Captain Vince nailed it. Buy the brand name for confidence in weighing your fish- and use a lanyard tied to a cleat for releasing larger fish especially kings, or a large saltwater float. I have been reviving/releasing fish with mine for the last 5 years with great success. Especially when you have pulled a fish up into warm water! Some fish just are not going to make it, but I believe this gives them the best shot at making it. A much better survival rate! I picked up a few knock off brands and keep them tied to my radar arch all season long, one on each side. They are each tied to a length of a rope that I loop around my rod holders depending on sea conditions. As fish are being caught you can get a fish onto your "lip gripper", hang em over the side and go back to rigging/netting fish until you are ready for a photo. The fish will let you know when they want to be released. Some clients are like me and love watching em swim off just as much as they like watching em come over the rail!! Good luck!

I use the lip gripper style fish holders with great success. I have boga Grip 30 lb grippers 1 on each side always rigged an ready to go. I use them to revive my fish. It works great for boats with a high freeboard. This also lets you get back to fishing or re rigging while your fish is reviving. I use a 8 ft section of bungee cord but you can use a 10 ft dock line- long enough to secure the gripper and back to your boat/cleat rod holder etc. Get your rods reset and clean up the deck, usually by then they are ready to be released!
