I haven't done it for years but If I was marking fish on the South end say 30 or 40 ft down. I would lip hook a sawbelly and cast it out 30 to 40 ft from the boat. Then hook up a bobber up to that line and cast the bobber out to get it away from the boat. If the lake is flat, many brown trout were caught with this method.

Put me in coach. Im ready to play... Well almost. All I have to do is got to do is ....Respool the reels, check the swivels, make sure new fishfinder works, sharpen hooks. retie wire setups.hope new GPS chip is accurate.get new safety flares, figure out why trailer brakes quit working, replace a couple trailer lamps.change oil in both motors ,install new water pump in main motor, big motor gets a new timing belt also, install washdown pump,Get trailer registered,Make sure both motors start before going to the lake.Batteries could use a good charge, install new furuno transducer, and check the air in the tires a we will be all set. Im sure the way the weather has been other guys are in the same shape Im in. There are probably a few items I forgot to mention. I usually fish the Barney Bear derby the weekend before but I have a wedding to go to. I should probably add' keep wife happy' to list. -

When they are on top rolling around with their mouth open X2 on releasing pressure so they go back down. Sometimes slowing the boat down works. I run 30lb test on everything.Real short leads so I can gain as much line on them before they get to the surface. On my boat if a fish hits and doesn't take drag we do not want it. And yes a big laker takes drag. Lakers do jump. 9K in Fingerlake derby winnings last year with lake trout......... So sharpen your hooks we plan on the same this year

I will add something else to think about. I believe that what you are pulling behind the dipsey has a lot to do with how much the dipsey dives and how far it tracks out to the side. Speed has something to do with it also I believe pulling a paddle behind a dipsey it will not dive or track out as far as pulling a spoon.
