  1. Glad to hear you made it ok. Damn, every hardcore ice angler I know has had a close call this season. Sorry about the loss of gear.
  2. I wondered where you were lodging up there.......Chris you are fine example of "workin' hard, playin' hard" Great Nugent song.
  3. In the late 60's and early 70's it was closed to fishing. When we were very young our dad would take us there and show us exploding largemouth by tossing sticks in the water. There was a window in time when it was first opened to fishing when the LM bass fishing was excellent. I know its deep enough to drown an ice fisherman so use caution if you try.
  4. Falcons completely botched their last 2 drives and the challenge was a poor one, wasting a timeout they could have used in regulation. There's just no denying the greatness of the Pats coach and QB. Don't give them an inch, or they will take a mile. Casual fans got see why the NFL as a product is as big as it is.
  5. We all went to Cabelas stand hunter stuff for late season. If its their label they will stand behind it practically indefinitely. Not sure if that will change with the Bass Pro merger though. The stuff usually goes half price post season. Now on the other side of the coin, what do you guys like for the "new normal", 70 degree Oct/Nov bowhunts? Aside from just going out in baselayers, whats out there in good patterns that will be light enough to fit the bill?
  6. Stoneam2006, you can towel dry it if you wish, but by its very design it has good traction when wet. On days when you would actually consider swimming, it will dry fast via sunlight. In all cases, it will not absorb water like carpet, and dry much faster.
  7. It is a tough, tear resistant vinyl. You can cut it with heavy shears to fit your needs. It will be ideal for your needs as an alternative to carpet.
  8. Work2fish, that non skid vinyl comes off of rolls usually in 6' widths. It is glued on topside and stapled on underside of panels that you remove. I'm sure most marine catalogs carry it but Cabela's did the last time I ordered.
  9. Dan, yes mussels are a factor but they only retain about about 10% of what they filter and there's nothing we can do about them now. The phosphorus reductions can be adjusted, and with the deforestation of the Great Lakes shorelines these reductions could very easily go too far.
  10. Great job! I know how much work that is.
  11. Sweet ride. If it helps, most of the Charter boats and tourney rigs on Lake O have been renamed. You can pretty much rule that concern out. Bananas onboard however, don't even think of messing with that. Good luck!
  12. The biggest concern is what they will consume nutrient-wise in Lake Erie. Not only would that affect the carrying capacity of gamefish in Lake Erie, but also Lake Ontario. 80% of Ontarios water comes from Lake Erie via the Niagara. IMO, the "clean water act" does more damage than good and should be immediately revisited. Sterile, crystal clear lakes are comforting to some, but hold low densities of gamefish.
  13. I think it has more to do with the density of Lakers and year to year fluctuations in the contributions of natural fish in their fishery. Talk to some of those guys Gill T, its very enlightening. The 2 bad winters definitely but if it was stocking density you would not have seen such a sharp decline between 2013(big Kings) and last season. The culprit is the Laker agenda, but its not the Lake trout as a species fault.
  14. Although the breakaway "dropper" is designed to fail first, it doesn't go through the abuse your regular cable or braid goes through(running over pulleys, on spools, through lanyards, ect). It is extra critical to examine the rigger the probe is on and perform more routine maintenance to up the odds against losing the whole "shebang."
  15. Putting America first--long overdue, moving ahead with the pipeline--long overdue, improving the business climate in the USA--long overdue, Supporting the right to bear arms-long overdue, Concerned about our OWN infrastructure--long overdue, gee, isn't it funny now andy Cuomo is now concerned too? Now there's a guy posturing for a run. You want to see gag orders? andy has one on our own DEC. I love what I see so far from the new administration.
  16. The best choice for AMERICA won. It also doesn't hurt my feelings that Don Jr took Eric Trump to Alaska Salmon fishing for his bachelor party.
  17. Sadly, HB2, its the opposite. Despite all time high quality pressure on Kings and all the predation they endure, and the shortfalls in Coho, Brown Trout, and Steelhead stocking target numbers--they decided a stocking cut was the right thing to do. There were lots of important considerations not taken into account.
  18. I'm pretty sure it was Spring only in the 70's. The first year was 1976 and I'm 99% sure it was won by a Coho in the 5lb range, I think the big prizes came starting 1977 and a Chinook won it. I don't think the fall events started until the 80's. The founders name was Dick Schlyer(sp).
  19. I think I know the harbor you fish out of. That trib has a dam on it and is trounced through by anglers. When you fish staging Salmon off that harbor, it will be primarily pen held stocked Salmon and direct stocked Salmon that have returned. The wild fish have "left the building" by then. They are already on the north shore and east end by then. The single biggest factor to the number there for you to catch at the end of 2-4 yrs when the matures come home is predation on the released fingerlings. Warm water species take their toll, but its primarily cormorants that crop the fingerlings as they may make their way downstream and after they slide into the lake and hang around the harbor for awhile. NY wanted to take greater measures to control cormorants but a lawsuit was threatened by the Feds. It is hoped with the new regime that serious control measures can be revisited.
  20. For the longest time I was hesitant to go heavy with cams, I was sure wiser deer were spooked by them. I now realize the benefits far outweigh any negatives but unfortunately most of my spots are not secure. The cuddebacks are great but they tend to disappear and arent cheap. I think for the money its hard to beat the Wildgame cams and the deer dont seem to stare at them like they are hypnotized.
  21. Horrible tragedy. Wishing his friends and family comfort and peace in this very sad time.
  22. Although the pens have been the savior survival-wise, with increased predation on direct stockers, your point is valid. We aren't sure if its a case of "getting caught up in the school", or just missing the imprinting(with all fish raised in ONE hatchery). This is a constant and ongoing problem. The idea of trying a pen in Wilson was just an answer to the poor deal offered (trade 2 direct stocks for 1 pen held) to an area that does not enjoy any natural reproduction and has seen diminished fall returns already. We do believe that high predation, particularly in the Niagara river and the bar area occurs on the direct stock with all the birds, warm water species, and immense Lake Trout population there in the Spring. The Wilson project is small, but will have great space and manpower available, while at the same time allow the pen fish to be spread out. The hope is besides the improved survival, that should low flows exist that they will just run nearby Niagara river, instead of vaporizing to the Salmon river.
  23. Congrats Rob, well deserved.
  24. Wasn't that long ago boats were smoking props in Sodus bay due to low water. Cant imagine it being even lower.
