A while ago there was this video by Captain Bill Salmon where he was testing the breaking strength of 7 stranded and in one case 19 stranded wire line. feature=youtu.beI went searching for the the torpedo wire and around Rochester I only found the Mason wire,the price of which varied between $36 and $44 per 1000 foot spool of 30 pound test.On Line and on E-Bay the Torpedo was about $40 per thousand foot instead of the $25 it said on the video. Just today I swung into S&R tackle nearby Sea Breeze on Culver and there it was. Torpedo wire for $22,89 per thousand foot. He has about 7 spools left and will not buy anymore till next year. If you need the wire ,then this is a chance to get good stuff for cheap. Cornelis.

Does anybody know of a place near Rochester where live alewives are available? They are readily available at the bait shops in the Finger lakes area,but are not to be found around here. Does anybody know why? Thanks,Cornelis

On Owasco lake you fish on the south end when you have a southern wind and on the north end when there is a northern wind. That way you will catch browns ,rainbows,eyes,pike and even some lakers at the outer edge of the weedbeds from 24 to 35 feet down. I usually have a lot of good catches with mooneyes which every species in that lake loves. As for walleye,that is for people who can't catch salmon.

We fished the Trench (shipping route) last Friday about a mile south of the Canadian border.Lots of bait specially around the bumps that come up to 50 feet where the rest is roughly a hundred. We did plenty of lakers and a few skippies. We were really scouting for big salmon for the proam but we did not find them there

I use a #4 or #6 Octopus hook in the mouth that does the pulling and tied up to that with a line between 2 and 4 inches long a treble hook that goes through the mooneye near the tail ,or it is just held there by a small rubber band. What you create is a live lure that gives of a perfect wounded fish smell and signal. Now you are no longer dependent on a minimal speed to make artificials effective. You are effective at very slow speeds. Somehow it works better off planer boards with leadcore. Cornelis

We went to our cottage expecting a very busy lake,but the opposite was true.It turned out to be very quiet with very little boat traffic and even the jet fleas were few and far between and well behaved. Saturday afternoon I tried the new Riviera planer boards and those things pull like mules. It is a learning experience and the weeds have a much greater effect on them than it has on Otter Boards.The jury is still out on which is better.I guess that they both have their place. Next week I will run an otter board on one side and a riviera board on the other. As for fishing,the lakers preferred 6 colors with a glow frog dodger and spoon at 1.9 to 2.2 mph. We took about 9 cookie cutters in 2 hours, on top of that we got 2 nice browns over 140 feet of water at 40 feet down. Sunday,neither the lakers nor the browns wanted anything to do with artificials be they lures,suttons or flies,so we changed to mooneyes and we caught a bunch more lakers both on the 6 colors and the 8 colors trolling at 1.6 to 1.8. The browns took the day off. All in all a very nice trip.

Now that is a nice striper !

The idea to get the bigger boards won out,I ordered the riviera triple boards. I'll probably put the otter boards up for sale.

I believe that those are very good indeed,only problem is that they cost more than a fish hawk X4 unit, $516 is a lot of money for boards

Did any of you guys have a chance to compare this planer board equipment? I hear that Otter Boats with 2 stabilizers underneath will sink when the tow line breaks off.Is this true?? Cornelis.

Was it just me that got gear caught in the trees,logs,branches, deck boards and birthday balloons,or did you guys get your fair share as well?

That's interesting. I was doing north/ south at 2.9 mph, going from 130 feet to 300 across a vertical temperature break about 45 feet down where it went from 55 to 48. All of my steelies were caught within a few hundred feet of that line.

I saw you out there. It was the same for me,many small steel head.The one that got away took my dipsy diver along with it.

Congrats! They are great boats. I rebuilt a 1964 17 foot Duratech Orion and she gave me many hours of pleasure.A 1957 35 horse sea horse pushed her at GPS clocked 28 MPH pulling a 2 kids on an innertube. The only thing I disliked about her was her inability to cut through waves,she slid off the side instead.

When you say:"Does not start",does the starter turn the engine over or is there no reaction at all? Just trying to eliminate a few possibilities,sometimes it is as simple as a malfunctioning lanyard switch or the connection on your ignition to the lanyard switch.

It was probably because of the east wind pushing the warm water. For the next few hours it was very quiet accompanied with ever growing waves and lots of different lures tried.I tried to run the dipsies,but it was just to wavy in my 19 footer so I changed to copper instead. The copper was run 300 foot out into the freezer where every so often a fish would show up on the screen and within half an hour I boated 2 nice kings,one about 11 pounds and the other 14. Neither of them put up a great fight. One was to damaged to return, the other was send back to fight another day. It was a bit tough to run single in these waves,but on the whole it was a very pleasant day on the water. On both the Leviathan and the Fish Hawk,the captains insisted that I witnessed the measuring of the fish caught and asked me to double check,so that seems to be a habit among at least a few of the participants. Cornelis I would like to "think" MOST of the good captains would do that and most "good" observers would be happy to do that as well. The problem lies with the drunken slob that got dragged out of the bar at 3 AM and stuck on a boat and is now passed out. I have actually had to wake a few up to record the catch. Better quality observers that think highly enough of themselves to not get fall down drunk every night is the answer to a LOT of tournament problems. If we chose our observers like we choose our teammates and the observers actually ACTED like the Tournament Officials they are the majority of tournament problems would never happen. You probably are right about the drunken slobs having to get dragged out of a bar at 3 in the morning, but then again and forgive me if this is in error, it is the captains of the teams who choose the observers in the first place and what goes around comes around. My choice to be an observer comes from a desire to learn about fishing techniques, strategy and the decision making process. I was very lucky to have Captain Glen and the Spoonfed crew accept my offer to be an observer. I do think that there are many more like me who wish to improve their skills. Maybe the observer thing should be treated as a rare chance to learn instead of a necessary inconvenience. Chances are that the level of available observers will improve.

The Penn Yan is a bit heavier and a lot better built.It is a class or 2 better than the bilge liners. Several people did complete rebuilds on Bayliners and the ones that had spent seasons in the water (not on trailers in the backyard) had a lot of transom rot and rotten stringers. Another problem was the flotation foam. Not only was it always soaked,there usually was not enough of it to keep the boat afloat if it were dry. Instead of having been poured in the bottom and being allowed to expand it seemed to have been sprayed in from a very few points,not allowing the foam to reach all the places where it should be.
