  1. We changed out setup to magnums with the larger hooks and some single hooks and in addition we also put all the clips and blacks to the lightest possible setting. This helped to the point where we were not dragging any hitch hikers. Then we also varied our speed to anywhere between 1.9 ( at one point) and 3.2 but that did not help ,they kept hitting. we lowered our lines to 105 feet down and even there they were bugging us. The one saving grace in this whole deal was that we did not drag them along any length of time and they all swam off after being released. I like to think that these fish will be very wary of any lures for a long time to come and they will probably make it back up to Altmar next year.
  2. We left the dock at 5.15 AM and went northwest to about 120 feet in front of the plant looking for salmon. Gone are the big mountains of bait that we saw last week sitting on the bottom. This week there are small and decent sized bait clouds and they are mostly in the 40 to 60 foot range (over anywhere between 120 and 170 foot). We found 47 degree water at 95 foot down. We set up a program with lines anywhere between 30 and 95 foot. First we tried a few FFs but it soon became clear that this was a spoons only bite. We ran dolphins and an assortment of green and black and silver stingers. We went 15 for 17 kings, but they were all in the 15 to 20 inch range. All the fish looked healthy. We returned all of them. By the looks of this, last years stocking and/or wild fish has survived well and that is very promising for next fall. Most of the fish we caught came from between 40 and 60 feet down. Another interesting thing is the very long and wide scum line. We saw some steelhead on the surface eating bugs. Rolmops.
  3. Is there a possibility to include catch&release ?
  4. We left the dock this morning around 5 and headed towards 40 to 60 feet toward the plant . While trolling for browns we slowly meandered to the 70 foot range with a water temp of 58 at 35 foot!!!. And then the bait mountains started appearing on the screen, very similar to the pics that longline posted off his screen view in front of the Gennie. So we had bait and temperature and we even caught a brown or two. Between the 2 of them they must have weighed about a pound, not exactly picture show off material. That was just about it for browns and so we slid out to deeper water and there we tried for salmon. We caught some very juvenile juveniles in the 12 inch range and that was it for the day. It was nice to be out on the water, but I very much have the feeling that the winters of 13/14 and 14/15 did a lot of long range damage and it will probably take a few years for the fabulous fishing to come back to us. In the meantime, please do release every dink and don't be too hungry for lakers because they take a long time to replenish themselves.(besides ,they $hit all over the boat when you catch them)
  5. We had the same mountains of bait on our fish finder today in Mexico bay.
  6. There may also be another problem which is also easily fixed. On some remote control boxes (cables) There is an adjustment screw that controls the ease of movement that the cables move back and forth with. You tighten it and it will be harder to move the handle and the cable won't slide back. But I am just guessing here. Without seeing the engine all my advice is just a guess.
  7. If it is a 2 stroke you may have a problem with your link#sinc. To be more precise, just above your carburetor there is a small wheel that moves back and forth as you speed up or slow down. Sometimes that little wheel is worn down on one side, instead of round it is flat on one side. As you accelerate the wheel moves up and syncronizes the timing advance, but then it flips back onto the flat side and the RPMs go down ( the engine will burn rich and your plugs will go black). you will keep on adjusting and the wheel will keep on flipping back to the flat side. This wheel is easily replaced for about $5 and it is a very easy fix.
  8. Check your wiring for bad grounds or loose contacts on the battery
  9. Around this time of year you should be able to get some browns around seven feet down
  10. I've got about a dozen, but I was trying for a different target at 2.8 mph. But the kings were not around.
  11. Had a late start today and made it to the water around 7. First we did a bit of brown chasing in 20' of water but we only managed to produce 2 less than mediocre brownies in one hour so it was time to go out deeper. We made our way toward seventy feet and had a gigantic hit on the one ten pound brown trout line that was still in the water. This was 20 feet down over 60 feet. We were too busy resetting everything for bigger fish and did not react the proper way. After some acrobatics this beautiful fish broke the line and simultaneously spat the lure out in midair We ended up with no fish and no lure. but it did wake us out of our lazy mood. For the rest of the day we picked at lakers with purple herring bone magnums and ended up with 3 of those, all in the ten pound range all on the dipsies which were out about 160 feet. Not a great catching day, but a fantastic fishing day.
  12. Did you ever pay attention to the fact that most people buy more spoons in winter than during the fishing season?
  13. When I bought my Islander,it was called "Salmon Slayer" whereas I see any boat as a "Dream Weaver". Those two really are at the opposite end of the scales. I removed the the salmon slayer name because I like dream weaving and sometimes maybe catching a fish. For 5 years now There has been no name printed on that boat. I call it "My Islander" and think about naming it "Dutch Treat". Maybe one of these days I will come upon the name that will end up on the bow and the stern.
  14. I learned that trick from a little dutch boy who stuck his finger in a dike
  15. Try the #1 lure Jensen red yellow or orange Dodgers and about 3 foot behind it a DW SS in lemon or orange crush off 10 lengths of leadcore at 2.7 mph near a scum line. There will be steelhead or coho.
  16. What? Did you know Earnest Hemingway too? Yea I was younger then , but he did use my story and he used my character for that little book he wrote. "the old innertuber and the sea " he wanted to name it. I still have a copy of it somewhere.
  17. O come on now fellows,we can easily out bs him,if we put just a little bit of effort into it. Let's make this an official bs thread. Ha I remember when I was 5 miles off shore in an inner tube with some shoelaces and a hook, and this monster hit my hook and started pulling me north, and at the same time these huge storm clouds started rolling in... please add to this story.
  18. With all the thievery going on in that area ,you may want to sleep on your boat.
  19. In the old days, boats were renamed all the time, but with a slight of hand. In order to keep the jinx out, the new boat owner would remove the name of the boat and speaking out loud they would say, "You have no name" and dram of whisky would be poured on the water to appease the winds and the waves. The next day, this by now nameless boat would get a new name and a dram of whisky would be poured on the boat and in the water to appease the wind and the waves. Of course,if the owner was Dutch ,Dutch Gin would be poured.
  20. I fully agree with your words. Small town politicians are on a power trip and do a lot to get re-elected. BUT they do not really run the town. The real power is with the people who got them elected (special interest group) These are the people who need to be talked to. Hence my comment involving the local chamber of commerce.
  21. We did come upon a few bait balls both on the bottom and in the 40 foot over a hundred and twenty range. The one thing that caught their attention was a #0 red Luhr-Jensen metal dodger with a Dreamweaver SS Orange Crush in the 35 foot range. The fish quite regularly shot up to check it out,but in the end they did not hit.
  22. I probably should have used the term "misunderstanding" in a more suggestive manner.
