  1. I ordered the Shimano drag washer grease directly from Shimano parts dept. 1 oz will last you along time. The job isn't that difficult but there is a little metal spring loaded pin on the reel handle shaft that you need to pay attention to. As you are unscrewing the star drag adjuster off the shaft watch for that little pin to fall out. It is the clicker mechanism on the star drag adjuster. Glen
  2. Sounds all well and good but sorry, we are for the most part just a bunch of fishermen here. We do not have experience or education in survey research but what we do have is an awful lot of combined hours fishing Lake Ontario. And I can tell you the majority of those that gave their opinions are people that care about the well being of the fishery as well as pay to support it. We are not scientists or polititions and discuss these matters on a message board that is being run for just that purpose. SO WHATS THE PROBLEM? You wrote: As for the ‘poll’ I would NOT put any credence in any passive polls put up on a site like this. Totally skewed result. I will leave it at that. How could you not put any credence in a poll that is being conducted and discussed here by some of the worlds leading experts on the subject? The guys that fish Lake Ontario. Glen
  3. Just a friendly reminder. After pulling my Shimano Tekotas apart and cleaning and greasing the drag washers I figured I would put out a little reminder about doing it as a couple of my wire reels were in desperate need. These drag systems take alot of abuse from those big ole mean sprited Kings and need to be maintained. For the 20 minutes it takes it is well worth it to be in good shape to fish all these new derbys that are hittng the lake this season. A clean and lubricated drag system is a happy drag system. Glen
  4. You can fish out of any port on the lake in a 16 footer. You just got to pick your days and stay relativley close to port with the 10 hp. Things can change in a hurry out there. Spring Browns close to shore is a good bet. Mexico, Oswego, Fairhaven and Sodus are all good for spring Browns. There are many more I'm sure but those are the ones I'm most familiar with. If you want to go west for salmon and lakers the Niagara Bar is a good choice in the spring. I fished that area out of a 17 1/2 footer many times with no problems. I ran a 90 hp on it though but once the fish move up onto the Bar you don't have to go far to get on them. Just use common sense and pick your days. No fish is worth risking your saftey over. Glen
  5. Sooooo, that would mean there are at least two pinheads in the State of NY. Big Deal. It will go thru legislation if there is enough people asking for it. DEC has claimed a neutral position on this previously and I'm sure your post will get the troops inspired. Glen
  6. Got to hand it to you Tex. I thought I had it tough at 530 mi. round trip LOL I commute every weekend so thats 2120 mi a month from April through Oct. so I guess I do got it pretty bad. Sure would be nice just to stay up there for 6 months. Did you put your autograph on the petiton? Every name will help. Welcome to the board. Glen
  7. Yup your right. Everybody else is wrong and LL fishing in Winni and LO fishing are a very good comparison. That statement alone displays the amount of common sense thats really at work here. Glen
  8. It's a good way to pass the winter months and maybe give some new fishermen some accurate information along the way. For example: Taken from Rays post, But I have to Agree a little with you on this one ,,That a uninformed or beginner fisherman might not have the smarts to adjust his target zone or spot and stay on the little ones ... Thats why I said Pros like you need to reach out to the newer guys and inform them of proper fishing tec. for each spiecies, I.E.-when to pull your spread if getting small fish, Proper fish handling to release fish ,,How To burp those deep water fish with a full air bladder before releasing,,,,and all the other proper fish reviving way you know to help with fish mortality rates.............Instead of harping on those of us that do that all the time as 2nd nature ....SO INSTEAD OF JUMPING UP AND DOWN SAYING I TOLD YOU SO I TOLD YOU SO!!! Show us you can help the fishery with a new topic of how TO Release a undersize fish,,,,or when its time to go in the cooler and call it a day.....Many new guys (and fish) will benifit from your ability to do research how to help the fish ,not attack the guys who want to fish more for their money... Thanks .. Glen
  9. Has Been your comparing apples to oranges here. Man are you desperate. Did you read the line that says they stock 24000 fish a year and the pressure is on the increase? Check the stocking numbers on LO for 2009 and the fact the fishing pressure IS on the decline. I'm thinking there could be some mismagement issues going on there on Winni. that could contribute to these statistics and it appears they are taking action to rectify these issues. Now if you would like a little better comparison to LO, at least as close as you can get considering the difference of the species, check out the LL fishing from the Finger Lakes. You will find they are quite different from Winni. But hey, What do I know. Thinking first and typeing second is a good plan. Glen
  10. Seems that quite a few of us wouldn't mind another fee to support the fishery. I thought I just paid 70 bucks for a license that was 40 last season. Lets take it easy there guys. They GOT their increase My paycheck don't go up like that. Lets let them spend that money before they go into my pocket for any more. Glen
  11. Happy Birthday Tom. Hope you have a great day. As Larry and Ray mentioned your time and work are very much appreciated. Thanks Glen
  12. So as it turns out this claim of another fee, related to the 3 rod rule is lets say bullsh-t. Thanks for the information Tom. Nice to read non-fiction once in a while. Glen
  13. Thanks for posting the answere Split. Glen
  14. Didn't want it to appear like nobody wanted to answere your question but I keep both on the boat so wasn't 100% sure what that specific law was. Rather say nothing than put up inaccurate information. Glen
  15. Hookedup wrote: I am willing to bet most of the guys on this forum are sportsman who will protect the resource for the future no matter how many rods they run. Sean YUP!!! Glen
  16. Another additional fee would suck but lets face it everything is going up. An increase to benefit the fishery that we all care about and enjoy is better than most that we are subjected to in todays world. Take taxes for instance. I fish the lake on an average of 60 days a year. At ten bucks that comes out to about 17 cents per trip. I would rather give my money up to maintain and improve the fishery than to the government to support their insane spending or to the oil companys to overfill their pockets with profits. I still would like more information on this increase as I was under the impression the license increase was put through in place of this. Anybody steer me in the right direction to get more information? Tom or Larry? Thanks Glen
  17. Larry from what I was told when I purchased my license, the license increase this season, from $40.00 to $70.00 for non resident is supposed to offset this additional fee. Just have to wait and see. Never know when it comes to money. Glen
  18. Has Been. I called you a hypocrite way back here on page 2. Just did it tactfully. This was right after your rant about all the dead fish the three rod rule would cause. Remember that rant? Thats the one were after going on and on about the dead fish I copied and pasted your statement about going 36 for 54 with 3 guys and 4 rods. Just thought I would refresh your memory as it seems to be pretty selective in your old age. Glen
  19. Well there goes about 3 minutes of my life I'll never get back.
  20. Thanks for locating those FACTS for us Longline. I took a look last night and couldn't locate them in the time I had. If these FACTS pointed in the other direction I'm quite sure they would be good enough for those that want to argue them now. Without a doubt that is what I see going on on the lake or to word it more accurately my opinion. I hope we can do something to reverse this trend. Good point Ray. I know I'll be on the phone when Tom posts that list for us. Main reason the State gives a dam about our fishery is because it generates dollars. Take those dollars out of the equation and were would we be? They couldn't support it even if a few in government wanted to. Sad but true. Has Been how can you post your crystal ball comment and then tell others not to tell you what MIGHT happen because it's based on opinion. Kinda hypocritical AGAIN. Really wish I had more time on this one but gotta work. Glen
  21. I would have to disagree with the consistant fishing part. The economy has been in the crapper for what not even 2 years. Everything I've read and seen and heard from a couple Capts I know that have time on the lake indicates the decline in Lake fishing has been going on longer that. I'll do a little digging and see if I can locate some more solid facts on this. Never said 1 more rod will enable people to afford a trip. If you read the post I said if they catch a few fish they are much more likley to return. You miss quote me. For me my most productive spread is 6 rods. Almost never have more than 3 people on the boat. No cheaters. Generally speaking that is. Like everything else you put in the water the cheaters have their days. Don't believe there was anything in the petition about reducing lures or hook points so if it goes through you can still fish the way you want. Very much like you I haven't heard any good reasons NOT to change it. I can't speak for anybody else but I can speak for myself when it comes to the expense I go through to fish this Big Lake and there is no way I would do it to be limited to a 1 rod per like you mentioned on a lake thats close to 200 miles long. A lot of other places to go and catch fish. Not sure the guys that pound out a living out there would be to happy either. Glen
