  1. Congrats on all the great fishing. It is very good news that the halibut is coming back. About 15 years ago the state of Maine tried to reintroduce them.It looks like they succeeded.
  2. I have a few Penn Black Sabre wire rods with carboloid guides and tip. It does a very nice job for me. I don't have to deal with the extra weight and lack of balance that seems to a part of the roller rods. Maybe if Glen lets me touch his Dipsy Diver rods I will change my mind.
  3. Bernoulli's principle can also be derived directly from Newton's 2nd law. "If a volume of air or fluid is flowing horizontally from a region of high pressure to a region of low pressure, then there is more pressure behind than in front. This gives a net force on the volume, accelerating it along the streamline". This is probably the principle that allows these Japanese mills to be more efficient By creating a greater low pressure area behind the wings than there normally would be, we increase the flow of air going to the wings, thereby increasing their speed. Today's wind mills mostly operate by using a maximum speed which is limited and often less than the wind potential available. It seems that this other system can run at a much higher RPM and therefor be more productive.
  4. In that case there is a very serious discrepancy between Bernouilli's principles (which keep airplanes in the air) and the Betz law.............
  5. You just pointed out the big difference. In Cape Cod it is legal to gaff fish.
  6. If you like that sort of attractors, you should look into umbrella rigs which are very popular in Cape Cod and used for stripers and blue fish. The umbrella rigs look like a small school of fish with a wounded one lagging behind. There is a tuna rig that has the attractors in a horizontal V shape again with one seemingly wounded fish behind the center attractor. In salt water these lures work great and as far as I can see they should do well in fresh water.
  7. Most people in Brighton know your company for all the slurry sealing you do on our local roads and on the express ways. I was just trying to be funny. I am glad that some NY companies are making some money of the gas bonanza before drilling has even started around our own state.
  8. Do you mean to say that you slurry sealed them and then called it "repair"?
  9. Could it be that this new development had something to do with scrapping many current wind energy projects? http://www.triplepundit.com/2011/09/wind-lens/ Not only does this system have the potential of producing up to three times as much energy as the conventional wind mills, it also can be build on floating bases. This would make it possible to have windmills on Lake Ontario at 15 or 20 miles off shore. Maybe this new development is on the horizon (maybe behind the horizon) for Lake Ontario. If it is,it may be a source for jobs and energy without the nasty side effects. Heck, you would have to go to the 500 foot line to be able to see them.
  10. What Glen says usually works. I have had some problems with the connections and the check valves on the fuel lines. The problem was that air would come into the system from one engine connection and it would cause the other engine to run very rough or stall. that is why I prefer a system with shut off valves so that there does not have to be a constant open connection between the 2 engines. Another possibility is a 2 or 3 way valve with a shut off valve that only allows one connection at a time to be open. Cornelis.
  11. Ha, I was looking down on you while tasting many different kinds of wine in several wineries. It was great weather and a beautiful to be out on the lake.
  12. That setup is fine, remember you are not trying to break any speed records so there is little need for precision. You will definitely not have any cavitation problems with that kicker.
  13. I have tried three different types over the past 2 years. Double cedar wooden boards These don't fold but if left unpainted they absorb water fast and they lay deep in the water thereby increasing the effectiveness. If you use wooden ones do not paint them because that will seal the wood and they will be higher up in the water. You can make them yourself or buy them of e-bay for $40 to $60. Riviera triple boards. Because of the way the riviera is designed you can use them on whatever side of the boat you want. The others are exclusively right or left. They are a bit too light and too high in the water for my taste. If you add a good amount of lead to the rear end and the middle of the outer board they become very hard pulling boards. Again, the trick is to get them to lay deep in the water so they have maximum contact with water which makes them pull harder. A set is $180 plus shipping Otter boats They lay very deep in the water and track very good, probably the best of the three that I tried. I have yet to see an otter board flip over in high waves. The 2 other types will do that and it is a terrible mess to deal with. In turns the otter boats perform best. a set is about $200. Overall in my experience the otter boat is the best. I tried to answer your other post, but there seems to be a hitch in the system, anyway, that setup is fine. Cornelis.
  14. Mortigan, All you have to do is fly there from Toronto. American citizens visiting Cuba never get a stamp in their passports, lol technically you have never left Canada.
  15. Ok, here is a report. This afternoon,my 5 almost completely tame suburban deer came up to me as I was pulling out the tomato and pole bean plants from the vegetable garden. I threw the greens across the fence and some of it was hanging on the fence they happily munched on the greens about 2 feet away from where I stood and one of the fawns came up and sniffed my hand. It was a nice experience in my Brighton, NY backyard.
  16. That sure sounds like Stellwagen Bank. Did you catch those stripers in federal waters or in MA waters?
  17. I received my extra reels and 2 Penn 330 GTI reels and 1 Penn 320 GTI will be transferred to leadcore. The 330s will easily hold 10 colors and the 320 will be fine with 8 colors. I was thinking about taking the 10 color lines and splicing in a few feet of 30 pound mono at 6 and 8 colors so they can be easily used at different lengths when running them of the boards.Did any of you good people ever try this and if so ,how did it work out? Thanks,Cornelis.
  18. Did you consider changing to wire line?
  19. There really is no such thing as a cold blooded beast in outboard engines. Usually there are a few problems that combine together and create the sort of trouble that you describe. It is never a bad thing to clean or change your plugs, specially when you troll a lot running a very low rpm. A slightly hotter plug may be called for in that case. A smoking engine is not usually because of a mixture that is too rich, but if you suspect your fuel mix, just mix a bottle with 1:50 and start it with that. If it does not smoke then you have too much oil. Improbable ,but possible. One thing you should check is your fuel enrichener. Maybe it is stuck in open position after you push the key in and only releases after a few minutes when the engine warms up.Another thing may be the air supply to the intakes. Some dirt in the air holes in your hood may cause this sort of trouble. How about the spark? Are all the plugs firing or is there a bad coil? How about the link and sync? The best thing is to check the trouble shooting page in your manual and do all the checks. That way you go by trial and elimination. Always do the cheap things first. The even better thing to do is to buy a manufacturers manual for your engine. The 1990s manuals are very user friendly. The Chiltons and Selocs are nice but useless and most of the E_Bay CDs are Selocs. Cornelis.
  20. The best thing to do is to go back to the one inch plywood and fiberglass it in again. You should use marine grade plywood which is very dense and you should seal it with epoxy resin and hardener. Once it is properly sealed and dry you can glass it in. The reason why your stringers rotted away is that the wood was not properly sealed before it was glassed in and when the fiberglass started cracking, the wood got wet and it expanded thereby damaging the fiberglass even more and enough for the wood to start rotting. This was a very common thing to happen in Bayliners (bilge liners)build in the early 90s,but it is the first time I heard of it in a Thompson. Was there any flotation foam in the boat? If there was,was it dry or waterlogged? When you have the floor out and the stringers replaced it would be a good time to check the flotation foam and replace it. You can either pour it in, which is best, or use the pink closed cell boards that you can buy at Lowes. Cornelis.
  21. I would like to join an amateur team next year mostly for fishing the pro-ams. Is there anybody looking for a team member? Cornelis.
  22. Mine is usually winterized after thanks giving. My Brother In Law comes over for Thanks Giving so, dependent on the weather, we either go perch and pike fishing in I-Bay or brown trout fishing in the lake. The worst part is having winterized and then pulling the boat out again because of very good weather in early to mid December. Fall trolling is a matter of finding the best temperature. That is where the bait can be found. It is much like Spring with the fish in a frenzy to get the last few good meals before the long cold and hungry winter.
  23. Thank you all for your opinions and expertise. Being mostly a weekend warrior I decided to buy an additional 2 57 daiwa accudepth reels and a Penn 320gti. The accudepths will replace 2 Penn 330Gti reels at the trolling rods and the 330s will hold the 10 color core while the 320 will hold the 8 color core. This is a great improvement over the shakespeare tidewater 30 L reels that I bought for $8 a piece when a lot of K-Marts closed down.
  24. It is a good thing that this tax payers money robbing scheme has been exposed and disposed of. On another note,by making this go away,we have not in any way advanced our very real need for alternative non polluting energy sources. This means that we still have the same problems that haunt us,while countries like Germany and China are making giant strides toward environmentally clean and renewable energy,we are staying stuck with the same old same old. Germany has already 20% clean renewable energy and it has a roaring economy. Having stopped this is one thing, now we have to think about tomorrow.
  25. I think that the Canadian government has done about a hundred times as good as the private companies. Not a single salmon has come back to spawn in the commercial fishing pens of the private companies
