  1. Yes, next Sat., Nov 5th. The tournament is a Muskies Inc. Chapter 69 tournament so it uses Muskies Inc. points system (4 points for a 30" fish and one point for each additional inch). You add points for all your fish. 1st through 3rd place awards are awarded by number of total points. Entry fee is $25 for Muskies Inc. members with an additional $10 for non-members. There will also be a Big Fish Pool for $5 per angler. The longest fish caught by an angler entered in the pool takes the pool. Here is a link to the complete rules. Tournament hours are 7am to 3:30pm. Registration will be between 6am and 7am at the launch on the morning of the tournament. Anglers fish entry forms must be turned in by 4:15pm and prizes will be awarded soon after. Depending on weather and turnout, we may have a cookout and a raffle table at the pavilion in the town of Wayne at the north end of the lake. No alcoholic beverages are allowed there.
  2. I agree with pap. This is very new knowledge and there may be elements of this knowledge that are yet to be known or discovered. I think I read somewhere that there are even smaller parts of DNA that are involved with triggering reactions in genes (turning them on and off) that are present but may be currently dormant. It may be that these other parts can also be triggered by external stimuli. Messing with this stuff may produce extraordinary advances but also may have the potential of causing undesirable or unforeseen future changes with global implications. In actuality this is like messing with evolution. So we must be very careful with this science. Also, there can be unknown reactions within an ecosystem if an invasive such as the zebra mussels are eliminated. It could cause unanticipated events such as other aquatic species to flourish, change/adapt or die off. There is also research being done in the medical field in regard to using CRISPR to alter human genetics for multiple reason such as creating more desirable genetic traits and fighting genetic related diseases including cancer. But they must be very careful. The earth is a dynamic environment that is constantly changing and evolving in many ways. Some changes may be good and some may be bad, depending on perspective.
  3. It will be interesting to see what they do with it. Since it is DEC and not Parks Dept., it might be just minimal development.
  4. Welcome Rob, This is a good place to to learn about the fishing opportunities we have, meet other anglers and learn about the efforts that go into providing and maintaining our great fishing resources. Please be very careful about using live bait to catch tigers if your intentions are to release them. If a tiger swallows the bait and hook, there is a very high probability it will die after it is released. This defeats the purpose of catch and release to provide future opportunities to catch a larger one. Please read the Musky Catch and Release string pinned to the top of the Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX) forum for information on successful catch and release of muskies so they live to fight another day.
  5. I imagine it will be different for every lake. Surrounding elevations, wetlands/watershed and lake size will affect each lake differently. Some could have water running into them for days or weeks after a big rain. Some small lakes with hills all around can fill up very quick.
  6. How low is the water below normal? Sounds like 2 or 3 feet. Hopefully the rain today and tomorrow will help some, and there is enough precipitation over the winter to bring it back to normal by spring.
  7. Yea, I think that might be a newer setup with the neutral button. Is there a friction knob? (to add friction so the throttle stays where you put it)
  8. Could b a Health Dept. or FDA violation if they are being sold to public without proper approval.
  9. If the cable is working freely, maybe it is the friction adjustment on the control assy. If you have had the control assembly apart, it is possible to cause it to bind if you didn't get it reassembled correctly. One thing I found is that you don't have to remove the screws for the manual (warm up) idle speed lever when you take it apart and if you do, they must be reinstalled before reinstalling the cover. The cover should fit back on with no gaps around the seem, without having to use pressure to close it, if everything is aligned properly. I am talking about one for 1990 outboard but I think the control lever assy. may be the same for an I/O.
  10. Has anyone tried to bring it to the attention of local media?
  11. That is great Captain. We need to have more fishing and natural resource management programs in our public schools to help students to understand the importance and beauty of all our natural resources and their responsible management. Will be looking forward to seeing updates.
  12. Thanks for the info S F. Sounds like, it was mainly used to gather catch info to help evaluate the fishery and also maybe to limit angler's yearly catch so some didn't over harvest. Do you know what the daily limit and minimum size and season dates were back then?
  13. I am not absolutely positive since I didn't fish muskies in those days (I was only 8 yrs old), but I think they are tags that anglers were required to attach to a legal size musky that they kept. They may have also been required to register their catch. I think you had to pay extra for each tag and there was also a musky stamp you had to purchase and attach to your fishing license. I remember there used to be a sporting license used for fishing and hunting and you would get a stamp for fishing when you buy a fishing license. There were also stamps for various hunting permits as well as one for muskie that there was an extra fee for. I am not sure but I think there was an extra fee for a musky tag. I am not sure how many you could have in one season. If there are any members reading this who were fishing muskies back then, they might chime in with confirmation or correct me.
  14. The poachers get big bucks for the eggs on the black market. Not for bait but for human consumption. That is where the authorities need to concentrate their efforts in order to make a difference. If they have no place to sell them, they would not be poaching them. I don't know if they would be able to make a difference that way. Just like trying to control drug trafficking.
  15. I ran across this Boat US article from last year. http://www.boatus.com/magazine/2015/april/does-your-boat-scare-the-fish.asp?utm_source=membership&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=eline_102016 It actually raises more questions than it gives answers. I just thought it would be a good subject to talk about here to discuss the various areas of concern that were brought up in the article and possibly other thoughts related to this subject. If LOU members can bring in their experiences or point to any research or articles related to this subject, maybe we can find some answers to some of the questions.
  16. Cool!! I wonder if any of the other tags have been reported caught..
  17. From the comments here, and from discussions I have seen in the past on this subject it seems that south of the border we were taking measures to control them when north of the border, nothing was being done. Now it looks like the situation is turned around and they are taking measures to control them north of the border while efforts are now being blocked to the south. Since they are migratory birds, it seems like it would make sense to have a coordinated effort to control them. One of the things that may have been a contributing factor in their population explosion and their impact on fish populations, could be the clear water due to invasive mussels and other factors. The clear water may be making it easier for them to devastate fish populations in some areas. I wonder if there are less cormorants around waters that are naturally turbid.
  18. That would have definitely been a good one to see. A drone view would be priceless.
  19. Yes it was probably around 10 am. I did hear something about a man half overboard.
  20. That missing fin is because it was clipped. They clip a different fin on stocked muskies every year in a specific rotation through the pectoral and ventral fins. When the fish is captured in a trap net or caught and reported in a diary, they know it is a stocked fish if there is a clipped fin. If there are no clipped fins, it is a natural spawned fish. They can tell by a combination of the gender, size of the fish and which fin is clipped, what year the fish was stocked. Funny, I had to edit and use the word gender instead of the more commonly used word for gender because the language control bot inserted "fun loving" in place of that word.
  21. As always, it was a good time but I still have yet to catch a fish in the tournament. I had an exciting two seconds of hope with a fish that hit my lure as soon as it hit the water. I think everyone on the south end heard my AAAAW!! when it got off. It felt and looked like a good one too. It was a good social time at the get together after the tournament. I like that picture of Capt. Ed with the fish. It looks like he is sprinting across the boat with it.
  22. You have to be a Muskies Inc. member to receive it. Non-members can view an older issues as a sample on the website at https://muskiesinc.org/news-events You can also click on the "Join Us" link on the https://muskiesinc.org Home page to join.
  23. Jim found another cottage. It is a cream colored cottage on the west side across from Swarthout Point. The address is 9240 Wixon (or Wickson?) Rd. It is off of Keuka Hill Rd. Awards will be presented there, as well as cookout and raffle table.
  24. Here are some details. Fishing hours: 7am to 3:30 pm. Start time could change if there is a fog problem. Registration: at the State boat launch between 6am and 7am. Awards are scheduled to be at about 4pm. The cottage we usually have on Swarthout Point was rented to someone else so we are working on finding another suitable location. We may have another cottage. If not we will decide on an alternative location for the awards and hopefully cookout and raffle. Stay tuned for an update.
