  1. Watch out for letting them jump into the water...that water is COLD! You may want to work out a compromise with the type of fishing. A fast boat ride, an hour of trolling, another fast boat ride then an hour of worm dunking. Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. Ditto the foam. I had to replace mine on an 18 ft'r. It gets awful heavy. Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. Big Dave just let out a secret. Red disappears in the visible spectrum at certain depths, but fish have more cones in their eyes than humans do. They can see red deeper than we can with those uv cones. Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. Ray's boxes work great. I make my own dividers by ripping a cutting board, cutting the slots in them & screwed them in. Also I use tubes for flies. (but make sure you have some vent holes in the caps so residual water can dry) Ray - Do use a treble or siwash with that bait? ....Actually I find cats make great tire tread lubrication. Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. Ditto with Skipper19 & Gill-T. A double flying solo is rough on the ticker. Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. Having a little guy on the boat means you need 6 eyes & lots of patience. When my oldest was 3 or 4 ...(long long time ago) I bought a toy tug boat (They were cheap back then). Tied a string on it & let him tow it behind. Of course, he wore a life jacket & was teethered too. 33 yrs later, he still remembers it. Try letting him steer but give him a target to head for. (Patience Dad!) See if he can follow the compass heading. Also to yell out when something comes across the fish finder. Let him pick out some of the lures. Also check for seaweed often. Let him reel it in to check. See if he can predict which rod will fire first. Pretzels make the best snacks. If you have a canvas top boat, put the canvas up so he sits in the shade. Make up a travel game between the two of you. (Just like the travel game with horses & cememtaries) First one to spot a cabin cruiser yells "ZIP." 1st one to spot a speed boat/ragboat/freighter/floating log yells "dunk your cruisers." Of course you have to have some "Zips" in order to dunk the other guys cruisers. Good luck, Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. I was a ways west of you today. (Russell) 1. Did you see "minnows" jumping out of the water to get away from them? If not, they were probably steelhead or atlantics chasing bugs. There were bugs all over out there today. I saw a few small swirrels within 20 ft of my boat. 2 &3. Very possible planners would have helped somewhat. If there's 2 or more of you on the boat then definitely put at least one planner board out this time of year. Fish may be out over deep water but they were not generally deep in the water column. (other than the big Kings & Lakers) Tom B. (LongLine)
  8. Fishing Report LongLine Launched at 5:30. No one else around. Guess the "Rib Fest" scared them off. Couldn't get a picture of the sunrise as I don't think I saw the sun till about 9:30. (heavy clouds) Flat as a mill pond out there. Headed toward Russell & can you say "chocolate"? Brown water out to about 80 FT. Low 50's on surface. Put in at about 95 FOW; worked out to 250 FOW then back in, closer to River. Only saw one bait pod & that was in 125 FOW. Did see a few "heavy" marks near bottom over 170. Man where did those flies come from...take your bug spray with you. 49F on surface at 250. 6-8 other boats eventually out there. Anyways 1 shaker king (clipped) at 45 over 190 on a NK Glo Clown, 25 ft back and a small Rainbow on a DW Dolphin at 25 over 215, also about 25 ft back. Long leads didn't work today. Pulled them up at 11:30. Water is very high at the river. 6 trailers in the lot. Looks like they're getting ready to start collecting launch fees. Luck to all. Tom B. (LongLine)
  9. I haven't had a real problem fishing out of Roch unless you want to count that Fast Fairy fiasco; the concrete ship in the fog; those morons that cruise within 100 ft of you throwing a 3 ft wake; a few ragboats every year that sail real close to see if you're catching anything (while your fighting a fish solo) and of course the rest of the ragboats that set up their race course where you're fishing, just as the bite turns on. them all.... 10. Happy B-day Rick. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. Torpedo shaped weights (even Herbie's) will have less blowback than balls. Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. I would not advise the center nor any side position where their is any chance the cable could go in front of the lower unit.. Best if run off a rear corner & straight back. 45 deg at worst. Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. Two dipsies, running solo can be a real challenge. 1 dipsey & 1 rigger much easier. Two riggers easiest. 90% of my time is 2 riggers. A lot depends on how well you can control the boat, while not at the helm. Waves & depth also are important factors. Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. Congrats...Definitely a keeper. Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. Nice... Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. Torpedo shaped weights will reduce the blowback. Even an 8Lb Herbie has less than a ball. Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. Happy B'day Chad Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. Obviously my ole Buddy's grandson - An '11 Ranger, but with a tow package. Salesman said "go for it" but warranty says don't tow till it has 1,000 mi on it, so next weekend for sure. Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. I had to say goodbye to an old friend of about 17 years this week. We chalked up a lot of miles together. He wasn’t my 1st mate but just like a fishing buddy, he helped me launch the boat every time. He wasn’t into fishing like me and he actually preferred to stay at the launch/park area, watching others trying to launch, while I went out on the lake for a couple hours. I imagine he saw a lot of antics over the years. He was well respected as nobody ever bothered him. He always kept his cool and never became overheated as a lot of others did, even on those hot summer days. That’s not to say we didn’t have issues over the years, but I was always able to mend them. Guess it was a few years back when his problems really became noticeable. At first he developed a little wobble after hitting a pothole on life’s bumpy road, but I managed to straighten him out before it became too serious. Then he was plagued with joint problems which were really bad when they acted up. Last year his body started showing some serious signs of deteriation and he eventually just didn’t have the stamina nor zip of his youth anymore and really began slowing down. Last month I got him some new wheels just so he could get around better. Saturday, the writing was on the wall. He developed a major case of flatulence & I don't know the medical terms but guess he just blew some internal gaskets. So I took that hunk of scrap to the dealer and bought a new truck! Tom B. (LongLine) p.s. RIP - ’94 Ranger; 246.5K miles; 3.0L; 21.2 mpg over the last 5,000 miles.
  20. Graet to hear the old man's back into it. Nice Atlantic. Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. Wonder where I heard this before? Hmmm…maybe dejavue?....(for anyone that doesn’t know, those words were originally coined right here on LOU.) Unfortunately politicians that don’t know their own rules are running the show. The law specifically says anglers can use two LINES Mr. Stang and ALL the rules are not based on that. I.E. ice fishing can use more lines & trot lines are perfectly legal in NYS for sportsfishing. Tom B. (LongLine)
  22. Townsend (outgoing Chairman of NYPA) doubts viability of offshore windfarms. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/art ... wind-farms In the words of Dr Watson: "no $hit Sherlock." Tom B. (LongLine)
  23. Fish food...poor fish - hope they don't get belly-aches.
  24. Nothing like a snakeshead. It's gut fin would be same size as upper & squared off: Tom B. (LongLine)
  25. As usual Hank is right. However please realize that NYS law says each angler can only use two LINES, with or without rods. Additionally, it is perfectly okay to have another 27+ rods stored on the boat someplace as long as you're only using two lines per person. Tom B. (LongLine)
