For the next few months you will find lots of trout near the mouths of creeks and our rivers. A surface temperature gauge is a good idea and anytime you find a spike in temperature more than a degree, the fish will relate to that. This water is often found near those creeks. You also want to look for off colored water on days that the lake is ultra clear. We refer to it as "pea green" or milky colored. Fish are more apt to bite our offerings in that water as opposed to the clear water. Trolling with the wind offers better boat control if you have a smaller vessel or if you are inexperienced with trolling. Even after all these years, I seem to catch more fish going with the wind than against in my lighter boats. Don't get too close (1/2 mile), but getting parallel to a charter boat that is catching fish and matching it's speed is a sure bet too. We have outstanding tackle shops here in New York. The owners will point out what people are buying and share information too. Truly though, hiring a captain provides a lifetime of learning in a few hours and is the BEST way to learn. Trouble shooting wise the first thing is the fuel. Is it sometimes starving for fuel and sometimes not? If after all this cranking it's not getting flooded (smelling the gas and the sheen on the water) and not starting, you're starving for fuel. The first step is to check your bulb and fuel lines. I've had, through the years, faulty bulbs that seemed to be holding pressure after pumping them up but actually they were faulty. I would try going through your fuel lines and bulb carefully and try swapping it out for a new bulb. Relatively cheap too. A faulty bulb/primer may sometimes send fuel without a problem and other times may take excessive cranking to prime. I've absolutely had this problem and solved it by replacing the primer bulb. The next thing I would look into is the ignition on your merc. My older mercurys that I've had had low AND high speed ignitions. One may be faulty. Can you let me know the year of your motor so I can look into it some more. I love stuff like this! Larry

I was lucky enough to attend Webster high school where I got to fish with the mighty Casper Pizzo (my shop teacher) and Tom Jackson of Skybuster charters. What do you folks think about putting together a meet and greet after the holidays to share our wealth of knowledge and possibly plan a Rochester event for the upcoming season? Team Rabid Weasle enjoyed fishin the Sandy Creek Shoot out and the Fairhaven Challenge. Maybe we can all put something together for our great port. I think it would be a great idea to put together a kids derby for charity or something like that too. I'm just brainstorming but am willing to put forth the effort for our harbor's future; more pen rearing, volunteering for kids, charity, etc. Ideas? Dates? Location? Larry

Howdy folks. I've just had the family 10 horse Merc redone. She's running mint but I lost the male gas line connection that plugs into the motor. Because she's from the 60's the old girl needs a smaller connection compared to the popular bigger ones. If you have one kicking around, I'd love to buy it or trade for it. Thanks! Larry

First off, this is the type of thread I love seeing on this site. I'm not too proud to admit that I have learned so much from you folks and it's appreciated. I headed to Mitchell's Bait and Tackle for some of these worms. I have to give him a shout out. Friendly, prompt and a terrific little shop. I picked Eagle Claw pink trout worms and some number 10 razor sharp hooks. Next I reread this thread and then watched everything I could on youtube on the topic. I was skeptical after rigging it up but I casted into a trib anyway. 4 hours, 5 trout landed and at least dozen missed. These things clearly outfished sacs on that day. Since, I have narrowed it down to 2 presentations (one or the other with these worms or back to sacs). A) Pink worm on that #10 hook, small shot, bobber. B) Pink Worm on a "Jig In A Tube" chartreuse head, small shot and a bobber. That little bit of chartreuse can make all the difference after a rain. C) Put 'em away and go with sacs. Last, thanks again to the fine fishermen and great writing I've seen through the years. I'm a teacher in the city and take my students fishing often. Make sure you take kids fishing even if you don't have any yourself. It's saved me in many, many ways. You could save a kid's life!!!! Larry

Howdy folks. I'm looking for 2 retro ease or similiar cable pullies with the sinch. I am also looking for ball babies for 12 lb. balls. I know some people may get a little "testy" about this.......but anyway......any ideas for storing cannonballs?

I will begin to run a rebel crawfish shallow diver (6 -8 ft) up the river almost to the veterans bridge. On the west side you'll find a cement chute that water pours down (like a little waterfall). Again, this is north of the v bridge and about 200 yards north of the kodak building that's on the river. You'll see a boat on a sling. Start your troll there and watch your graph. The structure on that west shore line is insane. I will usually locate the fish trolling with a rebel wee r crawfish (firetiger) by holding the rod and sweeping it back and forth. Most of the action is on the back sweep and then switch over to a worm harness and cast them.

If I were you, I would check your YSM for wear and tear.
