Walmart batteries will give you a 2 year warranty.That is about their life expectancy.They are junk. I tried them and although I kept them inside on wood with a trickle charger over the winter,they crapped out in a little over 2 years Right next to walmart in Henrietta on 391 Clay road there is an Interstate battery dealer.You can get cosmetically blemished Interstate batteries with interstate warranty for about 30 dollars less than regular interstate batteries.This makes them the same price as Walmart batteries but a much higher quality and warranty.They are open until 5 or 5.30 five days a week.Just give them a call at 359-3150 to make sure that they have what you need because their stock has a very high turn over.

At least their concept of cost is closer to reality than the current wind mill plans on the southern shores. They clearly state that building these structures is affordable in 12 meters,roughly 36 feet,but unaffordable in 60 meters,180 feet. Around the southern side of the lake the plans are for structures in 150 of water. Or are we on the USA side just being misled and will the plans for out generators really turn out to be in 40 feet of water??

This weekend I was an observer at the Pro-Am out of Wilson.The boat I was on is called "Spoonfed". It was great to be on this rig,even only as a spectator.The captain,crew and rig worked together like a very well oiled machine.They got their limit,but four fish had to be put back because of their size.Even so they ended up 6th out of a very large amateur field.Besides,they caught the biggest steelhead of the tournament. The pro crews were very lucky that the Spoonfed crew had decided to just go amateur for this competition.I am fully convinced that if they had joined the PROs they would have been even more on their toes (if that is possible) and they would have kicked some of the bigger boat crews a few notches down. Spoonfed captain and crew,thank you very much for allowing me to share and learn from your rich experience and please do come back next year even though it sucks that the price for biggest steelhead dissappeared together with a nuclear sponsor. See you guys next year!!

This Saturday I was lucky enough to be an observer on the "Spoonfed" fishing the Pro-Am derby out of Wilson.The Spoonfed captain is a nice and very experienced fisher man,while captain and crew are a very well organized and highly disciplined team who, together with their very well set up rig, are a very hard act to beat.It reminded me of my naval recon days 40 years ago. As luck would have it they caught their 9 fish but 4 were under sized.Still coming in 6th in a very large field is no mean feat! Thank you Captain and crew for not only allowing me on board,but also for freely giving information and tips. While fishing, a south-western breeze picked up and became brisk during the morning.While this wind picked up,so did the temperature at the ball,it went up about 6 degrees.Where we were marking fish before,the screen turned empty and I saw some boats, that had earlier fished roughly in the same area ,moving farther eastward. The captains comment was,that the fish do not like these temperatures and had moved.Then it struck me.We were on the same coordinates,but not in the same water.The water column containing the fish,had been pushed by the western winds and the Niagara river current.Relative to their environment the fish had not moved,instead their environment had moved. My first thought was. If only Garmin could have it's GPS show us temperature and water movement.Maybe they can. Could it be that this is how the salmon slowly travels east during the summer months? I can just see all that food rich water coming out of the big meat grinder, we call the Niagara Falls, attracting the salmon in winter so they congregate around its outflow and in early spring as shallow lake Eerie warms up gathering the fish around the Niagara river mouth even more.Now later on this Eerie water becomes too warm and the salmon stay suspended in their comfort zone with their bait and slowly this comfort zone travels east and thus arrives in the eastern parts. Maybe this migration is for a large part a water movement,carrying both hunter and prey.Of course the lake warms up at the same time because of the outflow of other much smaller rivers and the sun. Does this make sense or am I chasing windmills?Captain Vince suggests that instincts pull the fish away from the Niagara to their spawning grounds. Please add your 2 pennies or if you have it,much more.It will help me understand more.

You can also go to the "Beverage Baron" in Penn Yan and buy a dozen mooneyes and use them as a trolled bait behind a copper line or a leadline. If you are in front of the College you will see a farm on the hills to the north-west and to the south-east you will see a fancy wooden house at the end of an open field on the hills. Go back and forth using these 2 points for reference while trolling this live bait with 280 foot of leadline out .(9+colors) at somewhere between 1.6 and 1.9 mph.Stay in water that is deeper than 70 foot.Most of your hits will come in about 80 to 90 foot. That should put you in the fish. The best way to rig a mooneye is with one single hook through the mouth/forehead which tows the bait and a second hook,a treble,either hooked nearby the tail or trailing behind the tail and held close to the fish with a rubber band just in front of the tail. I do it this way because lakers like to hit their bait from the side.then they swim away from the small school they travel in and turn the fish to eat it,the treble on the tail end will hook them instantly and they will not swallow your hooks.

Oh yes,it is done a lot.We call it "pulling copper" usually with a small Sutton spoon at the end of 400 feet of copper.It is done by hand without a rod but with an old Victrola box.Although I see more and more people pulling by hand and then reeling in with a rod. I do most of mine in the eastern arm in the middle just a touch north of the college.

I am just wondering what triggers the first stirrings of home river desire in King salmon.I am sort of hoping that summer runoff in the rivers with pollen and other green, or summer materials triggers the salmon to start looking for the initial staging areas. Is there any information on this subject? I would really like to learn more about what makes a salmon or for that matter a steel head tick. ====================

So we decided to haul my lake boat down to our cottage on Owasco Lake and leave Lake Ontario around Rochester for the local masochists and a good choice it was.I put in at the south end and puttered up to Ensenora where I started out with a black/green dream weaver at 120 feet and before I had time to set out a second rigger it fired.Brought it in and opened its gut.there were three big,and I mean big mooneyes in its belly,so out came the little sticker box and voila a mooneye was created out of a northern king lure.I called it a "That's It" and that's what it is.Between the Dream Weaver at 120 and That's It at 70 I caught about 16 lakers on Sunday and another 12 on Monday morning between 5 and 9 in the morning. The best thing was a 4 and a half pound small mouth which I caught on a mini mite jig while waiting for my wife to come back from the obligatory pontoon boat ride.. All in all a very pleasant stay on the lake.

$5000 is nothing to scoff at.It is very hard to understand that you are asked to sponsor,but you will not be allowed to give proper exposure to your name and your product. The organizers should be reminded that without sponsors there will be no tournaments Whoever is making those rules is trying to have his cake and eat it too.

I feel almost relieved that I can't go fishing this weekend. But then again,fishing this weekend will probably be fantastic

Without taking the head off first,that would be hard to say,The blowout could just have been caused by tired metal,but it may be something else too.So take that head off and check it out.It is a very simple thing to do,just use a bit of heat on the bolts. Personally I would go for the repair,but that is because I own 3 '57 Johnsons and it has become a love affair. As for needed parts,Mayer's marina has them all!

Bill Mayer of Mayer's marina at the Irondeqoit bay outlet has about 50 of those '57 and up 35 horse covers.He will happily sell you a used one with advice as to how to remove the old one without busting the bolts.By the looks of it yours is a 59.I am not sure that the 40 horse sixties engines had those but I do not think so Don't panick,These old fifties engines are tough and Bill has all the gaskets. the part is called "the outer compression release chamber" it is part#306280 the gasket underneath is part #304726. these are 1959 part numbers for 35 horse engines and may have been superseded. Ask bill if you can use a head and then check compression.You may want to buy a complete head and not just the blown part.

This morning it said in the D&C that the park and the launch will be run by the county and stay open. It seems that the state and the county had put all the pieces in place for this transfer in the past few weeks.
