  1. 84 Evin & John's 70 & 75 (same engine) are unregulated. My 75 runs up to 16v when cold but settles back down to 13-14 when warm & trolling. (Changing the cables & new battery helped mine.) If you figure it out please let use know. You may want to ask on Iboats.com. Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. LongLine Launched early today. Clear & calm, barely any wind. Headed west & played around with the kicker in 20 FOW. 1 “real little†guy (King, clipped 8â€r) Quite a few fish swirling in there. Headed out a little & went back to the main engine. Lots of bait in the 42 to 52 FOW range. Seemed like every 100 yds there was a bait cloud on the screen 15-20 ft down, some pods were huge. Anyways lot of shakers in there. Caught 5 as I moved thru the area. 3 had adipose fins. 54F down 35 ft between the doldrums & that’s where they were. Blk & slvr R&R, 2 ¾ downspeed. Moved out & worked 60-75 FOW. Clean screen out there, but got this little Laker at 12 ft down. (go figure…) on a DW Grn Dolphin. Wind came up out of NE about 9:30. Headed in around 11:30. Mud on the west side is gone. Couple Sheriff boats out there, guess they knew about the nice weather. Parking lot now has a launch ticket machine. Have to use coins or credit card. $5 during week & $8 on weekends. (Like who’s going to carry 32 quarters on a weekend????) Sign says it takes mastercard but mine wouldn’t work – but it did take visa. Harborfest is this weekend so 5 carnival trailers in lot. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLIne)
  3. Zeke - The original proposal was intended to help increase the number of fishermen on Big-O by increasing the number of return trips made to that fishery by trollers for T&S, specifically by the "little guys", out-of-staters, retirees etc The original proposal was to eliminate the "Line" law and allow recreational/sportsfishermen anglers (not commercial) on Big-O to use 3 rods for T&S just like out in Michigan. i.e lines must be attached to rods. (note: commercial fishermen are the guys licensed to sell their catch ie charters are not commercial fishermen) The orig proposal was to try it & see if it helped the sportsfisherman fisherman and the economy. (Michigan tried it on the Lake-M then expanded it to all waters) It specifically had no affect on creel limits. However, - Some guys wanted to continue using just "line." - Some guys wanted to use it on the Fingers & statewide - Some guys were afraid it might lead to overfishing The original proposal was, obviously in a way, too much of a complex change for a complete overhaul of existing law and for many to understand, so politically the bill was written to simply change the existing verbiage from "2 lines" to "3 lines". As you said, some downstaters were worried that some saltwater piers might become too crowded so they ammended the bill to be for freshwater only. The longevity part of it is that it is to be in effect for two years. i.e expire on Dec 31 2013. If you remember back in the 90's when snagging T&S became illegal, the number of licenses sold dropped dramatically and many tackle shops closed. This two year period will give the state some time to see if any overall numbers change or not. Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. If the asian carp needed miles of water, they wouldn't have thrived so well in those Arkansas farm ponds. They were in the ponds for a few years before the ponds were flooded. Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. It will go into effect as soon as the governor signs it. Man, that was a lot of work! Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. 3rd on Jay-Vees. Very good for DW, NK's, Stingers& Spin Dr's. Also very good on the live stuff. Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. Docks just south of the old ferry terminal are about 1 1/2 ft above water. Very solid. Concrete ramps that go quite a ways into the water. I've seen many boats over 24 ft launch there. Couple yrs ago I saw Homeland launch their big boat (35-36 ft'r???) there. Couple weeks ago there was a 4 axle trailer parked there that was longer than my trailer & truck put together. Can launch 4 abreast & lot is probably one of the biggest on the south shore. Tom B. (LongLine)
  8. Ditto Tim. Remember this started out as "fishermen on Lake Ontario trolling for Salmon & Trout." Tom B. (LongLine) p.s. It's "consequences" & "bright"
  9. Ditto what gambler said. I caught a bull head one late spring on the surface over 30 ft of water. I always thought they strictly hugged the bottom till that happened. And their "fins" will make you swell up something fierce. Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. Actually Ray, I thought you were going to mention that GPS works on triangulation and that it'll make a difference if you're sitting on Yank's flying bridge (8 ft off the water) or have your butt parked in a kayak. The important part with the probe is that it is repeatable. If it registers 2.5 mph down and you're catching fish, it really doesn't matter if you're actually going 6.2 mph. Just adjust your speed to maintain the 2.5 downspeed & chances are very good that you'll repeat your catch. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. Anyone notice our tsunamis early Saturday afternoon? Layover22 in the intro thread saw it in a creek out his way. You’ll hardly ever notice them because the lake has to be very calm and there has to be some heavy duty seismic activity some place. The water level gauges picked up something very interesting: Olcott Rochester Oswego All of them (around the great lakes) picked it up in the same time period. Here’s Erie PA. Yes we had a drastic barometer change & yes there were some major upwellings on the lake But what’s really interesting is that a volcano erupted down Chile way (South America) and had many (230) earthquakes associated with it (same time period). http://www.volcanolive.com/news.html Tom B. 12. From one TB to another - Happy Birthday. Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. You did the right thing in calling the CG. You honestly thought you were going down. Let them make the call as to come get you, direct other boats in the area to help you, etc. Glad you made it back okay. Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. Let's see. If GPS says I'm doing 3 mph that means I'm going about 4.4 ft/sec. (3mph x 5280 ft/mile)/3600sec/hr = 4.4 ft/sec. Hmm...the best commercially available GPS is only accurate to within 3 ft of your actual position. Hmm... If at time zero your at location zero, then at 1 second you think you've gone 4.4 ft because your GPS reads 3.0 mph but you may have really only gone 1.4 ft or you may have gone 7.4 ft. 1.4 ft/sec is 0.95 mph and 7.4ft/sec is 5.0 mph. Love that TRUE measurement.... Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. Did somje searching. There was a major volcano erruption down in Chile on saturday. Something like 230 earthquakes in 7 around that time. On a perfectly calm day, you can see mini-tsunamis set up on the lake. N0ormally no one can notice them as there's usually some small wind wave action going on. Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. Welcome to the board. Some big upwellings on the Canadian side. Check out the water levels on the south side for 2:00 saturday. Olcott, Rochester & Oswego all registered some interesting blips. http://www.great-lakes.net/conditions/o ... tml#levels Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. End of the month the lake with stratify horizontally. When that happens find the thermocline & fish just above it, below it & in it. Till then, there are a different three distinct temperature phenomena in central Big-O. The near shore is fairly constant. A little further out where your temp probe seems to go "nutz" is where the waters are mixing - upwellings, downwellings, ekert's, laminars, scum lines, the whole shooting match. A little further out it's stable again but quite cold. Our querry seems to like the stable water but will dart into the mixing area if properly temped. Browns on the inside, salmon & Stl hds on the outside. Also factor into the equation some light penetration. On days like this last weekend, they were high in the column - calm & heavy overcast. On bright choppy days they'll generally be a little deeper and on bright calm days they'll generally be deepest. This past weekend the mixing area was at about 60-90 FOW. Next weekend, it may move some due to the weather - sunshine, clouds, wind etc. The last couple days saw a lot of fish swirling & lots caught roughly 30 ft down in 100-200FOW. They were obviously right on the surface and ducked down & away from the boats. Come Mid-August it's a different story. If your central this week, I'd advise starting at about 95 FOW & zigzaging out to about 150FOW & working that area over pretty good. If cloudy, set a rigg'r about 25-30ft down with a fairly short lead. For spoons, run Golds, purples, reds on cloudy days. If bright set it down a little lower & run greens & blues. H.I.H. Tom B. 18. Happy B'day Fx Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. You're reading the RPM in the transmission & it's being converted to a speed. BTW if your spinning your wheels, one wheel is traveling a lot faster than the car. Tom B. (LongLine)
  20. Except when you turn that corner or round that bend. Slip differentials.... Is there a straight road around here, or for that matter a boat traveling in a straight line? Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. LongLine Launched about 5:30, calm with heavy clouds. A look backward: A look forward Headed out to 90FOW between Russell & River then worked out to 210 & back. Scum lines with lots of sticks/branches at 107, 160. 48F on surface out there. Generally 2 degrees less at 40 ft down. A few others out, mostly 100-130FOW but scattered pretty well. Anyways, 4 of these on Purple DWSS at 16 down (short leads): (Stl Hd) And two of these with NK Gold Chicken Wings at 40 down – Naturals. (Again short leads) Clean screen most of the way. Couple large marks near bottom out deep, but could of been almost anything. Occasional light sprinkle – just enough to put the canvas up. Heard on radio that a storm front was just crossing Toronto at 10:15 so picked up & scooted back in. Wind picked up from east on way back in. Lots of limbs in river – just big enough to do some damage if you hit them too fast. Mud plume trailed off to the east. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)
  22. That same rubber tape can be purchased at Home Depot & Lowes (much cheaper) Tom B. (LongLine)
  23. There are ways: 1. Regardless of currents, if you making a turn, the inboard ball goes slower than the boat while the outside goes faster than the boat. (arc length difference) 2. If you raise or lower the ball, it has a vertical velocity while the boat doesn't. 3. If you snag a ball, it becomes stationary while the boat is still moving. 4. If you snap a cable, the ball drops to the bottom probably faster than your boat can go at full speed. Tom B. (LongLine)
  24. Done. Anyone want a job as a dead bird collector? Tom B. (LongLine)
