It was one great day on Seneca today. It was my first trip of the year since the shake down trip last week. Myself and Al got our two guys loaded up at Severne and we were headed South by 7:15. The guys wanted to try to get a Brown, Bow, Salmon, and a Laker. We put our plan into action a good 3 miles North of the South end hot spot ( West Side ). I didn't run the wires first thing only boards and two riggers. We had copper on the right ( 50ft, 75ft, and 100ft) and Core on the left (4, 6, and 8, color) Riggers were parked at 50 and 80. As the first line hit the water it took off with a nice fat brown . As fast as I could get them out we had fish on 4 more Browns. As we trolled South we found the salmon from the top down to 80ft. It took me over 3 hours to get 8 rods out. In the first two hours 20 fish had hit the deck. We had Browns, some big Salmon two nice Bows both of which had not been up the creek. Now we had to find a Laker; that one Laker was the hardest fish to get today and the only Laker we caught today but we got him down 80 on the rigger (flasher fly). The guys had booked an 8hr trip so now the goal was to try to hit the 40 fish mark. At 2:10 it was all ove,r number 40 hit the swim platform and went back in the Lake. It was one of the best days I have had with silver fish on Seneca. Also we were able to let most of all the fish go . The guys went home with a two man limit and the rest went back in the Lake. Spoons and Cranks took all the fish, the one Laker hit on the flasher and fly. We were out deeper than most and had to slow down to 1.8 at the ball. Every rod took fish, depth and speed were much more important today than lure color. I got a couple pics of some they took home, the rest were let go at the back of the boat. Sean

Proposed Region 8 Finger Lakes regs changes
Hookedup replied to Second Chance 22's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
They arnt early enough, if the water level in the small tribs drops for the first week in April it will be a blood bath. Last three years they ran early first of Feb. This year we have had some cold weather. One good thing is a lot of snow is still on in the woods to come off, should keep the water up. Sean -
Good job 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 color cores are great now up to mid June. Thanks for the report. Sean

Proposed Region 8 Finger Lakes regs changes
Hookedup replied to Second Chance 22's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Canandaigua, Has more Bows due to the fact less fisherman fish the tribs (Naples Creek) acording to DEC. When the guys from the Seneca Lake tribs realize they can kick more of them out at Naples than Catharine well look out. Seems like the state would protect a fish when it is spwaning and most vulnerable. If Bass ran up stream to spawn would we be able to kill them in May? It be nice to see a no fishing / spawning area on the creeks, It wont happen. But I bet a catch and release area could happen, and I hope it will some day. Sean -
Its the Lowrance unit. I have the HDS 10 and 5 networked together. So far all is working great. Sean

Took the boat out today for the first trip of the year with Jason and Al. We didn't get started till around 10am at severne. We ran South down to the salt plant and made one pass by the plant and one back. We caught some small salmon and one nice one. My main mission for the day was to test out the side imaging sonar, to make shure all the gear was working, and ree spool some copper and core reels with new backing. The side imaging worked great showing bait and fish off to the side of the boat. Fish were in shallow and down 15 to 25. A lot of lakers were stacked up on the bottom at 200 to 225. Thanks again guys for going. Sean

I will get back with all you guys on the PM's in the next two days. I have got busy at work this weekend. Sean -
I didn't get out today, trip got pushed back to Monday, Clute park Launch is full of trees and even a utility pole.
-
I launch at clute park some times in canel, but it was a big mess with trees and crap two days ago. Shamels launch by new hotel is to steep. I don't mind Severne dosn't take me long to fly down to Watkins. I just hope the 120 gallons of gas is still good in the tank. I treated the hell out of it should be ok. Also any of you guys that are going out Sat feel free to call me on 68 or on my cell Sat. Thanks Sean
-
Good chance I will be out for my first time Sat on Seneca I will post Sat evening. Id go to South end and fish, cranks, spoons and flashers flys from top down to 80'. I drive past watkins and launch at Severne then drive back South. If your boat is not to big you can launch in watkins. Sean

Proposed Region 8 Finger Lakes regs changes

This is the way to go The rainbows need all the help they can get. The meeting we had at the FLTA banquet with the guy from region 8 DEC was great, thanks for setting that up Second Chance22. I hope the regs pass, I think you will see more bows and bigger lakers if you do. Also on a side note you guys that love to fish the Finger Lakes should think about joining the Finger Lakes Trollers Assosiation it is a great group of guys. We have tournaments on Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, and Owasco on Sundays starting in April up to October. We have around nine tournaments with only a 25$ entry fee. The club is only 20 dollars a year to join up. We also donate money to support getting kids into fishing. We are helping DEC by donating to stream restoration projects and lamperay control. Second Chance 22 from this forum and others can explain it better they are the guys that make these projects happen. Im sure any of you guys that are interested in the club can get with one of us at the FLTA show in Watkins this month and we will get you an application. If not PM me with name and I can get you an application. I got Jason signed up last night but don't let that stop ya Sean -
Cabin Fever is setting in big time

I have about the same amount of days on both Lakes I catch fish on them all. Your Lakers run bigger on Cayuga and the Rainbow population is better. Both lakes have good salmon fishing this time of year on the South ends. Once that is over you need to drive North on both lakes. So be ready for a boat ride by end of May. The Bait population is down on Seneca so who knows if the fish population will follow. I have way to much money in my boat to keep it at a slip, and it would take me hours to unload all my crap. You will be ok if you don't leave all your gear on your boat. But with gas on the way up and the crap economy you better have your stuff nailed down or it will be gone. Id go with Cayuga on fishing only, but then you have to drive threw Ithaca . I would make my choice on the Marina, slip and what you think of your neighbors at it. Get one near Nick he is always at the lake he would be a good gaurd dog . Sean

Hi Guys, Any of you heard of T-Spoon Lures (T Spoons) from Auburn NY? A long time client of mine on the boat this year gave me some from a bargin bin in a store in Southern PA. I had like 15 colors, (one color worked) I ran off a slider on Cayuga and did ten Salmon in one trip off that slider. I ran it the next day and had a big a$$ bow rap up in the other rigger and brake it off. So I called the client and he got me a couple more. I killed the fish on that one color all year. I doubt if the company is still around but if it is I would love to order a 100 of them. If not I would like to get some good blanks and team up with some one who can paint and get one hell of a new spoon out to you guys on the Finger Lakes. I would even let a spoon/lure company look at it. Sean

Thanks for the Info Bill. My plugs were the hollow type. Sean
-
I picked up two new Cannon Mag high speed TS in 2010. On both of them the male plug stayed in the female plug when I un pluged them. I had to cut the cords and hot wire them to finish out the season. I am shure this is a problem the rest of you will have with the new cords. Its not from water in the plug, my boat has inside storage and never spends a night outside. Does Screwy Louie's do warranty work? Sean

I run the Garmin GHP-10 and it is one heck of a unit. I had a raymarine unit on my last boat and it didn't work at all like my Garmin unit it would kick out at 2.4mph or less. I did the install on the Garmin and it wasn't to bad its a day job by the time you lay it all out. The garmin like other units runs on its own compass and on the gps. My autopilot is tyed into my NEMA 2000 network. So your motors TAC, GPS, and all are connected. I can troll into the waves at less than 1mph and it never goes off corse. I like the fact it has shadow drive so while the auto pilot is working you can have some one turn the wheel to dodge an object and it will go back on corse. Or you can turn the wheel and hold the wheel at a new corse for a few second and the autopilot will take over at that corse. Or you can use the key pad or hand held remote to do the same thing. I also have it follow a programed trail on my GPS. Sean
