  1. Caught a decent number (and good looking ones) on Keuka. Just gotta know where to find them. Keuka does have its issues thought. Seneca and Cayuga are better just from the sounds of reports.
  2. Great things to keep in mind guys. Thanks again for the help....looks like a reel is in the works. Guess I'll have to break down and get a few new toys
  3. Another question...Not sure if I have to upgrade my reels or not, but I have a Daiwa Accudepth 27LC that I bought a while ago and two Daiwa Sealine 27H's that were given to me. Does anyone know if 100 foot of lead core with backing will fit on the reels mentioned?
  4. Thanks for the help Pete! I do have a couple more questions though. Can I use inline planer boards with lead core or do I strictly run lead core out the back of the boat? And what type of line should I use for backing if my reel will fit more line? Again, Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I'm excited about the additional options that lead core will offer me!
  5. I have some lead core line questions. I have a pole and reel setup that is perfect for it and have never set it up with lead core before. It's just been set up with mono and sitting in the corner of my garage. Bear with me as I have a bunch of questions... 1.) Is there any certain brand of lead core line that anyone would recommend over others? 2.) Should I look for a certain lb. test over another? My pole says it can take 8-17 lb. test and reel 12-20. 3.) Should I get a specific number of colors? 4) Given a consistant trolling speed what's the approximate sink rate of lead core? 5.) Should I add some sort of "backing" on the reel before I put the lead core on? 6.) What knot do I use to connect lead core and leader? Any help is appreciated!
  6. Not sure about the wind for that lake but I thought the max for Hemlock and Canadice lake was a 16 footer? My boat is 16.5 feet and a 15 hp motor. I wanna fish it, but don't want a ticket.
  7. idn713...you didn't really say where you were fishing in your initial post. Where are you fishing besides Canandaigua? I would try the Bluff at Keuka if I was looking to jig up some lakers. It's a consistent spot (being 100-115 feet) and doesn't really have drastic drop offs when compared to other spots in the FLX. Also, you should try using a drift sock or a couple 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottom. A sock or some 5 gallon buckets should slow you down if there is a breeze and increase your presentation over the fish that you are marking. Jigging is a great tactic and you can be very successful with it when you find some active fish! Good luck out there!
  8. Anyone been out shed hunting? If so, post any pics.
  9. I have an off white outboard and am looking to clean a little soot or oil type stains off of it. Should I use a dish washing detergent to clean this up or does someone have a different suggestion? Any help is appreciated!
  10. Usually white is all I use but guys also use the smoke colored flukes. Fish can be at many different depths. They'll generally bite better when they're suspended off the bottom and shooting around on the fish finder. You'll see your jig and fish on the fish finder if your unit is precise enough. It's really a great time getting on some active fish! Good luck!
  11. Decided to take a short trip out on the lake tonight. Got out there w/ my line in the water around 7:30. Jigged South of the Bristol Harbor area. Had a few delightful encounters with boats and wakeboarders about 50 yards from my boat. Couldn't believe these people were between me and shore when I was in about 100 feet. Might have to bring an air horn out there next time. It's crazy how inconsiderate people can be, but back to the fishing. I had a chaser or two close to the boat and couldn't seal the deal. Missed a couple strikes when the jig was on the way down. Had some decent marks on the fish finder. All the sudden I was reeling up and had a good strike. Finally netted the Laker about 10 minutes later after some good runs. Weighed it and measured it. It was at least 11lbs and 30" or so according to the boga grip and measuring tape. First one over 10 lbs! I was so ecstatic and wanted to get it back in the water so I can catch it when it's maybe 5 lbs bigger. Had a big head compared to what I've gotten used to catchin on Keuka. Great night on the water besides the pleasure boats/boarders. Anyways, hit a good milestone tonight! Tight lines everyone!
  12. Hey guys! I'll be camping this coming weekend with my college buddies at the Park. I mainly fish Canandaigua and Keuka with jigs and flatlining with the occasional mini downrigger. Does anyone have any tips for me with the coming weekend? I'd love to jig if everything works out, but am flexible with my techniques. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Troutman
  13. I was working along the West shore today up in the hills. I should have taken a picture b/c the lake looked a very cool aqua blue and that mud line at the South end looked phenominal. Too bad you couldn't stick to the East side. Good job gettin out...winds have been nasty lately.
  14. Sorry forgot to mention where I caught it. I was fishing Canandaigua.
  15. Took the maiden voyage on Canandaigua March 15 as I had the day off. Trolled shallow with sticks and spoons looking mainly for bows or browns. Was looking to pick up around 12:30 when a rod went off. I finally brought the beautiful brown to the net after a sluggish fight. Ended up being 24.5" and 9.5 lbs. Great fish! Enjoy the pic below! P.S. My wife was recently saying if I catch a decent fish I should get it mounted for the wall. I have a couple deer heads, but not many fish despite fishing longer than I've hunted for. So this one is going on the wall...
  16. Looking for a Rod/Reel combo or one or the other. I'm going to get a Seth Green set up together. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for your time.
  17. So I'm all excited to get out and do a trial trip to make sure everything is working when I start having motor trouble at the launch. Here is the scenerio. Any help is greatly appreciated. My motor starts right up on choke. I leave it running and after about 5 minutes then it stalls out. I start it up again and it does the same thing. I decide to tinker around with it by starting it in choke, quickly taking it out of choke and then putting it in forward. I take off and it stalls out while in motion. I do the same thing again with the same result of stalling out while in motion. Then I try to keep pumping the gas while I'm in motion and the motor responds by running fine. As soon as I stop pumping the gas the motor quits again. I happened to notice a small amount of gas going in the water next to the motor as I'm pumping. The gas was coming out of the upper housing area. I took the top cover and the sides off of the motor without any success of finding where the leak was coming from. Has anyone had a similar experience? My motor is a 1998 Suzuki 15 Hp 4 stroke. I havn't had any problems with it until now. I bought it used about 5 years ago and the nearest place to get a Suzuki serviced is an hour away. The engine oil and filter are new, the gear oil is new and the fuel filter is new. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  18. It def. would make sense for any left over fish to be given for a good cause somehow. When I worked for DEC I know that about half of the fish, or more, would be in bad shape to eat. We would be pulling nets in with many fish that were already dead. Any live ones we could quickly get them out of the net, take a measure and let them go. About 75% or more would be spoiled in a short time (especially pike). I worked with more warmwater fish than coldwater fish out of Lake Ontario and some adirondack lakes.
  19. I'm excited to see that the lake is doing well. I will take all the info that I can get. While in College I worked for the DEC Fisheries in Region 6 (Watertown, Lake Ontario and Western Adks areas). I saw so many cool things while working with Fisheries over two summers. We worked quite a few weekends to specifically gain data that's being discussed in posts above. We would do "Creel Census" at specific boat launches, bodies of water and other strategic locations during weekends. There is a lot of behind the scenes work that is done by DEC employees. I don't think people give them the credit they deserve sometimes. We're lucky with all these different bodies of Water here in the Finger Lakes. There's been some 20lb. + Lakers taken in Canandaigua over the last few years. Who knows, you might be the next one to catch one that big!
  20. I really don't feel like there is a bait problem on this lake. I've had multiple fish this year with bait in their stomachs. One was an 8 lb. brown with 14, yes 14, sawbellies in it. I've also been finding some smelt as well.
  21. I have a 34 lb. thrust Minn Kota Endura Trolling motor for sale. I'm asking $80 for it as it was used for one season. Item still in great shape. Will look at offers.
  22. Has anyone been out on the ice on these lakes or heard of guys being out yet? I'm itchin to get out there after some perch. Interested to see how much ice there is.
  23. Did some ice fishing on Dec. 27th. The ice was about 5-7 inches. Caught a 20-22" walleye, a 18-20" whitefish and a bucket and a half of Perch with a buddy. Good to be out again. Was a bit windy but settled down after a while. Fished from 7:30/8 until 1. Fish taken on jigging spoons and bibbits. Minnows and eyes worked good. Quite a bit of ice melted the day after we were out, but should come back quick with the cold temps were gonna get. Can't wait to get out again. Good to be home, but I gotta find some new spots now that I've moved to the Canandaigua area. Tightlines!
