Took my son and his buddies out for their first Lake Ontario troll session.   On the water by 6AM, started in 100ft and headed NW.  Recent trips had us hunting for salmon and the day seemed the same watching all other boats in various depths hunting.

We hit it big with our first fish on a 300 copper with a purple ladderback carbon 14 taking a beautiful salmon.   Knew it was a good fish as it took 5 solid runs dragging that much copper around like it was cool.   Instantly regretted not being in the derby as soon as I netted it.   Darn thing weighed 23.6 on my digital scale!  Even if it was off by a pound it would be 2nd biggest salmon, if not the derby leader.  Shoulda-coulda-woulda,   either way the boys had a great time and were blown away at what the lake could produce, having never seen a fish that big before.

Ended up 6 for 8 with a decent football brown later in the morning and a bunch of skips - all of which hit mag spoons!  One had a fresh minnow in its mouth and still hit a mag carbon 14 - greedy silver sided monsters!  Beautiful day on the water, off by 11.

Tried flasher flies, mc rocket meat rigs and a variety of spoons.  C14 took the most hits, mixed veggie and a mag green alien.   Hard to find consistent marks or thermocline, best screens were in the 105-140 range but sporadic.   Marked plenty of Lakers in 100-110 range and some small bait balls in about 70ft.  Down speed was erratic at best, seems like the water is still trying to set up.

Tight lines and good luck if'n your in the derby - we should have been!

Nice job guys!

we were into a bunch of skips the other day and they all hit mags as well. Spoons were almost and big as they were.
