Think i have a bad gimbal bearing but could it be more???

Good advice on doing it complete, but the shift cable bellows would have no bearing on water in the u-joint bellow (gimbal bearing) area. Provided the u-joint bellows is in fact ok. I would guess the rubber sealing ring was hit or disrupted when the drive was put on. -

What often happens with those old needles is that they vibrate loose ,so do not only adjust the needle but also make sure that it is tight in the seating or it will just happen again.

Adjust the high speed needle (mixture) if it's the older style 40hp carb.

Especially if it has the older log style, rear elbow type manifolds I would guess the same.
