  1. Don't confuse whole bait ( typically alewives) with cutbait (typically fillets of sliced of herring). You usually have to fish whole bait with a bait head that has a single hook in front of the treble to pull the whole bait into a slight curve to get the right rolling action. Cut bait is usually fished with a bait head that has only a treble and the bait head itself is designed to give the rig the right roll. You mix and match these setups but it's a good idea to have the differences in mind before you start getting creative.
  2. Hope like heck to get out Sunday afternoon!
  3. It seems like we are tired of the language we used to speak. A woman I work with the other day said she "really likes to office at home". 'Office at home',- what does this mean?
  4. Not trying to start WW III but I would have to say that overall I've dealt with bone headed moves made by weekend warriors way, way more often than charters. The simple fact is that most charter captains have far more skill and experience in both finding fish and boat control than the average joe.
  5. These are just rough generalizations but, there are different sonic signatures between braid and wire. Feeding fish will typically respond to wire presentations aggressively. Braid can be more effective with spoons and long leads (Slide diver) when the bite is tough.
  6. JUST PICKED UP A TIDBIT. Thanks!
  7. Reach out to Hank at L&M on here, integrity and a lifetime of smarts.
  8. Shorter = snappy, aggressive action. Longer = lazy, slow action. Typically meat is supposed to appeal like an easy meal soooo...
  9. Make sure you have a means to measure down speed and temp. It's critical to run your presentations at the right temp and speed. Additionally you need to know where your divers are running on the setting you have them on. Something to think about also is that the wire diver has very different sound signature that can be appealing to feeding fish. Also you may want to take into account that there are days when riggers outfish divers and vice versa. As long as conditions permit I usually run 2 riggers (1 w/spoon + 1 w/flasher fly), 2 wire divers (usually both w/ FF) or 1 wire diver (FF) + braid slide diver (spoon) , and a junk line(core(spoon) and copper(FF)) off each side on the big boards or big inlines. Then I let the fish speak for themselves. Follow an S pattern across depths this will let you know where the bait/fish are and what speed they want it(outside lines in turn run faster/inside lines in turn run slower). Tight lines- remember it's the journey that counts!
  10. Many of the manufacturers only make their slashers to rotate in one direction. John King sells them in pairs to rotate opposite directions(port/starboard). In my experiments so far it seems like the slasher flashers have done better than big paddles pulling meat during the mid day doldrums so I thought I'd look into the directional thing and see if I was missing something which it doesn't seem like I was.
  11. Running large slasher type flashers I've been messing around a little with running the large slasher flashers with meat rigs on divers and copper off the boards. Got a couple simple questions: If they have starboard printed on them I'm assuming that means starboard as you are facing the bow. Also what happens if you run a starboard slasher on the port side- do they actually work towards the boat potentially causing tangles? Last but not least if the tail points to starboard doesn't that mean it should be deployed on the port side? Thanks
  12. Wow. Bummer man. I'll keep my eyes peeled too!
  13. Oak 7/23 Fished 140-200. Temp was down around 100. Action seemed slower than reports from last week. Spoons took our fish. Did not mark a lot of bait or fish.
  14. Well we are going to be there Sat/Sun so hopefully the effect will not be felt on Sat and the wind is not supposed to blow real hard (waves 1<) so maybe the effect will be minimal.
  15. East wind at the end of the week for the Oak What do you guys figure the effect of the ENE 11kt wind for Saturday will be on the fishing at Oak Orchard?
  16. Nothing a little welding won't cure...
  17. WTG! Planning on being there at the end of this week.
  18. Oswego 7-16 Launched at Oswego because we could not get out at Port Bay due to the flooding. Didn't have any real idea where to go since I've never launched at Oswego before. Fish seemed scattered with a spoon bite for us. Zeroed in on an area in front of the stacks with a strong current & some bait in 200, temp down 100 to 120. Just kept passing through it and we'd get 1 every third or 4th pass through the waypoints.
  19. Looks fairly extensive, but I didn't look at surface temp back a few days ago http://www.coastwatch.msu.edu/ontario/o2.html
  20. I'm not getting anything from that link
  21. How far east is the lake affected by the upwelling?
  22. Are the two riggers you have left fixed boom or adjustable?
  23. See my 165 Alumacraft listed in classified $5700 for a complete setup with autopilot, full winter fishable canvas, merc fuel injected main 4 stroke, and merc 4 stroke kicker. The canvas, auto pilot, and kicker added up to 5 grand. https://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/topic/62987-165-alumacraft-complete-trollingjigging-setup/
