    We were at Stony this AM left the dock at 5 AM it was a tough bite today. I think the super cold day on Tuesday drove them deep. We landed 3 lakers early. But there were far fewer marks than last week. Tons of bait pods with very few marks around them If I had it to do over. I would have gone down to Mexico and gone out deep. We stayed on the water till 3 and threw everything at them. They just weren't there stay with it. The learning curve is steep but you'll catch on. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    I noticed that the fleas I was picking up last week were bigger than usual so I would guess that they were the spiny b----'s They stuck like glue and it took several slaps on the water to dislodge them.     This thread got my interest going. I reached the DEC and got some info on these critters. There are two species in Lake O. The spiny waterflea and the fishhhook waterflea. The spiny is the bigger of the two , reaching over 1/2 inch in length The black spot is their single eye. They can reproduce asexually. Which is a good thing considering how ugly they are. A few in any body of water can become a huge population very quickly and they are here to stay Also , the spiny migrate to deeper , colder water during the day and return to the surface at night to feed.     The fleas were present up by Stony Point last week .They seem to be bigger this year ,which may account for the ability to hang on to 30 lb test line . I found a picture of the little B----'s Not very pretty are they ?

    I hold the netting material against the shaft of the net with my finger . It keeps the net from spooking the fish and the net from fouling the hooks . I have used this system for years and it works for me . A gaff is great if you plan on keeping the fish , Not so much for catch and release . I have a nice gaff I use for ice fishing . Would like to see the law amended for use while salmon fishing on Lake O .

    First trip for 2017 This is by far the latest I have ever started on Lake O . Finally got out yesterday . Went out of Stoney at 5:30 with a newbie , retired army . Went straight out to 140 fow and set up . My go to cut bait rigs on riggers , FF on dipseys and a spoon down the chute on a 10 color core . First release on cut bait and landed a 10 lb oil can (LT) . Half hour later a 10 lb king was in the boat on meat . Broke one off at the release and had a rip on dipsey . Lots of charters working the finger . The whole Saiff fleet was out there and I believe Moby Dick and Gene Bolton . Didn't see a lot of nets moving on the charters . Stayed in 140 to 160 fow and marked a bunch of bait pods with marks all around them . Found 42 degree water at 90 feet . Riggers set at 75 and 90 Looks like it's going to be a good year .

    The shipping lanes are sometimes very hot. Nice catch. You're right. IF the wind cooperates. That's a long run and a seaworthy boat is a must. Have surfed back from there on some nasty waves Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    When were the fish caught ? Been fishing east end since the late 70's and it's been my experience that the major salmon staging around Henderson doesn't occur till mid August Lake trout ( yuck) are always available if you care to target them Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

    You have to fish where the fish are. This time of year it's the west end. They start migrating eastward in late July. Except for the wall in the shipping lanes ( long run) the Henderson area won't see numbers of salmon till mid August Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    I have used the 7 foot 2 piece bwd ugly sticks for several years. Tried one 7 footer about 10 years ago. Now I own 6. Love the shorter rod. And they handle big kings just fine Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    I have posted my recipe on this forum before , but here goes . I grill my lake trout on a cedar plank . When the fish turns flakey I remove from the grill and throw the laker away and eat the plank

    Welcome to NOAA. I always add a foot or two to their wave predictions spent a lot of mornings eating breakfast instead of fishing when they predict 1 to 3. And I agree with the post that fishing sucks when it's rough. Hard to maintain a course and the lures are acting all crazy at the ball. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    The only product that I have found that works against these things is Buggspray. You can find it on eBay and amazon. Be sure to order the biting fly formula. I have used it for several years Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    I spent much time going back and forth with the DEC in Albany. I have an email from them stating that ANY baitfish preserved by brining can be used in NY waters.     Here's another thought. There is a key on the impeller. It may be sheared. Pumps water at idle. But impeller slips at higher rpm Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    The flapper valve is in the exhaust tube to keep water from entering the engine in following seas if you have good exhaust flow. The valve is not the issue. Is there any contamination in your exhaust water ? Catch some and look at it Also is your cooling system open or closed ? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    The way the wind is blowing in Watertown , I doubt anyone is fishing Mexico Bay today .
