Whether fish are in a stream or a lake,they will react to prey(lures and such) in much the same way. Any fly fisherman will tell you to choose your fly according to the current hatch. It is the same in the lake, but the "hatch" is harder to determine. One way to do this is dropping a sabiki rig into a bait school and choose your lures according to what you bring up. Another way is by examining the stomach contents of your first fish and pick your lure size and color accordingly.Two cold winters caused a huge die off among the alewives. The result is bigger alewives ( the smaller lures you used 3 years ago will not work). The lake is clearer,but because every stream and river is low and warm, the algae is much heavier and thicker and greener in the slick lines in the lake . Again your go to lure of yesteryear is now useless. Maybe I'm just mesmerized by things that I do not understand, but I believe that there is some rhyme to my reasoning. One thing has scientific backing and that is that the pigmentation in fish is such that the fish will adjust its skin coloring in order to adjust to the color pattern present in the environment it lives in. Ergo, lake water color changes and along with it the color of bait fish will change.

I have had very good results with live alewives (caught on yazuri rigs out of bait schools) and hooking them onto a flasher fly rig (instead of the fly) or a dedicated live bait rig. I had to drop my trolling speed a lot in order to get natural representation,but in spite of a lot of laker bites it did produce well for salmon.

Most 9.9 kickers will go that slow. The problem with an eighteen footer is the steering. You need a deep running kicker to keep your boat straight in cross winds and enough power to turn into the wind instead of being blown sideways.

So the tournament is over. The fishing stunk. But the gathering at the end of the day was fantastic and made it all worthwhile. A big thank you to all the organisers for making this event one to look forward to. Fish or no fish, I plan on participating again next year! Cornelis

You can make it work the right way if you put 30 or 40 feet of mono between the different colors. That way you will always have mono in your guides and down to the water. It's worked for me and it saves space because you don't have to bring another three or four rods for each side of the boat.

With eastern winds? For now there is a clearly defined thermocline at about 50 foot down, so you should be able to take advantage of the thermocline hitting the bottom and fish for browns in 60 degree water on the bottom in structure. You might want to consider live bait or jigging since trolling has been less than succesful.

We fished Mexico Bay just today. The fleas were almost non-existant.

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the connections on the back of the display unit. I pulled them out cleaned them off put them back in and bingo everything works again.

It used to be a matter of listening to the sound that the rigger cables make. And registering the speed and direction of the boat when a fish was caught. The theory being: If you hear the right sound and go exactly in the same direction and at the same speed as when you caught that last fish,you are doing good.

Fishing derbies are nice,but I sometimes wonder about all the prize money and the competition it causes. I like the family friendly derbies like the triple crown derby on the east end, because,win or loose,the gathering of all fishermen ,the food, and the friendly competition makes for a joyous community event and people go home ,win or loose, with a satisfied feeling ,having broken bread with friends and shared experiences. If you want to gamble and win money,there always is the casino.
