I wasn't on the lake today but I bet the bite sucked. Yesterday was the worst morning I have had in years, 8 fish on only three in the boat a big bow, Laker, and a Salmon. Thats what I get for fishing in a cold front with a bad North/East wind. One of the ones that got off was at least a 12 to 14lb bow that went nuts at the back of the boat. The weeds and fleas were the worst they have been all year. I had to handline in flea flicker due to the amount of fleas on the line. Monday the fleas were even worse but we did pound the fish Salmon, Bows, and Lakers, a big change in the weather can make things real tough. Also the T-Cline was all messed up some areas on the East Side it was down to 90ft out in 300+ and on the west it was 60ft down. So you could be fishing in 100 to 150 ft of water that is way to warm. If I was you I would fish out over 300 to 500+ that is where the bait is now along with the Silver fish and Big Female Lakers that haven't headed to the spawning grounds yet. Like Wes said if you are running spoons or cranks you better lose the 30lb leader. You could fish on the Finger Lakes on a day when they are jumping in the boat and have trouble catching them with that. 10 lb floro carbon will work if you are running a 300 copper or longer you might want 12lb Floro. Run your long lead of 20lb then neck it down to 8 to 10ft of the 10lb floro. You will be pounding them in no time Sean

Great Report Got to love those days when all of the rods fire. I will be out in the morning on Seneca.
-
I run 10ft of 40lb mono from my power pro backing to a spro swivel then the copper connects to that. You can see any problems with the mono section a heck of alot easier than you can with the braid. I have lost a few riggs with just the braid but I haven't lost one yet with the mono. I dont know how the mono would get tore up on the copper. I get no more twist in my copper now that I use the swivel at the backing and the leader end. Sean

Did a full day trip on Seneca today out of Severne with two guys from PA, I ran to my hot spot out over 500+ and set up an 8 rod spread. The morning started off great no weeds, west wind, great temp at 60 fow, and fish that wanted to jump in the boat. We had a two man limit in the boat in no time. One of the guys was in his 70s it was his first time on a boat fishing. He had one heck of a day with a monster Laker dropped off the 200 dip first thing. As soon as that happened the second diver pulling a big weenie fly/flasher fires, that Laker hit the ice. Then the rigger at 70 fires with a 5lb salmon on the bottom spoon and an 18 inch Brown on the slider. About that time I’m thinking dam a Bow and this guy has a grand slam his first time on the water . We took three bows in that area on 250 copper and 10 color core, giving him his grand slam and some great action. The fishing died around 12 when the wind switched to the North; we did pic up a couple small salmon and Lakers out deep. Just a we were pulling in the gear we hit a good bait pod out in the center of the lake and hooked up with two good bows down 70ft one on a rigger the other on a wire diver/ spoon running down 70. It was a perfect way to end the day. The fleas were back big time but the weeds had all blown to the East shore.

They were back big time in the area I was fishing on Seneca today we had them on the hooks today I will take the fleas over the weeds anyday it was weed free where we were at.

Great fish And like I tell my wife we can always make room on the wall for another one

You need to slide out deeper for big Lakers, on Seneca I dont fish in less that 300 fow. Also run North more towards Severne. Run Mag dipseys set at 1.5 on wire out 180 to 220 that will put you in the 80 to 100 ft range at 2.3 gps. Pull some of the flasher fly combos you see in the reports. Also core and copper run 50 to 60 ft down will take some big lakers. I run my riggers just for silver fish so they don't take to many Lakers. Sounds like you are off to a great start. Thanks Sean

Like Nick's post from today Cayuga was the same yesterday ( poor conditions lots of weeds, with fish scattered all over the lake). Jason and I ran two trips, the autopilot ran the whole day and we never stopped clearing weeds and fleas. I would like to thank Rollie who gave us some info on a hot spot for the afternoon trip it saved some hunting. We waded through the weeds and picked up 6 on one pass before we had to run for cleaner waters. Salmon, Two nice Bows and Lakers up to 9lbs hit the net today. We ended the day with 31 fish 15 on the first trip and 16 on the second, nothing like past weeks. We ran a new fly from Big Weenie today- the Reel Hooked Up fly and tested it out against are best producer for the year the Lake O Glow from Big Weenie. The Reel Hooked Up fly smoked the other one taking 12 fish Salmon and Lakers. Ill post a pic of the fly, I would also like to Thank Jason and Big Weenie for taking a design that Jason and I had and putting it on my boat in two days.

We are running some Okuma Clarion reels this year on my boat and Jason boat. They are fast and have blown the Tekotas out of the Water. If they hold up like they should I will be asking santa for a bunch As for core, copper, and wire they all have a place in your spread. Today on Canandaigua you couldn't buy a fish on a wire diver so the core and copper filled the spot. You need all the tools some days and other days you cant keep the fish off the line.

We were over on Canandaigua today for some outstanding fishing with some great guys from PA. We had a blast today great weather, no weeds, and no fleas. The fish were not in the normal summer spots it was like spring fishing today the surface temp was around 76 but it was only 55 deg down 35ft. What little bait we did find was in the top 30ft of water along with the active fish. We took several nice Bows up to 6lbs, one beautiful brown and some huge Lakers. We had one Laker that was just less than 16lbs and 35.5 inches long and another that was 14lbs. All of the fish were at the South end and all came from the top 50ft of water. We lost three big bows on the rigger and copper and another slob Laker first thing in the morning. Only 4 fish hit the ice the rest went back to be caught on a tournament day. Shallow core and copper did the trick it was like fall or spring fishing with the bait on top. Cranks on 100 copper were on fire for the bows, spoons on 6 and 8 color took the big Lakers.

Ran a trip out of Ithaca today with Jason and four clients from Southern PA. We had a great day weeds were missing and fleas were not bad at all. The lake was like glass and it was hot as . Flashers and flys were dead for the most part today we did take two salmon and two laker on the big weenie Lake O Glow down 120. All the rest of the fish took stinger and DW spoons from 40 to 80 down. We had a great Bow some nice salmon and some big Lakers. We took a great Laker on a ten color core with an orange spoon that hit the scales at 14.3lbs. I forgot my camera today but the clients are going to email me some Pics. The fish were full of bait we had one short salomn that had four bait fish and my spoon hanging out of his mouth.

Fished out of Severne today with a group of guys from all around New York. We had some great fishing all day on the East side out over deep water 300+. Bows, Salmon and Lakers all hit the net today with a few real big Bows and Lakers that got away. The guys kept some of the smaller Lakers and some salmon for the grill; they were glad to go along with my one Bow limit and only had to keep the one that was hooked to deep to release. Spoons were hot in green and orange and the big weenie Lap dance fly was on fire on the deep wire divers. Surface temp was down to 77 with the wind and waves and down temp was 56 deg at 53ft. Riggers were parked at 53 ft and 60 ft for silver fish and wire divers were at 150, 180, 200, and 220 long cores and 200 to 300 copper all took fish. We avoided the weeds most of the day up to when the South/East wind changed to South/West and blew them all back to the East side. I would like to than Nick from Reel Stories for working on the boat today. All of my help was stuck working today so Nick jumped on the boat with me. Thanks again Sean Brown

Fished out of Meyers in the LOU tournament with some great guys from the area. It was nice to meet the guys from the Forum that showed up to fish today, and it sounded like every one had a good time. Chowder cleaned up with his big Laker and gets to drink from the cup for the year . As for the fishing my guys were not sceduled to show till 6:30 so around 5:30 we ran to the West side across from Meyers to check an area we had not fished this year. I put down the first rigger down 55 with a glow spoon, take my hand off it and it takes off. After an air show I get a big salmon up to the boat and off he comes, damn down one, . Now my clients call so we run in pick them up and head back to the same spot. Down go the riggers two more good 6 to 8lb salmon on and off they go. Now im looking at Jason and asking who the hell has the bananas . We decide to make another pass to get our silver fish we put two in the boat under 4lbs and head North to Laker land. We caught several Lakers and small salmon up to 9lbs but didn't get the big guys today. Core 10 and 12 color and copper 300 were hot as well as the riggers at 45 and 60, the wire was slow during the morning hours but the Lake O Glow fly started to fire around 11am. We were one shy of Five Guys, I got a deal with Jason if we put 30 fish in the boat on a trip I got to take his ass to Five Guys so 29 in boat today with some nice ones lost that didn't make it to the church fish fry. I think we finished up at the scales with around 31lbs not enough to catch the big winner but we all had a great time. Sean

The poor fishing and poor conditions from the last few days continue on Cayuga, we did a short trip today and had to work for them big time. The weeds were not as bad as Seneca but the ones we found ran East to West so you couldn't avoid them. We put 16 fish in the boat and dropped a few, no Bows some salmon and Lakers up to 9lbs. The folks we had out thought it was great but after the amasing fishing we have had this year it was slow, I guess we got spoiled. The surface temp was up to 85 to 86 when we quit and the fish are dropping down deep away from the bait. I will see all you guys on the Lake in the morning for the big tournament. Good luck to you all I want to see is a 40lb box from someone Sean
-
Al you can do is try, you have to start some where. You need to get with any of the guys or gals on this forum and get out on the water to see what you need. The sky is the limit in this game, you can keep it simple or you can turn it into a big money hobby You should be able to catch fish on a 400 copper rig now with spoons or flashers. Good Luck and welcome to the Forum. Sean

Nice Job If cayuga was anything like Seneca today it was more like work than fishing. Non stop weeds, fleas and heat. It stinks when you find them but can't get down past the crap to catch them. Sunday will be interesting for everyone, we have a small cold front blowing in and a North wind in the forcast Great job on the fish It looks like you had a fun trip.

Did a half day trip on Seneca today with a group of four anglers. The weeds and 95 deg temps made for some tough conditions. It didn’t make a difference what area we fished the whole lake was covered with weeds. We stuck at it and put 15 fish in the boat and lost a few good ones. We had an 8 year old on the boat he did a great job and caught the biggest of the 5 Lakers one was 12lbs the other around ten . The other ten fish were all Rainbows with three good salmon in the mix. All of the fish but three went back to be caught another day. One highlight of the trip was two good bows on the same rigger rod both of them were in the air at the same time and they both made it in the boat. The surface temp was up to 83 today and the T-Cline is dropping down to around 60 ft. Spoons did most of the damage today with the big Lakers taking the flashers and flies on the wire.

I wish Wes Those girls can put some fish in the boat. I have a trip with some good guys Sunday so you all will have the jump on me, I wont be fishing with them till 7am. I will be out before I pick them up to check on the weed and bait situatuion. I will also be out Saturday with a trip so I will fill you all in on the hot spots I think the hot spot will be the area where you find the least weeds and can still fish

What best "for the $" Fishfinder for Seneca
Hookedup replied to Neo1945's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Color is nice you dont need down scan/side imaging. I have it and it works great but not a must. I would get a good color unit with gps. Lowrance, Garmin, or Raymarine, I am running Lowrance and am happy with the HDS units. The customer service used to suck with lowrance but I delt with them this spring and they were great. I would look at the HDS-5 OR 7 with gps built in. -
Will fill ya in Sunday say around 1:30pm This hot weather and no wind will make things interesting, Lake was up to 78 on top this morning.
