  1. My buddy installed one of these last spring using a Si-tex head It looks identical to the Simrad and he told me Octopus made them for Simrad. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Octopus-Type-S-Straight-Shaft-f-Mounting-Behind-the-Dash-f-Mechanical-Drive-Syst-/310603870258?pt=Boat_Parts_Accessories_Gear&hash=item48516ef032&vxp=mtr I also found them on amazon
  2. Try octopus. They still make the same unit. I know someone who installed one last spring. I believe he went through Marine Electronics for the unit http://www.octopusmarine.ca/
  3. Only if there is zero current. It is speed over ground. A good paddle wheel or probe will tell you the boat speed above the current speed. That is what you want. Our area was about 1.2 mph current this past weekend. Had to run 3.3 mph on gps to get 2 mph on the lures.
  4. cigs have you shipped lot 5? paypal payment sent. thanks
  5. I was able to fit over 1200' on a catalina 30 with no backing. I have since switched to the 25's for wire with 1000' and use the 30's for the riggers. Lots of guys are using 30's and 45's for 1000' of wire with no backing. Their counter isn't accurite, but few are because of the diameter of the wire. All the counter does is let you gat back to roughly the same depth after you find out where they want it.
  6. heli coil insert available at most autoparts
  7. You may want to buy some polarized glasses and look in the water sometime. I'm not gonna argue about it. I've seen plenty of dead fish lying on the bottom in streams , bays and the lake. I guess I didn't watch long enough to see if they floated.
  8. Question. Is it really true that dead salmon sink? Is there any factual evidence of that? I think someone asked a question like that some time ago on here, can't remember who it was. We have alot of divers out of our port. There is a shipwreck out front. They have told me of seeing dead salmon lying on the bottom. I am sure it depends on the amount of air the fish contains when it expires. I have seen floating dead salmon and have also watched them sink like a rock.
  9. I love my Baron Magnum 22 overnighter. Only problem is they only made it one year. Go with the heaviest model. Mine rides better than a glass boat. And its recycleable.
  10. Browns are the toughest, steel head are not as Tim said. Dead salmon sink. Thats why you don't see them. At least that what i have I have learned in the last 33 years on the lake.
  11. 30# wire doesn't take up much room. I use Okuma catalina 25 size. they hold 1000' nicely and a full spool keeps the counter more accurate.
  12. We all fished with manuals in the old days. If you are young, no problem. I switched over when I got the money from winnings. and sold the manuals in the swap sheet. (anyone remember the swap sheet? )
  13. What Mike said. 9.9 high trust Yamaha on my 22' Lund cuddy. plenty of power, gas sipper
  14. Knots work good. Keeps the weight away from the boat and in the same place everytime. I have cannon retrievers.
  15. Check out octopus marine. They are selling the old simrad ap12 design (very good unit). I believe Defender marine can also help. I have not heard anything good about the Raymarine smartpilot. If you have mechanical (cable) steering, you are very limited.
  16. I only used 3 patterns from july till the end last year. Green hypnotist, white angel, and mt. dew in high sun. I also went through way more than 3 or 4 of each. If you get a proven color, plan on dozens of each for the season.
  17. I have been using the p66 on my Lowrance LCx-37c for two seasons. Very happy. I was going through two lowrance a season before.
  18. The guides are ceramic not plastic. Some have aluminum oxide. They may look like plastic but plastic would not last with any line. I have been rod building for 25 years.Have never seen a plastic guide.
  19. Forth and sixth place browns jumped on my salmon rigs.12.13 and 13.4 White Flasher and fly. Sorry no pics.
  20. Maybe a hand held temperature gauge. The kind an electrician uses to find overloads. disconnect battery, charge it and connect to a cold motor. I haven't tried this but a short will get hot quick and spark. You may find it in the dark also.
  21. I like cork myself, I coated mine with cork dressing from Cabelas. They are holding up fine.
  22. You don't need a huge reel for a wire rod, but you do need a line counter. I use Okuma Catalinas 25 size, they hold 1000' of 7 strand 30# nicely. Copper and lead core is a different story, lead is color coded every 10 yards, copper is a known length. You do need a large reel for the line capacity.
