  1. I've shot the Barnes SpitfireMZ with 110 grains BH209 for years with great accuracy and deadly results. Caveat here is that I'm not trying to group a round of six; I generally only shoot two and if they're both within an inch of center at 75 yards, I'm good. On the other hand, I have a buddy who grabbed a CVA Accura LR (long range) and has had nothing but issues with it when shooting BH209. It appears to leave an oily residue in the barrel, and his groupings can only be called that in theory. Eventually, after a few shots, there would be a lag in firing, as if the powder was having trouble igniting, and yes he uses shotshell primers. He did install a muzzle break, which I've no experience using with MZ, and the BH209 was new from the factory, so it shouldn't be the power (but both bottles performed the same). Eventually, he changed out the breech plug and moved back to Triple Seven. It does kinda negate the benefits of having the LR model, but at least he was able to dial it in. So, there's another example of an Accura with issues, though perhaps not quite the same? Unless Rob, were you observing an oily coating at the end of your barrel after shooting? Maybe there's something to this idea of a bad batch of guns.
  2. It sounds like your Dad was a man who thought more about others than himself - he had to know he was in rough shape, but he really wanted you to get that opportunity, and fate or a higher power delivered. Prayers.
  3. Congratulations! Rob will be proud...she kept a straight face for photos lol. I love the whole Dad panicking to make sure all the ducks are in a row and the kid just getting it done. Been there. Big trust builder.
  4. I pulled at least twenty off the dog yesterday, including one embedded in his belly, after hiking the hills above Canadice. I can't believe how bad they are this year. I've never had a tick on me once in the years we've owned land on the West side, and I work outside with a chainsaw year round. And yet Brian picked five off his clothes last week there. It's Tickagheddon.
  5. Lithium batteries will break the bank. Get a 10Ah 12V and run it in a Remington gasketed ammo box. The entire setup is ~$60 (less if you go with an 8Ah battery - I use Nermak), it's bulletproof, lasts the entire season, and should keep on keeping on season after season. And you can use the batteries during ice season to power your other stuff. Remember that lithiums do require a unique charger, and make sure that the power cord adaptor is the right size for your camera (build your own or buy cheap from Amazon).
  6. And I heard the other one tried to pass a counterfeit $100 at a bowling alley or something. Once a cheat, always a cheat.
  7. Ticks have been active with the warmer weather. Be aware and check yourselves over, particularly in the short nasties. Lyme disease is no joke.
  8. Lots of small bucks walking around. Zero doe for three guys though. Out again this evening. Rob - were you using that Ozonics that you got delivered on the 14th when you shot your buck? I use ozone on my clothes, but never in the tree. Not something I'm likely to use, just wondering.
  9. Ditto. Does have become more scarce and button bucks are running hot laps around the woods.
  10. OMG, that struck a funny bone this morning. So true...DG is everywhere.
  11. Is weight an issue in your boat? I love lithium for select applications...ice fishing electronics, cellular trail cameras, cars lol...but for my Terrova 80 I've used lead acid for years with zero downside. Lithium's power profile is better in cold weather and it provides 100% output until it doesn't, but at least for me, there's not much advantage to switching, regardless of cost. Maybe it's different for you, in which case, like my wife, you can just ignore me.
  12. Wow, does that bring back memories. The smell of burning carbon at the dash... Where'd you ever find a brand new paper recorder?
  13. Town buck. You'd be persona non gratis if you shoot him lol!
  14. How did you handle them with this heat?
  15. Where exactly do you attach those leads for recharging your batteries? Good luck, all.
  16. Yeah, rubs and scrapes opening up everywhere. We have some cut stump bushes where nearly every overhang is torn up. Mostly little guys, but we've also started to get pictures of a couple shooters this week. Too bad I've got no desire to sit in 80 degree weather. It's tough to envision even taking a doe this week for smoked bacon burgers. Just the bugs on the meat while processing would gross me out.
  17. We lost three of our four shooters one year to vehicles, and the fourth was found weeks dead near somebody's stand at the start of MZ.
  18. Back to the topic. Did anyone else read in the Sportsman News last week that the DEC has created an office of Indian Nation Affairs and a new position to interface with indigenous peoples? I'm in favor of being cognizant and respectful of native rights, but I hate to see our bureaucracy become even more bloated. Does this require a brand new office and appointments? It seems like part of the job description for existing positions. Meliora, I guess.
  19. Agreed. Last couple days have seen some daylight photos of decent bucks. The week prior to Halloween is my favorite kind of candy on years like this...
  20. All good info. There's been a few threads over the years on here regarding jigging Keuka - try search for the phrase "jigging lake trout" or "jigging lakers". Light braided line and a fluorocarbon leader, diamond jigs like Deadly Dicks or gumball jigs. Twister tails and fluke in white. We used to crush them later in the year off the points, but they may be spawning then.
  21. Nice! And Billy...I hope Tommy didn't request an HD image lol.
  22. Losing two weekends to vacation in the ADK necessitated all-day stand work, and it's not done yet, but we don't have any huge bucks patterned either, so early October is still fair game for last minute trimming and blind work. I am definitely not feeling prepared. At least all of our stands have been scouted for safety issues; lifelines make the high stands that much more trustworthy, and straps were all replaced last year. Onwards!
  23. Au contraire, mon frere. If there was only one leader who could turn this around, we'd be in a heap of trouble. Together, we can all turn this around, regardless of who's at the helm. I believe in people, not demagogues.
