  1. Around here coyotes are hunted heavily in the winter. There is a local group of guys that runs them with dogs and they kill 70+ yotes a winter. It makes ZERO difference. The population drops for a few months until they adjust with big spring litters and then you are right back where you started, It would take some serious hunting to actually make a difference and you would have to keep the pressure on them forever.
  2. There are many East end charters that rely on lakers to save the day for their clients many days. I bet there are a few out there right now fishing for lakers. There aren't many kings on the East end in the spring... To each their own. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  3. I would agree if the lakers were eating other game fish. It has about the same effect as throwing pickerel on the ice. Some people actually enjoy catching them. Do what you what with them, it is your right to throw out a resource. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  4. Why not throw them back and let somebody else enjoy catching them? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  5. Oneida as always. The hatchery should be busy this week. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  6. No sign yesterday. I imagine that it will be at least a week before the docks go in. There is a good amount of room to get around the docks though. Seems like more space between the docks and the curb than normal. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  7. FYI - the launch is wide open. I fished today and we were the only trailer in the lot. Ended up going 12/15 on browns. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  8. Is the main launch still iced in? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  9. Once that ice leaves it will be game on. It's tough for the water to get to 37 degrees when it's covered in ice. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  10. The ice was already cracked from strong West winds. It didn't just break up, it was already in large pieces. I was on Chaumont last weekend. The wind was very light yesterday out of the NE according to wunderground. My guess is that the West wind held the ice in there despite the current. Until the wind got light and switched. 11. Did you save the fish? I think the lesson is to watch the wind carefully. That NE wind got ya. Be thankful it didn't happen in the middle of the night. No different than Oneida or Erie when part of the lake is open. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  12. Sounds like a learning experience, albeit scary as heck. I am glad you got off okay. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    Burbot

Well using white perch for fertilizer isn't exactly wasting them.

Exactly, throwing them on the ice does not accomplish anything. It is a very old school mentality. When I was a kid they would be all over the ice. I always throw them back. Wasting any fish is not okay in my book. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

They spawn under the ice and late ice on Oneida is a good time to catch them. I have never targeted them but I always catch at least one every year. They hit walleye stuff and perch stuff, they are pretty aggressive. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  16. Any of you guys use Spypoint cams? I see they have a cellular model too. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

  18. Last year I saw a buck in March that still had both antlers. Ironically it was the same buck I shot with the rifle this fall. It was obviously a mild winter last year. Maybe it has something to do with the how harsh the winter will be? It hasn't been harsh yet but we have had plenty of snow so far. It would be interesting to see if there is a pattern that coincides with the weather. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  19. According to these guys, jaw aging is less than 50% accurate. There is way too much variation in what each deer is eating. They also teach you how to verify that a deer is 2.5 or older from the jaw. However, the best way to tell is to pop a front tooth and send it to them. I sent them a tooth last year and they confirmed that my buck was 3.5 years old. http://www.deerage.com/aging-deer/ Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  20. It won't matter what carrier you use for your cell. The trail camera has its own minimal plan. Here is a good look at Moultrie Mobile. I am going to get one soon and I will post my results after some testing. Browning has something comparable but theirs is camera specific with no add on needed. http://www.bowsite.com/BOWSITE/features/articles/equipment/MoultrieMobileReview/ Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  21. I run all Moultrie now. My first cam was a cuddeback 13 years ago with the old school flash. It is sort of amusing to look at it now and it cost a lot back then too. I had my first issue with a Moultrie this year. The cam is 5 years old and started draining batteries very fast. Other than that they have worked great. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  22. Good stuff Legacy. I keep a fishing and hunting log. At the end of the season I write a summary of things that happened and things to change for next year. It is very useful for me. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

  25. So they can die in comfort. The DEC does not even list it under starvation or poor food. It's obviously not highly nutritious but I think it serves its purpose. http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7195.html Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
