  1. http://www.gdc4s.com/content/detail.cfm ... 0e9f7972fa The new system is up and running. Just say " Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" on your VHF radio and the computer wil put a red dot on a screen with your location. If you have a DSC radio connected to your GPS, they can automatically find you and give your coordinates out quicker for better response times. Do not push the emergency button unless it is an emergency. They are monitoring Channel 16 and other channels also, so be careful on your radio usage as to necessary needs. Cell phone batterys are failing when you need them most. A charging port for your cell phone charger is a smart addition to your rig.

  3. Same problem a few years ago. Filled the tank, tilted the boat to drain the water through the transom plug and gasoline appeared in the bilges. No leak in the tank after I removed it, the gasoline came from the fuel filler hose at the tank. Twenty plus year old rubber hose hardens, shrinks, cracks and doubled clamps are loose. Can not get at the clamps to tighten them, ended up pulling the tank and I am using portable six gallon tanks now. After suffering through the ordeal, I notified the Marine Safety Office in Cleveland and Washington of the Coast Guard and no one seemed to want to get involved. It seems on newer boats the fuel fill hose is attached to the front of the boats, not the stern as mine was. I guess you could replace the fuel fill hose with a new approved hose if you find that this is your problem. Maybe just tighten those clamps will seal the leak.
  4. Trailer springs are not mounted with shock absorbers and break easily when you go over a simple thing like a speed bump. Think seriously about replacing both springs because they may have a metalurgical fault when they "cooked" up the steel. Also try a larger capacity spring since you are changing them.
  5. A lot of the hatchery stocked fish this year are undersized due to some bean counter who found a cheaper source of feed but the growth rates were less with the cheap feed.
  6. Reptiles live here under the water in the winter. Remember under the ice the water is 39 degrees and turtles and frogs, etc. survive here for centuries. Muskrats and beavers den up with underwater entrances that do not freeze over. Wastewater from homes and industrial sources could provide safe havens. These snakes might adapt to our environment, so let us end the thoughts that they will not live here. I have a friend who had hundreds of "king?" snakes living under his porches for years. They started to invade his basement and he ended up tearing out his porches. Now his neighbors are unhappy as they have the visiting snakes at their homes.
  7. There are no waters restricted, in fact several years we had bad weather and most boats could not get out on Lake Erie. I spoke with "Blueeye" about starting this information site and it works. A lot of viewers are participating and that is how things work, you need numbers to help the operations. Our biggest problem in sport fishing is a lack of new blood out there. License sales are declining and to start youngsters out right we need action for them, they are bored with trolling for hours in a rocking boat. After they get through the panfish stage, they look for more like salmon and trout fishing, but first you have to get them started. A real good site for walleye, perch and bass is: http://www.ohiogamefishing.com/communit ... y.php?f=11
  8. This is why we stock Brown Trout. Check this out.
  9. The kings are stacked up all over the lake and they turn on to feed when their metabolism is triggered by the warmer water temperatures. They are not travelling so far, when they are just waiting for the magic temperatures.
  10. The Southtowns Walleye Club, S-5895 Southwestern Boulevard, Hamburg, NY will have a weigh in of your 5 heaviest perch next Saturday with weigh in 12 to 2PM. You can sign in Thursday evening, May17, 7:00PM at their meeting, membership $25 plus $10 entry fee. After the weigh in, the perch will be cleaned and served with a fresh caught perch dinner, hopefully for you and your family. This is a social contest with fraternization the main benefit, money is secondary.
  11. No matter who has the legal right of way deal, you have to take action to avoid collision or damages. If you stop the kayak does not have the right of way then. Lawyers make a good living with obstinate idiots who think they know the law. If you have floating plugs they will float up and not snag. Then you will be safely on your way when the "right of way jerk" has passed on. Just at least stop if there is any question of a collision. The first question in an accident is "what did you do to avoid it?".
  12. When an accident happens and those attorneys you see on television in the beautiful ads touting the millions of dollars they collected, remember that a lot of that money does not come from Insurance companies. They will attach your home, bank accounts, life insurance , vehicles, children's college funds, and your newborn children while years go by litigating the matter.Taking money for something messes up your liability in case of an accident.
  13. At night on top, bright sun on top but inline planers to get your lures away from the boats track. Speed 1.2 to 1.6 MPH. http://www.ohiogamefishing.com/communit ... p?t=200396
  14. Solid black is not too visible at night, good change there. Congratulations on your efforts, looks like you did the right things. Keeping the money locally is good for your wallet.
  15. A low point in the bilge area is good. But some boats have different low points when running, filled with people or empty sitting at the dock. My Marinette has bow and stern bilge pumps.
  16. Reverse polarity destroys the diodes on your alternator. It can be rebuilt with new diodes. Lights do not have a polarity problem unless they are the LED type and then I am not sure.. Electronics may have polarity protection. Positive wires directly grounded melt the insulation and could be shorted out now. That is why you install a fuse close to the battery terminal on your positive wires to things like your electronics. My first check now would be to inspect the wiring especially where you noticed the smoke. If a voltmeter shows above fourteen volts with the engine running, your alternator is OK.
  17. Crestliner now, rivets and cracked chines have changed me. Eigth boat now with four years in the Coast Guard Boarding Officer experience and fourteen years commercial fishing on Lake Erie in small boats. Nothing beats a trailer boat going down the I90 at sixty five MPH.

    channel cats

Lake Erie has some huge catfish. I visited a commercial fisherman in Ontario one spring many years ago who had fyke nets set in the Grand River in the spring. He had caught that morning dozens of different species of catfish up to four foot long. Fishing from shore on Lake Erie we caught lots of catfish at night using shrimp for bait.
  20. Amps or amperage is the flow of power in electric, sort of like a lot of flow in a pipe. Too many will melt your wires, connections, terminals, fuses, trip breakers melt diodes, cause fires and trip breakers.
  21. There is a difference in battery selector switches. One of them disconnects the alternator circuit before the battery circuit. This prevents the alternator from sensing no voltage and surging a lot of amps thereby destroying the diodes in the alternator. The diodes supply the DC current from the alternating current in the alternator supply.
  22. The early walleye bite after the spawn is successful using slow speeds, 1.2 to 1.6 MPH and topwater lures on inline side planers. Reef Runner and Husky Jerk Rapala's are the most popular lures down in Ohio at this time. This should be a good system for our walleye opener. Several years we opened the season for walleyes on Chautauqua Lake at midnight. Trolling floating Rapalas on long lines gave us limits early and also a few Muskys to liven things up.
  23. Red rubber bands, work for braid on planer boards, riggers, stackers, in line boards, snap weights.
  24. A new product http://www.safe-floor.com http://www.safe-floor.com/Marine.htm
  25. There are 25,000 boats for sale on the internet. 24 footers are available for $5,000.
