  1. You remember when we launched at Deans in January only the bow was next to the dock! Lake is up a foot and a half since then.
  2. A busy working weekend but had a couple hours free this afternoon. Very fortunate to live a short drive from Deans Cove. First launch there since mid-January with the low Winter lake levels. The new dock is great.....fingers crossed it holds up through the busy Summer season. Set the flat lines on the boards first to give the shallow water a try. Nothing doing so slipped out a little and found hungry and fiesty Lakers willing to hit spoons on the riggers. 40-60 fow was the busiest depth. Worked out to 120, but nothing much out there. Was pulling lines when the dipsey carrying a flasher/fly fired for the only time but with the largest fish. Water surface temps ranged from 44-46, speeds of 2.2-2.4 were most popular. A great time made it easy to forget about the rain and fog.
  3. For sure. Possibly next weekend if the weather and winds cooperate!!
  4. Glad to hear you found some shallow fish. We covered a large area of water and temps never varyed from 40 degrees. Never saw any colored water, just the opposite. Could read a newspaper on the bottom in 20 fow or less.
  5. Really nice morning to be out on the water. Started on the East side working shallow with flatlines. A few boats around but no fish so decided to go to the West side. Dropped the rigger deep and set a dipsey for the troll across and Bam, Bam a double of lake trout. Back to work with the big board in shallow but once again, no takers, and this time couldn't blame the boat traffic as just one kayak in the area. Sun was getting higher and what chop was on the water earlier was fading so slid out deeper. An hour later still nothing. Decided to cross over again and out in the middle another laker nailed the dipsey fly. So stayed out over 300 fow working back to the launch and kept catching lakers on the dipsey while other rods stayed quiet. It all added up to a relaxing morning and a great dinner of grilled lemon pepper lake trout. Happy Easter everyone.
  6. Just about anyone could launch there now. Lake is a foot higher than January when Fishstix and I last went out of Deans in the 24 foot Wellcraft. There is essentially no drop off at the end of the concrete pad so time to go fishing.....
  7. Bet that was a fun little battle!!
  8. Fasten your seatbelt. South wind in the forecast means a bumpy ride. With the lake warming fish could be anywhere. I havent been out in a few weeks but back then some silvers and lakers in the shallows. All Winter you could find lake trout in 80 feet or deeper and if you found them they tended to favor flies over spoons. Good luck and tell us how you do for better or worse. Reports have been scarce lately
  9. My mast is up front as well. Did you mount it with a backer plate? As for boards, any can work. I started with these SuperSkis and graduated to the Amish Outfitter boards as they track better in rougher seas. Some use Otter boards and some guys have homemade. Whichever you choose the snubbers are a good idea to take torque off the mast if its a little rougher water.
  10. Welcome aboard Chinooky. Lake level will keep rising over the next few weeks so launch and returning will keep getting easier. Look forward to reading more reports as the number of boats out on the water tends to be many many more than posted reports here. Good luck out there and perhaps our paths will cross.
  11. Post a pic of your mast and all can see what we have to help you out. I have a pair of Super Ski boards that would work if the mast is good.
  12. Have you fished with both inline boards and a large planer/mast system? Depending on your tastes determines which to get. I tried both and really prefer the big board setup as I didn't like to deal with removing the inline in the middle of landing fish. Feel like there are other advantages when working a spread too. Downside is you cant make quick turns or else tangle City......I still have some inlines that had little use so PM me if you want to try/buy them.
  13. Can I come along too? I promise not to jinx the trip by packing bananas in the lunch box.
  14. I have not fished from a kayak or higher, but if you look back on Cayuga lake posts I think you will find many posts specific to both techniques. Also, if you had success around Deans in September and October then you were figuring things out pretty well. As the larger Lakers get closer to spawn time they tend to migrate to the South end of the lake and develop lockjaw for a while. Smaller fish are around, but as lake temps even out in late Fall, they could be anywhere in the column so finding a group on your electronics is less common. Get started this Spring and with more time on the water patterns will start to reveal for you. Good luck.
  15. You had a beautiful morning to be on the water. Did the fish provide some entertainment?
  16. Drove by Deans yesterday and from 89 it looked clear and a good warm up is coming this week. I checked the lake level and it is 9 inches lower compared to when I last launched at Deans in January. That day we were nearly to the end of the dock with my 24 foot rig, but otherwise had no problems. With a 16 footer I'm betting you will be fine. South side of the dock is flat past the concrete ramp so you can drive into the water some if needed. I would recommend you bring a shovel as often a lump of washed up debris at the water line that is a little awkward to maneuver through for launch and pull out. Let us know what you find when you go.
  17. You had a great day out there!! Had to feel good after being home bound for a spell.
  18. Last week there were fish in 10 fow and down 150 in 300+ fow. Fish in shallow were active early but the sun broke out and they shut off. Moved deeper to find them then crossed the lake and the biggest were down deep in the middle of the lake. With even temps throughout they seem equally dispersed. If you have a Spring/Summer setup you like just start there and adjust accordingly.
  19. Sometimes you are there and get to watch the circus free of charge. One evening last Summer we are about to head in and this big wide 30 foot plus pleasure boat comes screaming by us heading into Deans. By the time we get there these guys are in the midst of trying to trailer this monster of a boat. They finally get it loaded, but after 2 attempts, can't get it out of the water as the tow vehicle is an F150....well, they switch drivers and the second guy puts the hammer down and those tires start baking. Thought he was gonna make it, but fishtailed and lost momentum so we were treated to second show. The boys and I were laughing our butts off.
  20. IMO, the single dock at Deans works well when all are patient and polite. Adding more options there is likely to increase the chaos during busy times. Have had many launches and landings there the past couple years and could make a movie of bloopers from all the antics that occur there. I'm amazed one of the big pleasure boats hasn't pulled a Rodney Dangerfield from Caddyshack and completely wiped out the dock and any boats in its way. The boating/wine tasting idea is great when the driver is staying sober but that isn't always the case. I have rarely seen any fishermen, (trollers, perch people, or bass guys) be a problem. I envy how fast those bass boats go in and out of the water, and typically during morning launch, they only use one side of the dock, leaving the other for the rest of us to use. 99% of the issues are from inexperienced boaters and lack of patience from everyone. Had to wait up to 45 minutes to dock during the 10-1 window this Summer as others coming in and loads of pleasure boaters heading out. Very little etiquette from some with cutting in line or leaving vehicles in positions that block everyone else the norm. A few times I wondered if the verbal exchanges were going to escalate to physical stuff. None of it is a surprise as the same stuff goes on when driving cars on the road. Rather than having someone checking weeds on props during the weekends, the park police need someone to manage the traffic and offer guidance/assistance for those prone to wrecking the docks along with their rigs. Just my thoughts but either way, glad to hear the dock is being repaired.
  21. Good news. The dock was beaten up badly this Summer.
  22. Haven't launched there in a month and went to the end of the dock to launch that day, (24 foot Wellcraft). Lake has dropped about 10 inches since then. If you have a flat bottom or small V you could probably get out provided the ice has melted. This warm up might do it. Perhaps someone on here driving by can update if it's still iced over.
  23. Sorry to hear the bug hit you. Rest and get well. Great looking flies and streamers!! Hope to see you out on the water soon. Greg
