  1. Love that night bite.
  2. I finally got after the geese this morning with Alan Hunter, his son Michael and two grandsons. I remember when Michael was first hunting with his dad and I many years ago. Great spending time together and the hunt was good as well. Now I have a bunch of geese to clean!
  3. Final have a chance to try the geese in the morning. I'm hunting with a longtime friend, his son, and grandsons.on his property. Three generations and I can remember hunting with his son when he was just getting started many years ago. Hope the boys get some shooting!
  4. Yep you can see her ribs.
  5. Thanks for the kind words Pap but I need a nap!
  6. I smacked the walleyes again this morning and heard a few geese passing over. Perhaps the cold front will bring some migratory birds. We have a goose hunt planned with friends on the 21st near Resselear Falls for my brother-in-law to be's pre-wedding send off followed by a pheasant hunt on a game farm and a walleye feed. I would enjoy spending time together again Todd. You're more than welcome to join me for walleyes or salmon anytime, although my Lund isn't the rig you're use to fishing out of.!
  7. I woke at 2:00 am and decided to see if the cold front affected the walleye bite. It didn't appear to as I was back by 5:00 with a limit after going 4 for 6. I did catch more fish on bottom bouncers in deeper water than yesterday.
  8. Prof T, Welcome to the board. Lots of information is shared here. I'm not sure where on the river you are located but I'm from near Alex Bay. I can't think of a better area to live for an outdoorsman. Since retiring from teaching 6 years ago I've been living the dream. Feel free to send me a pm if you'd like to chat as I've lived in the area for nearly 40 years and have quite a lot of information I'm willing to share. Those Lake smallmouths are certainly pigs. I caught some Kings in the trench on Monday and got some of those smallies by Galoo a couple weeks ago. Generally I'm night fishing the walleyes near Alex Bay or fish the Indian river lakes during the summer. Come fall I'm chasing waterfowl , deer and turkey. Plenty to do within two hours of here. Life is good!
  9. Anyone wacking any geese? Many of the properties I formerly are no longer available to me. I haven't been out yet but hope to get in a few shoots latter in the early season. We do have access to a farm in St Lawrence County that is generally very good once a few migratory birds move down. The good thing is the farmer is marrying my sister-in -law in a month so I should have access for a long time!
  10. My wife and I fished a couple hours last night and caught about a dozen largemouths. Senkos and topwater both took fish but the ones we took in shallow on the top were smaller than those on Senkos on the weed drop offs.
  11. For the third month in a row the full moon has produced excellent catches for me. The walleyes seem to move up on shallower shoals and even suspend in shallower depths. I caught most on deep divers off long line and several in 30-50 fow suspended. As the sun came up I did pick up a couple on the bottom bouncers in 30-45 fow. I went 6 for 9 and released 3 about 19-20 inchers. The ones I kept weighed 7.1, 5.9, and 3.5 lbs.
  12. At least you got a look at the fish. I hate loosing one without seeing it!
  13. After hitting some salmon on the lake yesterday I went out this morning greeted by a beautiful full moon. It took me a little while to figure the fish were shallower. Caught 4 all on deep divers off long lines in around 20-26 fow. Lost one on the bottom bouncer in 32 fow.
  14. That full moon has me thinking walleyes.
  15. We started setting up before sunrise and immediately began marking numerous fish and some bait. Most fish were down 100-130 near the bottom. Set two dipsy rods and two riggers and didn't move a rod for a while. Changed up depths and leads and finally had one on the dipsy with FF out 300. By now the charters were in the area working water inside us but soon they too were fishing in the 120-135 fow range. An hour latter the other dipsy rod took a hit and we landed our second fish of the morning again on a green dot flasher and green home-tied fly. Another hour and another scream on the dipsy. Unfortunately this one dropped off right at boat-side at the net. We had a couple releases off the rigger but never had a fish on a rigger rod. Tried spoon and FF with cheater spoons and various leads but couldn't get them to fire. Also ran a 400 copper with spoon, FF and J plug which had no takers. Today seemed to be a wire dipsy day for us. Both fish were males about 16 lbs.
  16. You get em Justin! I'm going to try salmon tomorrow.
  17. Prayers for him and his family.
  18. I've had my very best catches fishing the St Lawrence during the July and August full moon periods this summer and I'm looking forward to the upcoming one in Sept. Not that it's been bad fishing during many different phases throughout the summer.
  19. The Chaumont, Black River Bay fish do seem to disappear by the end of May. I fish the Alex Bay region of the St Lawrence from around July 4th through the fall and catch a mixed bag, many 20-26" walleyes with a few smaller and a some in the 8-10 pound range. Interestingly, seldom do I catch any under 16". In August there is some excellent fishing on some deeper shoals like Charity and Galoo Island in 30-50 fow out in the lake on both the US and Canadian side. These are often 8-12 pound fish and I believe are the same fish we catch latter in the fall (before ice up) in BOQ not the juveniles. I also have fished BOQ for many years and catch many smaller fish(eaters) in the spring and pigs in the fall and through the ice. It certainly appears the larger fish roam out into the big lake in the summer and early fall and return in late fall. Both Quinte and Chaumont had good ice fishing last winter and good spring fishing as well. Could some of the Chaumont, Black River Bay fish be roaming down into the river to feed on the abundant gobies? I'm not certain as there is a good population throughout the river and an excellent population down by Ogdensburg and Lisbon. Incidentally last winter many small sub 18" fish were caught down near Ogdensburg likely due to there stocking program. I'm fortunate to live in a great area for both eaters and trophies and I agree that the ones 18-24" are the best to eat. I also agree in "releasing a pig too big for the pan and too small for the wall". I've caught many over 10# but have yet to hang a 13# and I'm not certain I'll get her mount when it happens. It would certainly be interesting to do a tag study on these fish to learn exactly where they are roaming.
  20. Woke at 5::00 and fished from 5:30-6:45. Caught a double on the long lines with deep divers (suspended fish) and nothing on the bottom bouncers. Going to hit the lake for salmon in the morning. I haven't had any issues catching fish since the gobies arrived, They just have gotten bigger.
  21. Nice photos Mike. I believe that fish was was caught by Brian Tidd nearer to Ogdensburg last winter.
  22. Hit it again this morning and went 4 for 6 with one short. 2 on the bottom and one on longline.
  23. Capt. Rich, I really appreciate your post as they keep me up on what's happening in the area without having to make the hour drive.
