I Bay 4/21
seeyawader replied to JFK's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Lake trout in the summer when the water warms up and thermocline sets in is the easiest time to target them in my opinion. They sit on bottom in the icewater and you basically bounce your down rigger balls off the bottom using cowbells to get them to hit. Usually 110 to 150 FOW, At times they are so close to the bottom in the summer they blend with it. I'm only familiar with east end lakers so someone else will have to help you with hamlin area....at times in the summer it's like a lake trout factory with lots of marks, east end charters rely on them at times In the summer when king fishing is slow. -
Oswego
seeyawader replied to seeyawader's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
15-25 fow,,,,my AP wasn't working well so I unplugged it, after that I just had an alarm and it wouldn't engage,,goofed around with it for a long time,,Sunday it magically started working again,,,,I have a 26 foot Penn yan intruder so it is pretty stable in the wind up to a point -
Fished oswego Saturday and Sunday solo. Fished east of Port and caught 7 browns on Saturday, and a few on Sunday, surprisingly calm on Sunday morning, lots of browns around, chocolate water. NBK best spoon. My stupid auto pilot went out on Saturday in the strong south winds, so was fun trying to reel a fish in, I was the penn yan going in circles with the fish on. Only ran one down rigger rod and one floating rapala on the other rod but had fun.lol

Curious what your thoughts on when it's safe to put your I/O in the water then pull it out and leave it on a trailer. Other year I have put my boat in around April 20th, but would be nice to fish eater weekend this year,,,any thoughts on your dates or just watch the weather?

Any reports out of Oswego?
seeyawader replied to FishingNYS's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Here is my tip,,,don't waste a lot of time on the stagers,,,if they don't bite then go deep,,,I fished Mexico Bay from 450 feet to 40 feet and in-between on Sunday and Monday. Caught 2, and trolled forever. Heard offshore toward canada line was good out of Oswego but I didn't get far enough I guess,,,,wish I did but those staging fish marks screw me every time. -
Ps-30 panoptix angle
seeyawader replied to seeyawader's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
So as a first year panoptix user I've thoroughly enjoyed it. For my setup, because of the angle of my panoptix transducer, and the blowback on my rigger cables ,,the fish marks and depth come onto my traditional sonar a few seconds before the panoptix picks them up. Which is cool to watch,,,also the traditional sonar doesn't show which side of the boat the fish are on,,,port or starboard. But panoptix does,,,,Not sure how many more fish I've caught because of it,,lol,,,by adjusting the downrigger,,, as I've always adjusted before to the fish mark depth anyway. It's given me more confidence in traditional sonar when they show up on both sonars and shows more exactly what they are doing in and across the screen...not sure if this helps any,,but makes me watch screens more๐๐ -

Oak orchard
seeyawader replied to seeyawader's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Finished out day 3 at the oak, found some bigger fish water around 380 FOW northwest of port, went out in the morning, took a nap midday and went back out for the evening, we had better luck in the evenings which was a first for me,,,,,we boxed out at about 9pm and motored to port in the dark. Had a 18lb, 17 lb kings and a 10lb coho. No steelhead today,,,NBK spoon and dirty goose meat with ladder back flasher fished the best. Ended up with 23 fish with a couple small ones thrown back that I don't count. Put in a lot of time pounding the couple spots that were productive offshore Put in a lot of time on the water. Perfect weather for 3 days with calm waters which is very rare in this sport....joe -

Fished oak orchard from 3:30 pm to 8 pm. Went 6 for 7......4 steelhead 2 salmon. Every thing took a bite. Carbon 14 spoon,,,black eyed peas 8 inch flasher with green fly,,,meat rig dirty goose with 12 inch bam flasher. Fished 350 to 450 FOW. Nothing big but I thought it was a successful trip since everyone is saying it's slow out there.,,,joe

Sandy 6/16/25
seeyawader replied to GAMBLER's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
My hats off to those charter guys in Oswego for putting browns in the boat for their clients, I could see the browns but couldn't get them to bite. And when I finally did catch one I cursed him and didn't want to bring him in the boat cause my family already went home! Yea, I know, northeast wind,,,Last weekend -

Hey, I posted that the fishing sucked in Oswego last weekend,,,but then again, in my mind I really couldn't figure out if the fishing sucked or I just suck at fishing,,,lol,,,joe -

Ps-30 panoptix angle
seeyawader replied to seeyawader's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Thanks, I think I will need to angle the transducer towards back to see downrigger. May mess up the actual depth reading I would imagine -
Few marks out of Oswego for salmon on Sunday, if your lucky you might catch a couple but not loaded yet.
-
What back angle are you guys running with panoptix ps-30? My blowback made it hard to see down rigger balls. Then I ran around the lake and all of a sudden I could see my downrigger balls. When I pulled the boat out I found that my bolts were loose on my transducer bracket and was angled back. I guess that is what made my balls visible....also is anyone using the real"vu down or historical effectively?

Oswego browns
seeyawader replied to Captsmate's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Fished Oswego Friday evening and Saturday morning. Picked 4 nice browns and one nice 23 inch throw back Atlantic west of the harbor in front of stacks, 25 FOW. Went deeper. This morning looking for kings, out to 220 FOW. Sporadic marks, dead calm, picked up a king and a steelhead -
So many Cohos

Throw a 25 inch king and a 25 inch coho on my dinner plate and they both taste the same and great to me,,but I like seasoning -

What conditions you say! So it's not just me that the waves are 1 foot or less during the week and 5 foot on the weekends? I've cancelled more trips this year than! -
Fished Saturday morning out of Oswego, caught a couple nice 7 lb browns lost a couple, was rainy, cold, fog, my hands were numb. Felt like fishing in Alaska. Seemed best marks were close to the light house with a few charters trolling in and out of the harbor, which seemed weird. Didn't seem like there were tons of fish caught but didn't talk to anyone else. 1st trip to test out my Garmin ps-30 panoptix,,,will take some getting used to to figure out how it can help me. Long leads for browns didn't seem to tell me much except where the balls were.

Latest anti-outdoor decisions from Washington

Yea that's taking it a little too far,,lol,,,I hate windy Saturdays! I have a fishing story with politics story, I went on vacation to peorto rico this March. Flew Into San Juan then drove to Rincon. Figured I would book an offshore fishing trip for mahi mahi, wahoo or tuna. Beautiful boat, 36 foot center console. Paid a premium with just my wife and I. Soon after the charter started the captain started complaining about trump to my wife. Immediately I stopped the conversation and said I didn't pay for a charter to talk politics. My wife ofcourse did not back down. After the 3rd time he started up the conversation I finally shut it down. While fishing all he did was talk, talk, talk about how pissed he was that his girlfriend got a "work remotely" job during covid and now with the new administration she is asked to go into the office in San Juan, which is 4 hours away from the house she bought during remote work.STILL on the u.s. Caribbean island! Trump this trump that,,,while the lures collected weeds. I told him please clean off the lures, finally after 3 hours he pulled in and 1 of the 4 lines was bit off with no lure and another was full of weeds. We did catch a couple junk barracuda., but no target fish. There goes 1000.00 bucks. Can't seem to understand how someone who goes to work on a boat everyday in the Caribbean without wearing shoes can be so miserable, but could guess who his political party was pretty easily. I did not leave him a review although expressing my dissatisfaction on here is quite enough. -

Well said HB2, we finally have someone in office that cares about the future of the country, even if it hurts a little,,,and the best sidekick on the planet,,,waiting for the deficit needle to turn downward, hope they can do it! For our kids future. -
Just some advice about the coarse from new york parks and rec,,,,my opinion,,,,,,so I paid for the coarse $35 dollars or something like that. Started good, informative, then I kept on getting a pop-up that said complete the coarse faster by paying 15 bucks and take the coarse interactively, then last chance to finish faster so I paid the extra,,,big mistake,,it took me to ilearntoboat.com and the interactive coarse was horrible. Cartoonish story's to click through that had nothing to do with boating, solving some mystery of creatures on the water, some mystery of stolen boats,,just bizarre stuff to click through. Don't click the interactive coarse!!
