Shore or charter in Maui Hawai?

I'll be spending a few weeks in Maui this summer, does anybody have any tips about fishing there?

Went last year to all the islands, but took a charter when we were on Kona, closest to the sailfish waters, caught little ones, hook up a few times with horses but lost them. To me it's to much like work:lol:

I did it about 10 years ago on a Charter called Start Me Up. My experience was good, but not great. We did a 1 hr run to an offshore buoy early in the morning to get there before other boats arrived. Split the charter with two other couples and we each caught a mahi before the sharks and other boats arrived. We were told that these buoys are put out by the fisheries dept and act as mini ecosystems to attract bait and game fish. With such as vast area and deep water this helps fisherman find fish. Problem is that if you had first crack at the buoy you did good but once the sharks and other boats moved in on the action the game fish scatter. As soon as we had a shark bite the tail off a mahi that was it. We left and then trolled for 6 more hours with nothing. Was interesting but not one of the better charters I’ve been on. My father did it a year later and had about the same experience.

Hay sharks under 100 pounds are great eating fish.  I was there40 years ago on a boat ride to a far away place and we found some Japanese Hawaiian guys to fish form shore with.  High up on some cliffs, It was a real science with their gear and setup.  Big 10/0 reels caught some monster permit type fish.  Lots of sakie and good times.....jk

I had much the same experience. Besides, the captain/guide left me with the feeling that he could not care less about giving the customer a good experience

    • Shore fishing near Blind Bay

Hi, all.  Going to be spending the last week of Aug in a place on the river, just north of Chippewa Bay & Blind Bay.  Before the rest of the family gets up, I'll see what I can catch from the dock, but after they get up, what are some good spots to take the kids fishing for some high probability shore fishing?

Summer Tightline event: Our team took 9th at the Summer The King of Kings Shootout on the North Shore this weekend. Boy are there some big fish on the Canadian side! Congrats to Moby Nick Fishing Charters on the win!   We had absolutely nothing in practice on Friday. A good buddy Mike Rumig tipped us off to what was going down on the North shore, and we went to work. We fished the Pickering area today in 40-70' of water, and deployed our Familiar Bite tipped meat rigs. We ran Ball

    • Jersey Shore

Arrived yesterday to begin a week with my wife’s family vacationing on the jersey shore. First timer here.  Brought my casting outfit so any tips anyone has for fishing the area, I am open to suggestions. My first attempt at fishing this morning was successful but got a little bit more than I bargained for. This morning saw me faced with big waves and outgoing tide. I had seen some YouTube vids on a double jig fluke rig so I rigged a bucktail jig on the bottom of a three way swivel and a lighter

    • Off Shore Inline boards.

Have a pair of OR 12 inline boards with tattle flags. These have seen very little use and are in very good condition. Have the sturdy metal arms instead of the plastic ones. The arms have been modified (bent up) to help keep the line out of the water. Rear line anchor has been lowered to help board ride more level in the water. $60 firm. Thats half price of new at fish usa. you pay shipping.   Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
