  1. If you are changing the engine you should try and get away from all that older material. The 181 inch (3 liter) 4 cylinder engines of the 90s and early 2000s have a higher compression rating and electronic ignition. They are more fuel efficient and very trust worthy. Do try and stay away from the 4 cylinder 165 and 170 engines because they are prone to trouble (of the expensive kind). Having to change the outdrive is not a bad thing. there is not a whole lot of common sense in trying to keep going with a unit that has all the accumulated wear and tear of 50 years. You have all winter to get a good thing going. I do not usually promote Harbor Freight gear, but given the price and the fact that you probably will use it only once or twice, you may want to buy a harbor freight cherry picker and engine stand to make working on your engine easier and safer.
  2. There is this guy called "Gene" in Newark who has a little store selling boat parts and used engines and outdrives which he takes out of old boats. He often advertises on Craig's list
  3. If you guys keep on going that way ,poor Hank will no longer fit in his own boots.
  4. For the past year ,my wife complained about my trailered boat stinking of gasoline and she was right. It was the sweet smell of 2stroke. I thought it was maybe a leaky connection or the fuel tank getting over pressurized and the fumes escaping. Just last week I finally decided to investigate the matter. It turned out that the float pin in the carburetor was worn out and allowed gas to pass through, effectively also flooding the engine when first time starting but not enough to flood the engine again within ,say, an hour. When I cleaned the carburetor I saw signs of leakage. I replaced the float and the pin and now there are no more fuel fumes. That was an easy solution to a stinky problem.
  5. Go with the DEC proposed cuts for now. The DEC has the most information about the state of the lake. But at the same time increase the lamprey treatment and start working seriously on mussel eradication instead of watching them increase and wringing our hands.
  6. I had side scan on my previous fish finder. It was great when fishing next to a steep upcoming bottom and real close to shore (100 feet). When using it in the middle of the lake my readings turned into snow because the reading became indefinite together with surface clutter. In short a mess. This was a humminbird unit.
  7. What really amazes me is that we talk about the engine as if it is just inside a car. This thing is in a boat and if it sets up or worse, there is no side of the road to move to. Instead, the people inside the boat are dependent on other people's good will to go out (possibly in bad weather)and get the passengers out of trouble.
  8. Why are the fletchings in the wrong direction?
  9. It is not that simple. During this time of year when the lake may be warm or freezing ,dependent on the wind, it is important to fish in front of a creek that flows strong enough to attract browns planning to spawn and creates some scum lines in the water which are marking vertical temperature differences. I get most of my fish in 40 to 50 feet at about 35 down. As the season advances the larger browns will go into streams while the smaller ones will stay in the lake. It is important to release these 2 or 3 pounders so they can become 12 pounders. Most of my catches are on scorpions
  10. Or just put the good used motor in and sell the other one for parts. It seems that there are some new parts in there that will sell for a decent price.
  11. This is my favorite time of the year. The crisp morning air and the steam rising off the water. The fishing is quiet and fairly close to shore. It is mostly browns ,but small mouth will hit the lures and so will the 6 pound lakers. For me it is all catch and release this time of year because the water is cold enough for the lakers to easily survive.Weather permitting I will fish until thanksgiving.
  12. Usually government agencies are secretive about their research results so it can be used for whatever political interest there may be and to insulate the agency from political pressure from special interest. Given the DEC's yearly budget and their willingness to show the results and admitting the weak spots in their information gathering, it is clear to me that the DEC has no political agenda and that they are truly working in the interest of the health of the lake (not necessarily in the commercial interest of groups or individuals). Thank you DEC for keeping your eyes on our environment.
  13. Spoken like a true politician..
  14. "Just get a Fish Hawk and spend your time and energy fishing instead of monkeying with some cobjob." Whether it works well or not is a mute point because of the logistics involved, but it sure helped me understand the basic principles of a speed and temperature probe. It shows that it is not a great new technology but just a different use of existing technology while using different packaging. Besides, it is because of people puttering around and trying different ways to get something done that we can use a chatroom today. Keep up the good work!!!
  15. Just wait, It 'll be your turn soon enough.
  16. It is a 9.9 2 stroke. It's been sitting on the boat for long time without me ever using it. Ever since I put a smaller propeller on the main engine I can troll at 1.9 while running 800rpm which is some years ago.
  17. Just out of curiosity, do you have the muffs on when you do these tests?
  18. Check for a loose wire
  19. you might want to look for a 19 or 22 starcraft islander or a Sylvan Offshore ( exact same boat out of the same factory but with a different name) There are outboard driven ones of the size that you want and they are aluminum and cost anywhere between 3 and 5 thousand.
  20. I can understand why you may think that yours has the wrong sequence, but in a distributor the #1 cylinder is usually at the right hand bottom, while pap's picture shows #1 at the right hand top. At the same time it really does not matter where you put the #1 in the sequence as long as you make sure that the spot on the distributor that you use is where the ignition at tdcd -8 for #1 is at.That the engine fires up is a sign that the sequence is correct, or it would have backfired if it started at all. Also, the rotation is clockwise.
  21. The picture with the plug wires has the correct sequence. Right bottom 1 left bottom 3 left top 4 right top 2. If you think that he did a 180, you should try right bottom 4, left bottom 2,left top 1 and right top 3.
  22. Yes, I'll send you a pm later today Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  23. And if it is trimmed to far down it will stick the bow way too far down into the water
  24. Ah, the smell of 2 stroke in the morning....
