I went out north at 6mph and did not mark any fish until about 350 fow.From there on until 500 there were scattered fish at 50 feet down that did not hit and lots of fish on the bottom,but I did not bring my deep sea gear. Next time I will fish either the sun rise or the sunset, but not the midday sun ====================

Although it is possible,it may not be wise to take a 15 footer out on lake Ontario. You may want to consider going for lake trout and Landlocked (Atlantic) salmon in Seneca or Cayuga lake.I do a lot of lake, brown and rainbow trout fishing in Keuka and Owasco lake and although admittedly it is not as exiting as Lake Ontario it also is not as dangerous.

I would start with the cheap things first.Take the cowling off and put the muffs on when it is dark start the engine and check to see if your plug wire grounds out and sparks elsewhere toward the engine.Buy a spark tester in a car parts store put it in the line and see if the spark is ok.replace the plug. As for the sputtering engine,that is a fuel supply problem. The easy thing to do there is buying a can of seafoam, pour it into the fuel tank and take the boat for a nice long ride (1/2 hour) that should clean out the jets and other passages. The problems you describe sound like small maintenance issues and not one big problem so the best way to go is by getting the maintenance things done and only afterward look for a possible big ticket item. You can also go to a website called: http://www.iboats.com. once you are in there go the boating forums and choose the mercury forum.You can register and ask your question.Although the website is commercial these forums are strictly non commercial and they probably are the best engine trouble forums you will be able to find I am a member of these forums and so is Longline.

The king hit and gave a dancing show.It was a bit tricky to bring the other line in and in my exitement I brought the rigger up way to fast and bumped the rigger pole hard enough to break the wire and I lost a nice 10 pound stinger pancake weight.That is the price for being alone in a boat.Anyway, it turned out to be an eighteen pound fish so I can't really complain.The other bows were in the 6 pound range. ====================

Aluminum does not have the same density that water has and so far there are no transducers that will go through aluminum and give a reading.Fiberglass on the other hand has no problems at all and the transducer can be a through hull.

I have seen them in Gander mountain and in the store on route 104 near the wind mill in Webster.

I own a 19 foot riveted aluminum Starcraft in MA that is exclusively used in salt water and knock on wood,so far no problems at all.Take care not to get to deep into the water when you launch because the salt will eat up your brakes(not next week but 3 months from now).Also make extra sure to have enough grease in your trailer wheel bearings because if salt water gets in there it will destroy the bearings.When you are done fishing,hose down your rods and reels and then wash them with a light soap and rinse them again.The salt will get into everything including your tackle boxes so just take what you need and leave the rest. Make sure at what hours you can lauch or retrieve your boat. A lot of launches are closed for 2 or 3 hours around low tide because the water is too shallow. If you fish anywhere close to lobster pots do not use down riggers or you will loose your balls. Stripers are federally protected.You can catch them inside the 3 mile zone state waters anything over 3 miles makes them an illegal catch.

I picked up a few fair lakers in 70 feet of water and then as I got close to the east side of the sewer line a few hundred yards south of where it splits up I found this hole with great structure.It drops from 80 to a 100 in no time and it was full of fish all roughly 20 feet above the bottom.The first pass through there gave me my first king,a 15 pounder,and the second pass got me the second one which was slightly smaller.They must have made a lot of noise down there because the third pass showed an empty screen. Later on my way to 120 feet I picked up a nice steelhead which will be on the table tomorrow.There was a very strong deep down current going east By a quarter to four a dirty looking cloud started delivering lightning,thunder and rain so I packed up and went back to shoot the bull with old Bill Mayer at the marina. Tomorrow I will tear the fuel pump apart and check the fuel supply system for air leaks.

The impact driver works like a charm every time.They are available for less than $10 at harbor freight.

When do they start to disappear? I don't know when they start to disappear,but it seems they they cannot grab on to the flea flicker line. My idea is that the fleas are active in the warm upper layers of water and they are blown around with the surface water.With strong southern or south eastern winds,the warm flea inhabited water is blown away from our shore and replaced with colder water from down deeper which does not have that many fleas,until it warms up and then the fleas come back. These spiny fleas reproduce by cloning themselves lots of times when the environment is ideal for them.Only towards fall when the light becomes less and the water gets colder do they reproduce sexually and die.Their eggs sink to the bottom where they wait till next year

I replaced my lines with flea flicker (20 #) and I have not seen a flea since.

This brought in the 2 lakers who were not on the bottom but traveling with a bait pod.Both were decent fish in the 12/14 pound range.I trolled up to 90 feet and there both my riggers fired at almost the same time.and both had fish on.I lost both and gained a big bird's nest which took about 10 minutes to unravel.I like to think that they were both very ,very big fish. I stayed in that area for another half hour and in that half hour the riggers fired again but this time I got lucky and one after the other I caught a very nice looking young king,then an atlantic and to put cream on the pie a big king.All of these hit on the same rigger and dream weaver. It made for a beautiful evening on the water.

trailers are very simple and any of your local auto repair shops can take care of them. The inspection can be done by any registered repair shop that has a licensed technician.

After about 10 minutes a steelhead took the higher one and we boarded a nice five pounder.He was served with white wine and asperges in a cream sauce about 2 hours ago. A short while later we decided to join a few boats that were in about 180 fow at the 34 line, we dropped the riggers and set the leadcore again but the only fish around was right on the bottom,so we moved into deeper water and then something interesting showed up on the screen. At exactly 54ft (over 190fow)there was this long row of fish,one after the other so we brought one rigger up to that exact depth and within a minute we hooked into a nice 2 year old salmon.We boarded and released it but after that we had no more hits. We went back to the dumping ground approaching from the west and for about 3 miles at around 80 feet there was fish on the screen ,but none took our offerings. All in all a beautiful day on the lake.

I use a Humminbird 575 with triple frequency and I believe it is the best invention since sliced bread.It gives you an idea of what is happening to the sides and not just one or two relatively narrow beams underneath.This gives great information specially when you run leadcore or copper wire.When you see fish to the side you turn a bit here or there and your line goes right through the fish.

You had best check out first what you can reasonably tow with your vehicle and then see what trailer comes with the brakes that you will need,either surge or electric. Lake Champlain and lake George both have a lot of fairly high hills to cross until you see the water.... If you are limited in your tow capacity then Aluminum would be your best bet. Big outboards tend to do damage to transoms when they get banged around on the roads even with transom savers.You might want to look at some I/Os,besides inboard/ outboard engines do not easily get stolen. As for hard tops,they give you the luxury of being able to lock things up and you will not have to drag everything back and forth all the time. A hard top combined with an I/O gives you the potential of heating and air conditioning. Just my 2 cents.

These homeland security guys are to be pitied.How long can you be chasing phantoms? There have not been very many terrorists on Lake Ontario and out of sheer boredom or out of a desperate effort to justify their job they start harassing fishermen. At some point or other they will be absorbed into the coastguard and then they will be a lot more useful to all of us.

Almost all 2 stroke engines that are run on a low rpm while trolling have a problem with unburnt oil building up in the exhaust housing no matter what oil you use.It just does not get blown out of the exhaust outlet because of low pressure connected to low rpm.Believe it or not but at low rpm the exhaust housing will partly fill up with water and the unburnt exhaust oil and gunk floats on top of it until it gets out by either running your engine at a high rpm for a while or by pulling your boat out of the water.Both Johnson and Mercury engines have exhaust ports at the top end of the exhaust housing but the fumes usually only come out when the engine is run at a low rpm.this is also because of the above mentioned reason Usually you find out about it when you come back home and see this black, grey or sometimes bluish or greenish (dependent on the tc-w3 oil color) gunk coming from your lower unit. A good way to get rid of it is by running at WOT for a few minutes before you load your boat onto the trailer. If you want to make sure that you do not pollute the environment,you can use a synthetic oil. These oils produce far less smoke and they are biodegradable.They also cost a lot more than regular oils Whatever you do,do not try to use less oil than recommended.It will destroy your engine. A little bit too much or even a lot too much oil will not hurt your outboard in any way.

I have 2 plastic covered bright yellow pancake 8# downriggers and a few black balls 6 and 8 pounds. I mostly use the pancakes because they have less blowback,but I am wondering about the color.Would it be better to paint them black and maybe put a reflective scale pattern sticker on ,or is this just a waste of time?
