I can remember in the 80s the huge smelt runs in the Niagara. It’s nothing like it used to be. I wonder how much of their diet then was smelt? Also nutritional value of smelt vs alewife? My other thought was the amount of bait throughout the year that was available. Were they able to feed more consistently year round?

We used to catch them bass fishing in the Niagara River. You’d think you hooked a massive fish and end up being an eel. I don’t think I caught one after maybe 2005? When we were younger we’d catch a few a year.

Does anyone know what causes a fish to spawn at 2, 3, or 4 years old? Is it conditions, genetics, other variables? Also I was looking at an article from the west coast and it was discussing change in diet and reduction in salmon size. The predominant food is now sardines where it was once more varied. Also mentioned that they used to consume eels. I never knew that. I wonder if LO salmon ever ate eels? In the 90s we had eels all over. I can’t remember the last time I caught one. Not saying it’s just eels. I wonder if there are other foods too that they once ate that are now less abundant?

You think any will pay a fine more than $250? I feel bad for the DEC officers. They go into these situations which could be dangerous and then what’s the outcome?

I had one on my house. Waited till dark, held the wasp spray in the hole, emptied the entire can. Not one flew out. I can’t remember the last time I sweat that much.
