless to say, I took the extra time to put the kicker on...again, just "in case." So anyways, I'm out there and I say why not crank the little guy up and make sure it's running okay. (It's always run great in a bucket) I've never trolled with the little guy out on the open water but just for giggles, I decided to pull on it & troll. After about 1/2 hr, I go back to the big guy. After another hour, ok, time to go in. I'm making the run in from way out there and I get about 1/4 mile from the river. So being safety minded and there's a lot of boats around, I slow down fairly rapidly...too rapidly. As I'm looking behind me, I see the little guy tilting and being lifted up in the air. I had put it in neutral, it had turned, and somehow the screw clamps loosened up. The drag in the water as I slowed down pushed it upward.(Neutral locks the older mercs in the down position) The only thing holding the little guy to the boat and completely submerged under a foot of water was the safety chain. As it was, the hood came off and was slowly sinking. By the time I got it in the boat, the hood had sunk completely out of sight. Got it home & was able to revive it okay, less the hood. Took a while but finally got one on e-bay that took some patching up and about $75 in hardware. So anyways... Make sure you have a safety chain on the engine! Tom B. (LongLine) BTW, I've rebuilt the bracket to raise it up a couple more inches; allow it to be pulled up in any position and I've also used a wood bit to drill a couple shallow holes for the screw clamps to fit into. Knock on wood that this never happens again.
  25. No matter what kind of bracket you use or what size/type kicker you have - Make sure you have a safety chain on the engine! Tom B. (LongLine)
