  1. Well FishStyx actually started as an idea i had for a graphic on the boat. Pictuer this: A viking longboat with the grim reaper up in the bow, a skeleton/demon poling the boat down the river Styx and two guys fishing off the back of the boat on their way to purgatory/hell. One of these years I might even get around to having it airbrushed on. Tim
  2. Chrome, I think Adam probably nailed it. A coiled wire in single loops (circle) creates an electromagnet, which they say can create all sorts of interference problems. Uncoil it and coil it back up in a figure 8 configuration to eliminate that condition ( I use wire zip ties to keep it in the figure eight ). Tim
  3. willis knot with power pro backing. i've never had a problem feeding the pp into the sheath. Tim
  4. Simrad!! had a sportpilot+ and it never worked right (though I will admit I did buy it used on ebay so it may have been effed up when I got it). 2 years with a Simrad AP14R on the 24' Thompson and it is awesome. I'll never have another boat without an AP on it. Tim
  5. I NEVER get false releases with the scottys. I've used blacks on other peoples boats and really didn't care for them. I like the pinch pad style and with the long tethers on the scotty's if a fish even sniffs on a bait, you see it in the rod tip. also lets you see shakers better than the blacks. Tim
  6. Bill, I used to use the liquid wax's and was never happy with the result. a couple weeks later and you'd never guess I had waxed the thing. The last couple years I have just been using the West Marine Caranuba Paste Wax (solid stuff in thye metal tin) and that has worked much better for me. Tim
  7. I wasn't considering it RR, that's why I jokingly asked about bowfishing. Tim
  8. you mean apart from the Calcutta's they already run? Tim
  9. yes, it mechanically trips a stop in the switch housing. Not electrical. Tim
  10. and the best part is, if you wait until shortly before you need it, they pro-rate the registration fees for the less than full year registration, so it costs you less. Tim
  11. the regulation against night fishing in the tribs is only in place from Sept 1 - March 31 (basically the trout and salmon runs). April 1-Aug 31 night fishing in the tribs is allowed. Tim
  12. Maybe there's some intentional interference/scatter going on there due to the proximity to the power plant and security concerns. Maybe they don't want our enemies using our own gps system to guide missiles against us? I have nothing to back this up, it's just a thought. I do know that last year at the Fairhaven Challenge I did notice that the GPS was showing MUCH less accuracy than it does out of Olcott. I just assumed it was because we were fairly close to 9 Mile. Tim
  13. And for those of you further west, the Lockport SOTL is Thursday. Tim
  14. Haven't seen any waterspouts on Lake Ontario, but I have on Lake Erie while fishing out of Dunkirk. Definitely a sphincter puckering event  Tim
  15. Just meant a less intrusive 2 rods per person spread instead of the 3 per that they run on Lake Michigan. Like I said, over there it seems like they consider it something of a test of manhood to get absolutely as many lines in the water as they possibly can. Even on a bigger boat with a 6 man crew, in my wildest dreams I couldn't imagine trying to get 18 lines in the water. That may be a numbers type of program, but I don't think it is a big fish program. Tim
  16. Not really, I'm a big believer in the "less is more" philosophy. I wonder how much of those guys over there catching so many small fish is because they have so much crap in the water, the bigger kings avoid all the noise. I know that when my father (who's from Marinette Wisconsin originally) and my uncle/cousin who live in cleveland go back to Wis to visit family, and they fish Green Bay out of Marinette or go over to Kewanee, they run a more typical LO spread of 4-6 rods and they catch weighed 20+ lb kings every year. You look at most of the guys on the GLA website and they talk about big fish all time on their boat is 17 or 18 lbs. I believe it is because they all look like porcupines out there on the water. They seem to see it as a test of manhood or badge of honor to get as many lines in the water as possible. You can't tell em any different. Another example is team Royal Flush went and fished a Michigan tourny a couple years ago and won it using a LO spread. I really believe there is a correllation between number of rods in the water and the way the big fish react to the noise created. 5 man crew over there is 15 rods in the water. With a clear as the lake are, I think that HAS to chase the bigger kings away to some extent. As it is now, my typical spread is 6 rods, even with 4 in the boat. I can certainly run 8 comfortably out of my 24' Thompson, but why deal with the added hassle and probably negatively impact the size of the fish I catch. Think about back when the cut bait first hit LO and we all were running 2-4 rods total (2 riggers and maybe a couple divers) and all the large numbers of really big fish that were caught. Something to think about anyways. Just my thoughts on it. your mileage may vary Tim
  17. They ended up with just under 2 million eggs collected (of their usual 3.7 million planned egg take). the eggs eyed up poorly and initially the DEc expected to have 1 million fry, but the hatch was worse than expected and the current number is around 800,000. The Salmon River will get it's full allotment of 350,000 because with the hatchery on the SR, those ar ethe primary brood stock fish. The remainder will be distributed amongst the other stocking sites. When the expected number was 1,000,000, the distribution was going to be like this: The Black River and 18 Mile Creeks have been designated as backup brood stock sites and were going to receive 60% of their regular stocking number, and all other sites were to receive 47% of normal. With the lower than anticipated hatch, those numbers will be pro-rated down accordingly. Tim ps, as I pointed ont in another thread, there really isn't a concrete corellation between stocking numbers and fishing quality, it all depends on survival of a particular year class. Back in the mid 90's there was a problem at the hatchery and they only had 1,000,000 fish to stock, however, that year class had the best survival on record and the returns blew away anthing they ever achieved back in the 80's when they were dumping 3 million+ in the lake every year, so I wouldn't panic just yet. Tim
  18. Yup, I'm guessing they must have been Forschners. I have the 12" curved blade Forschner and it slices a fillet off of a big ole king like $hit through a goose. Tim
  19. Ray, at the LOTSA table just inside the door (in between the DEC Table and the Newfane Tourism Table) we had a video playing all day showing the pen project activities, putting the pens in at Olcott, the DEC Hatchery Truck pumping the babies into the pens, underwater camera footage of the babies in the pens and all that. For our own project, This coming year will be the first run of matures back to Olcott, so hopefully lots of successfull pics will be forthcoming. Oh yeah, there was a donation jar on the table in front of the video display  Tim
  20. LOTSA would like to thank everyone that came out to our first Lake Ontario Fishing Expo and supported both the club and the pen rearing. We raised $1890 for the pen rearing projects through 378 door admissions. We’d like to thank the following People: Bob Stevens, Vince Pierleoni , Mike Wilkinson of the NYS DEC, Ernie Lantiegne and Frank Campbell for their excellent and informative presentations. Our Caterer for the great food and reasonable prices. All of our Table Participants for bring lots of good stuff, both new and used, for us to buy We’d also like to thank the following Manufacturers for their generous donations of door prizes: NK, A-Tom-Mik, Dreamweaver, Yeck, Slide Diver, Power Pro and Jitter Fly We plan on doing it again next year and hopefully it’ll be even better. Thanks again Everyone
  21. Same here Duane. We've been internet friends for years, it was nice to finally meet you in person. That sounds great, I just might take you up on that. Tim
  22. Those must have been the original accudepths, which most people will agree were pretty lame. The Accudepth Plus is a whole different animal. I have my wires on the Daiwa SG47 LC's and they are great. Last year I retired my old GL47 LC's and replaced them with 4 ADP 47 LCs for my power pro and mono divers and they have been great reels, don't really notice a difference between them and the SG's as far as how well they function.
