how long for mono leader on leadcore?
J.D. replied to BP Swing's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I use Seguar Invis-X flouro. 20lb. on lead core and rigger rods, 12lb. in the spring off the boards. I use the flouro. line, not leader material..... comes in 200 yd. spools. Jim S. -
bobs_boy, Here's the link for deep water temp. off Rochester. "THE WATER TEMPERATURE OFF ROCHESTER IS...".... the temp. probe is approx. one mile off shore in 35-40 feet of water. The temp. at the probe was 54 degrees this morning, the weather buoy off shore was recording 3.6 ft. waves so me and my little 17 footer went back to bed........ http://weather.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/fmtbltn.pl?file=forecasts/marine/near_shore/lo/loz043.txt

how long for mono leader on leadcore?
J.D. replied to BP Swing's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Lead core is very speed sensitive... a change in boat speed, wave action or direction will cause the lead core to rise and fall in the water column. The shorter the mono leader, the more rise and fall the lure has.... longer leaders will mean less vertical lure movement. I like the shorter ( 20-30ft ) leaders so my baits move up and down a bit. If I want to hold at an exact depth, I will run a long lead off a downrigger. Just my $.02 Jim S. -
Deep water temp. off Rochester at 6 AM was 54 degrees.......... at 11 AM it was 72 degrees........

I bought 2 Scotty riggers from Cabela's 2 years also and they came with the Quick Draw rod holders. While making a fairly tight turn to port with both riggers down, the starboard rod holder opened up and came flying back into the boat and the rod almost took my buddy's head off. I super glued them shut but still didn't trust them. I installed a track system this spring so they are sitting in the basement collecting dust......free to good home if any one wants them Jim S.

Great service from these guys.....bought my new Furuno 620 from them this spring for $668 (plus transducer) no sales tax. They will even buy your old electronics outright or give you store credit for new stuff. I'm sure I'll buy from them again. Jim S.

My guess would be a hole or rip in the bellows or some other component under the waterline allowing water to fill the bilge. The boat became "stern heavy" allowing 2 ft. waves to come over the transom. Once the stern gets full, a roll over is almost inevitable. I fish alone out of a 17 footer and have put a LOT of thought into being safe. Self inflatable PFD's are a must on my boat. Hand held water proof VHF radio for backup, 2 big bilge pumps and 2 big batteries to run them. I can't even put into words the feeling I get when something like this happens to someone in our "family" http://www.docksidereports.com/small_boat_safety_at_sea.htm Jim S.

Troll North/South across the current. Vary your top speed mid 2's to mid 3's take note of trolling direction and speed when a rod fires. You may need to change speed when you change direction. Good Luck! Jim S.

what to look for when buying used boats

Here is more information on boat buying Jim S. http://www.docksidereports.com/index_boat_buying101.htm -
Tom, check the clock on the gps is set to the correct time. The internal software matches the time of day with where the satalites "should be".... if the two are out of sinc you could get a bad fix....... my 2 cents Jim

Woody, My planner boards are home made. ...$10 material cost per board. My first mast was a length of old closet rod with an eyebolt at the top and 2 old coat hanger hooks .... I wrapped the line around the hooks by hand  . It doesen't have to cost a lot or be fancy, it just has to work. A bag of JOLLY realeases is about $12. The guy who makes the releases has an Ontario, N.Y. address. try this number: 524-2626. ( 713 Boston Rd. ) This can be an expensive sport only if you let it. I've been working out of the same boat for 11 years now and keep adding / upgrading toys and equipment a little each year. Sometimes we have to "eat the elephant" one bite at a time. It looks like we have a bit in common, I used to have a home in Walworth, and I'm a mold maker. I can PM you some pics and dimensions of my boards if you like. Let me Know. Jim S.

The information posted below was written by Capt. Steve Drave of KING ME Sportfishing a few years back and was lost from this sites archives when the site was hacked a few months ago. I am re-posting Steve's article for the Newbies who would like some insight into Lake Ontario brown trout fishing Jim S. Lake Ontario Brown Trout Fishing: Well the time is growing shorter till spring arrives. Soon we all will have our boats shoveled out and in the water. Time for spring Browns. You send out your planer boards and start to set lines. 3 rods set off the starboard planer and you start to send out the second rod off the port board. “Fish On!â€Â
