  1. WTG Dre....a real beauty. I was pretty envious yesterday as we drove home from the Watkins show and I saw about 6 boats out at the south end....didn't realize one of them was you....nice going
  2. This is a pretty unique website. When I initially joined on here at Admiral Byrd's suggestion I posted maybe a couple posts and then was distracted by other life stuff and didn't get on much for a couple years and then one day I figured i'd check it out again and realized after looking through the myriad of posts that LOU is very different than the other sites I've frequented in the past and folks are not only generous with information but many members show a concern for others that is over and above the norm these days....my kind of place . I also figured at this point in life after spending my whole life fishing I might have something to contribute and give back to the sport as well. The above examples sure illustrate the fact that this willingness to share is a general phenomenon here and is truly special these days....long live LOU and the good people that frequent it P.S. It has also been great meeting folks in person and establishing some great new friendships
  3. Sounds like one of those "cart before the horse" situations....could have been beneficial to ask the question before rigging the setups but we've all been there I should think that if you fish the Finger Lakes or other lakes other than Ontario the 20 lb setups should be fine despite not gaining much depth-wise as both the 30 and 20 lb wire are pretty small diameter anyway. I'd just be careful to routinely inspect either lb test especiallly the 10 ft or so at the end though for potential damage (eg. mainly due to kinking) or near the crimp edge if you use them.
  4. If you already have the extendable Cannon booms why not just use it as designed. It would seem that you should be fine with that second section on it or find someone with a solid 4 ft boom. I recently bought an extendable boom on LOU to replace the short one on a Digitroll. Someone may have a long solid one for sale...
  5. Steve - I'm not sure what weights you have on them but if your mounts are secure as they are a foot shouldn't make much difference with 10 lb weights....heavier may be a different matter. Mine are gimble mounted in recessed mounts and I have tested them with the 10 lb weights with no problem but never normally run them that way as I don't have that necessity.
  6. I would think that particular spot may be close to the worst possible one for turbulence. You might want to carefully check out the areas just to the inside or outside of the trim tabs if not directly at the back of a strake or consider an inside hull mounted transducer.
  7. Anyone who is on the fence about getting Rich's weights I saw them at the Watkins show today and he has some really nice ones left and once fishing starts he becomes a fisherman rather than a weight guy so get them while you can
  8. That is real good advice from on the lam. Only cable for me though
  9. I fully agree shakenbake. It is hard to understand the mentality of people that do that sort of thing and especially so when it is a small businessman standing right there working to make a go of it....very sick stuff....but these jerks are also the type that break into boats and houses too and then sell your stuff.....like I said..LOSERS.
  10. JB235 and I went to the show this morning and I was glad I did. I met up with a bunch of LOU folks there and renewed some bonds. Also felt better about not being able to get the boat out when I saw that just everyone (other than about 6 hearty souls out at the south end some for trout and some for perch from the looks of it) were in the same fix as me....misery loves company It was great to see the spoons flying off the table at Great lakes Lures and Fishy Business' table was tough to get into for the number of people scarfing up the good stuff. It was a real nice show with good prices and a wide selection of things to choose from. I did however feel bad for Fishy (Gerry) because some loser actually stole a brand new Okuma reel from the box while Gerry was busy waiting on customers. Thankfully those folks are the exception to the rule because it is tough enough to run a small business without that S@#$ happening. It was great meeting a lot of LOU folks I've corresponded with and not had the opportunity to actually meet in person and great to chat with Mike S., Hop, Nick, Joe, and Big Dave and others and I look forward to next year's show. For those of you that haven't yet experienced it I'd just say give it a shot next time but get there early .
  11. Hey Ray....great lobster tatoo on your chest Nice pics though. I came back yesterday from Tampa and it was a rude awakening when we flew over New York State and I saw all the snow completely covering some of the places...oh...geez...didn't mean to depress ya before you get back
  12. I got off the plane from Florida yesterday in Rochester and even after only a week the cold was still a shock and there are a lot of areas I saw from the air that were totally snow covered yet. Looks like the water temps will be way behind this Spring.
  13. Nice fish Joe....and good example of why it pays to be "hardcore"
  14. Bottom line here is that people tend to get committed to whatever reel seems to work OK for them, their boat. their situation and the way they fish. There is no "one size fits all" or "right answer" to the question. If you buy your equipment based on the opinions of other folks you still have a 50/50 chance of getting it right . It pays to try out or get the feel of reels before you buy them either on a charter, fishing with friends who are using them, or going in to stores and trying out the reels drags where they have specific "setups" displayed etc. It has really helped in the salt water "arena" where making wrong decision can be a lot more "costly"....just a suggestion and it is not meant to diminish anything that has been already said here.
  15. It is a different form of trolling and it is tough to run out as far as you might like sometimes I run flies both ways and have caught good fish on both approaches and both smaller flies and larger (usually hand tied home made ones) My hunch is that like in spoon and stick presentations it is the specific ACTION that is critical. The fact that "worn out" flies still catch them seems to support this too.
  16. Theresa is right about the "natural" look of irregularity in nature but that is true for the HUMAN eye....and there is experimentation to back it up in the field of visual perception but as far as fish go it is still a "question mark" in terms of number or uniformity. Spots themselves do relate to the natural state of things in that many species of baitfish have "markings" whether spots or discolorations. stripes etc. which differentiate the foreground from the background (figure/ground) which is a critical dimension of basic visual perception and it also may add "cues" to discriminating movement by nearly all species. Also at work on the examples that Ed showed is the fact that CONTRAST (such as light on dark background or dark on light background helps various species to to discriminate objects and to detect movement so the "spots" perform that function as well.
  17. I just spoke with one of the guys in the Wildlife Division because nobody was at the Fisheries section. I had forgotten they are shocking at Cold Brook today so I guess I won't find out until I get back Jeff....you might ant to give Brad Hammers a call at P: 585-226-5344
  18. Cool Nick....haven't fished for the billfish there but have fished the Coronado Islands there for tuna and that was a blast. Hopefully the weather will be at least a tad better when we both get back here Good luck!
  19. I have had an email in to Brad Hammers (DEC) since Jeff asked the question....haven't heard back yet. I have always been under the assumption that only the lakes proper were to be recorded. Hopefully he will answer back today as I leave in the AM for Florida.
  20. They didn't report the total number in the paper but they had a pic of a guy holding up a 5 pound rainbow....not real impressive ( I got one through the ice a couple weeks ago a little bigger ) Really hard to say what this years run is going amount to or if some of it has already occurred the male I caught was spawned out
  21. Thanks Pap. I'm looking forward to a Grouper sandwich and bowl of She Crab soup at Frenchies on the beach ....the h with this snow
  22. We used to use it in the old days in various ways but it has a much larger diameter than say Power Pro so there is much more resistance in the water meaning it doesn't get down to depth nearly as well. Some salt water applications use it mostly for backing.
  23. Thanks Mike think I'll wait until I get back because it will be closer to his return home.
  24. Thanks Jason I'll be in touch when I get back.
