So I have seen it done a few ways, what is the best way you guys go about reviving a salmon after boating it? I always held the fish at the surface facing the direction the boat is heading and then move it back and forth until it kicks. I've seen other guys just torpedo them back in with success. Others face the fish in the opposite direction of the boat heading. What are all your thoughts on getting a salmon right again? Nothing worse than seeing one floating and having to circle back.

Quick update... got the holder the other day.... thing is rugged... definitely more than strong enough for dipsy. Pivots to about 15 degrees so not parallel with the water but definitely good enough. I'm going to be adding a few more to the boat now that I see how well it's made

Didn't check the shipping on the trees... but the shipping is $12.95 for the holders. I called them about the shipping and they can package multiple single holders in a box to save $$$.

I was doing some reading about salmon fishing in Lake Michigan and heard about a michigan company that makes welded aluminum rod holders for a very good price. I ended up finding the website: http://www.madsdocks.com/store/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=catshow&ref=pm+pole+holders and took a flyer on the $18 pivot holder. Guys say they are more than sturdy enough to hold a dipsy... so we shall see. Apparently this company is a metal fab shop that makes custom dock systems and uses the scrap aluminum to fab rod holders. They also have Trees for under $50 Should have the rod holder in this week so i'll report back on the quality.

There's a marina in Youngstown that recently just changed ownership. I'll be slipping my boat there and they also have a fuel station. The gas is Ethanol free and supposedly will only be about 10 cents more than what you'd pay at a normal roadside station. The tank on my boat is 118 gallons, so filling it up is terrifying.

My wife was dead set against eating anything I catch. I took some walleye last year in the Niagara river, filleted them, and brought them home. Did them up on the grill, told her it was tilapia, she ate it and raved how delicious it was. Afterwards I told her what she ate.... I slept on the couch that night but she realized its delicious and won't hurt you.

Went and spent the $20 bucks for enough 20 lb big game to do the 4 reels.... guess it really is a no-brainer now that I think about it.

I don't know much about Erie Bass, but Lake Ontario smallies have dramatically fallen off (at least for me). It seems like the Gobi introduction was the beginning of it for me. I used to anchor off Ft. Niagara in 10 ft of water and pull in 60-70 smallies on a good day on spinners and twisters. Now a good day is 10 - 15.

19' Crestliner that took on water and capsized in 3 - 4 footers. The 3 guys clung to the overturned boat for 45 mins until the cavalry arrived.... Scary situation.

I've got a set of downrigger rods that I respooled 2 years ago with 20 lb mono. This set was fished with twice, then put away, never moving last year. They have been stored in the garage (not climate controlled) since. What's the thoughts on needing to spool new line on these? Does leaving mono in a garage with the high and low temps degrade it?

thanks for the replies.... going to take it out with the 7.5 and see what it can do. The new boat put a dent in the wallet so buying a new 4 stroke 9.9 is not in the cards for the moment.

Upgrading from an 18' aluminum to a 23' Fiberglass. New boat weighs 3300 lbs dry w/o the engine. Main engine is a 200 HP Yamaha. I have a 7.5 HP Mercury kicker i've used for years on my aluminum for trolling. I'm wondering if that would have enough thrust to push the new boat trolling 2.5 - 3.0 Anyone have any experience with this size motor pushing that size boat? Thanks in advance!

Went out about a week ago, late afternoon - dusk. Took a 25 lb king, and 18, and a couple in the low teens. Also had a bunch of shakers. Went out there again Monday night and just a few in the 12- 14lb range and the rest shakers. Fish are fairly scattered still down by the red can but there were occasional decent marks. You just have to work some territory and work your graph and see if you can get on em.

Only running 4 rods, nice night, decent enough action to keep it interesting. Worked 110 - 250 FOW zagging in and out. Fish are still scattered down by Youngstown, but it was a nice night anyway.

I hope you guys are still planning on heading down here for the weekend... Saturday is going to be ideal fishing conditions....
