if you happen to bring in a king salmon and it got hooked in the gill is that fish still a legal catch?

Nope - It's "foul hooked" if it's hooked anywhere but inside the mouth.

Thanks tom we had a very large 24 pound king brought in with the fly hooked to her gill maybe she went after the spin doc and the lure caught her in the gill

Some derbies will disqualify any fish that has a puncture wound outside of the mouth.

They say you only catch 1 out of 10 fish that chase your lure. If you look up on utube for underwater footage of salmon strikes, you'll see that many come up from behind then turn away very violently. Your's could have gotten hooked on the turn away.
