I think with the late opener fish will likely be out in the bay. Bull rock might be a good place to start. -
My son did not share the same passion for hunting and fishing as I do. I did take him when he was younger but he was not overly interested in getting up early. (I bought him a lifetime license) Later when he was at Penn State he came home one May and we were able to double on two mature toms and a week latter I guided him to a second bird. He seems more interested now and actually just bought some fishing gear. Unfortunately he is now living in Oklahoma City. He's a great young man and I cherish the time we spend together.

Tough day at Mexico
Kevin J Legg replied to Kevin J Legg's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Tried an afternoon trip today. Fished 17-25 fow toward Selkirk and moved in to 8-12 fow but had no takers. Water got muddy and was up to 59 degrees? Ran to Catfish and water was cooler and clearer finally hit 2 Browns and a released smallmouth an hour before sunset. Ran riggers, lead cores, and boards changing everything up. Both Browns hit spoons off boards in 6-8 fow. No fish off riggers or lead cores or in deeper water. DEC was surveying anglers and checking fish at the launch. -
Back at it this morning birds in same field and also located two other toms.

Went on a short scouting walk and found four groups of birds on the roost. A Tom and a couple jakes and hens came out in a field. I backed away to observe. Ended up with 12 jakes and a Tom and some hens strutting and chasing. Great show and promising for opening day. Also brushed out a couple spots to set up in.

Tough day at Mexico
Kevin J Legg replied to Kevin J Legg's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks fore the advice Rich. Tried deep. And shallow . Two hits came in deeper water. Didn't try the lead cores but ran 100-130 back with split shot and off riggers. I checked lines and switched things up frequently so debris wasn't an issue. Caught the one we got on a bay rat with no weight so it wasn't running very deep in 17 fow. Took today off to scout turkeys. -
We were lucky to catch one last minute fish. Tried changing depths, speed, colors, leds, size ad style of spoons and sticks, and locations and only went 1 for 2 in 7 hours. Fished west to Catfish and water was clear ran east to Selkirk and found muddy water to Port Ontario but no fish. Ran back west and picked one up late on the day on a Bay Rat in 17 fow. Ran 8-9 rods all day.

The spring season......
Kevin J Legg replied to klecko's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I've been out twice this spring. Caught 5 and 6 Browns in my two outings. Friday looks like it might be pretty rough so keep an eye on the weather. Strong west winds are rough and south or east winds are more manageable. Browns are generally available from ice out through May in the shallows 7-15 fow. After water warms a bit they move to deeper water but can still be targeted. Check out post to see what is working. -
It's been cold he last couple weeks. Looks like there will be some warmer weather late next week which should get the Browns going. Just look for colored water a few degrees warmer than the rest. Often that is found at a river mouth. Sticks and spoons off planners work for me.
-
I general start down by Mexico early and work my way east to Stony and Henderson as the water warms. Have caught Browns along much of the shore and even out around Stony Island and Black River Bay. Look for water a few degrees warmer with some color and you will likely find Browns. Sticks and stingers off boards in 7-15 fow off boards work well for me.
