  1. Maybe you can look for a trade for a short shaft motor.
  2. I caught a small pike about 24" on a lure almost half it's size.
  3. Yes it was a good time. They are doing very important work at the TIBS on Governors Island. Dr. Farrell really put into perspective, the importance of the work they are doing not only for muskies but for the entire St Lawrence fishery. Thanks John.
  4. Any local anglers who are so inclined are encouraged to come to O'Brien's between 1 and 2 pm and say hello.
  5. Looks like just 3 Chapter 69 boats so far from this side of the border. I haven't heard about any coming from other chapters. We will be there tomorrow. Hope to be on the water by early afternoon. Can give a holler on channel 9 if you have a radio. We are staying at PJ's, about 5mi E of Clayton. Stop by Fri evening if you aren't doing anything. We may be in the restaurant having a fish fry.
  6. Thanks for the offer Bob. I am going to pick up a replacement cable from West Marine now so it looks like I will be able to get my boat going. Just hope I works out and I don't run into any other problems.
  7. solgrande, The only ones I know about are you and FishinNY. FishinNY, Still working on finding a solution. Jim might be able to get his boat going. Also, West Marine might have the cable I need but if they do, it might have to be sent to the store. If that is the case I doubt I would have it in time. Hopefully we will figure something out tomorrow.
  8. It is looking like I am not going to be able make it due to a problem with my boat. Jim was going with me too. I have no solution at this point. See this post in This Old Boat http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/topic/61080-urgent-need-a-shift-cable-for-1990-mercury-control/
  9. I was just checking out my 1990 18' Grumman boat prior to our St Lawrence outing with with Muskies Canada and Muskies Inc. I was planning to go up on Friday. Started up the 1990 75 hp Merc. main motor and I decided to check to see if the gear shift works. It wouldn't shift into forward .Then I tried reverse and it shifted into reverse ok but when I put the shifter back to neutral, it stayed in reverse. I found out that the solid stainless steel wire that it uses (not a multi strand cable) had broken on the inside, right where the cable enters the front of the engine housing. I guess it would have been worse if it happened after I got on the River. I haven't started looking yet and being that it is a 1990, I am wondering if it is even made any more. Or if there is someone who makes an aftermarket part or a universal kit. The cable has to be the correct length to fit the boat also. I also really need a new trim switch which is mounted in the shift handle. Does anyone know where I might be able to find what I need? Or will I have to try and find used parts or a used set of controls? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I guess it will be a miracle if I can find what I need and get it installed in time for me to go on the trip on Friday.
  10. I think Fat Trout is talking about the little fin on the lower unit that can be adjusted to compensate for steering torque. On a boat without anti-feedback steering, if it is adjusted wrong, the motor torque will push the steering hard in one direction and if it is adjusted correctly, you don't have to constantly fight the wheel to keep the boat running straight. If your boat has anti feedback steering and the fin is adjusted wrong, it will take considerably more muscle to steer in one direction than the other. But that wouldn't cause your RPM to go too high. If the anti-cavitation plate is at the right level when the motor is lowered, as discussed above, then most likely you need to go to a higher pitch prop. You should find out what prop is on it and what is recommended by the mfg. If that is a standard motor they ship with the boat, the manufacturer should be able to tell you what prop should be on it. Once you know that, you need to find out the specs of the prop that is actually installed. Possible scenario. These thing do happen. Maybe someone came to the dealer before you picked up your boat and wanted to buy a prop because he just destroyed his on a rock and needed to replace it in a hurry. The only one they had was on your boat. So they thought they could sell it and get another one in before you take delivery. Then when they didn't have it, someone said, "throw this one on it".
  11. What is the screw you referred to that you said was filled with silicone and then you filled it with epoxy. Is it a screw hole? I wouldn't think silicon or epoxy was originally intended there. You might want to find out what is supposed to be there. Maybe it is an adjustment screw or a place where a jet should be installed.
  12. Meetings are the 3rd Monday of month every other month, Jan, Mar, May July, Sept, Nov. Sept. 19th membership meeting 7pm at the Moose Lodge in Henrietta, NY Our guest speaker will be Rick Kustich. Rick is an avid fly fisherman and author of several fly fishing books hailing from Grand Island in the Niagara River. He just completed a book on musky fly fishing which is scheduled to be available in January. One of the flies that will be pictured in the book is from chapter 69 member Mike Small of Long Lake, NY. Rick will be giving us a power point presentation on all the basics you need to know to successfully fish for muskies on the fly including gear tackle fly patterns and techniques. This seems to me like the ultimate challenge in fresh water fishing.
  13. Thanks Bob. I will have to check it out online.
  14. jckjr8, Those rules are referring to situations where there is a sunken vessel that will present a navigation hazard if it is not marked. Where another vessel may hit the sunken vessel while navigating through the area. The sunken vessels discussed here do not present a navigation hazard and are not required to be marked by a buoy. The buoys have been placed by dive shops in order to easily locate the sunken vessels to dive on. This raises the question of what are the requirements for this type of marker in open waters? Or are they even allowed and do they require a permit? Best to ask the local coast guard about them.
  15. That is for use when there are divers below. It is for the safety of the divers.
  16. Seems like they could be a real hazard. Especially for boats traveling at night.
  17. There is a good chance you will want to go bigger.
  18. That musky must weigh more than her. Congrats to Charlotte on her first musky. I am wondering if she is the youngest ever MI member to catch a muskie, and a beauty at that. Both her and the muskie.
  19. Pray to the muskie gods. If you have any luck let me know. I will be going there for my second time ever for the outing with Muskies Canada on the 17th.
  20. I am not sure about growth rate of tigers and I imaging it will vary from one body of water to another and also among differences in genes. I do know from pictures I have seen of fish caught and released in the Niagara River and Buffalo Harbor that a purebred musky only grows about an inch per year after it is in the mid 30s. This is from several accounts from anglers with pictures and measurements where it is obviously the same fish caught and released previously by another angler. Length is only one measurement of growth. I am sure they can grow to 12 to 15 inches in the first year but with every year, increase in length slows. Then they start gaining more in girth and weight.
  21. That's good. I heard at one point that the level was 2 feet low. I don't know how much rain they have had lately which may have helped. We have had several good rainfalls lately in Rochester.
