  1. As far as the trout scene goes it seems to me that the lamprey control may at least be a factor in the differences. At one point Seneca seemed worse than Cayuga and now Cayuga seems worse I saw somewhere that an adult lamprey can account for about 40 lbs of fish (unsure whether that was lifetime or per year) Either way it can account for a lot of fish over time. I'm sure there are multiple factors involved but the levels of lamprey in the lakes should be taken into account.
  2. Just an FYI but although it may make a difference torque wise the weight will be basically the same because the 9.9 and 15 are the same motor but with different carburation.
  3. That fits with my understanding too you have to be really cranking speed-wise to be charging the battery to any significant degree. Idling and slow trolling speeds won't do anything significant to charge the battery.
  4. Good thing you caught the impeller situation. I'd do just one thing at a time to see if it corrects things e.g. plug check and replacement if necessary then consider other things so you'll know for sure.
  5. Bonzoso mine is built out a bit with stuff like Starboard plastic material but any adjustment of the motor angle is done to the motor itself not the bracket
  6. I know there are quite a few things that it could be but I would first check your battery because if it is weak and is discharging when not in use it may be "marginal" for starting the engine and then after your alternator puts some juice back in it has enough to start it up more easily. Also check and clean the battery connections. The status of your plugs is also a question and for an older motor the possibility of a carb rebuild is not out of the question either especially if it has been run on ethanol gas. Good luck with it Sean.
  7. That is the exact one I have had and it is pretty "bullet proof". When running full tilt (50 plus) I tilt the trolling motor up all the way (and I have an extra long shaft (25 inch) 9.9 -2 stroke) and as I said previously I have NEVER had a problem with it and I have fished the rough waters of Lake O as well as Seneca etc.but I frequently check the motor screw downs and the bracket itself just as a routine precaution but i have never had to tighten the bolts or anything. I have never raised it or lowered the bracket itself only adjusted the trim of the motor.
  8. The ice never formed that far down it was about to the Hobart/William Smith dock at the furthest. The rest of the north end has been and remains a big question mark as there are some openings in the canal area on the east side and if they decide to start pulling water the whole ice shelf will be history.
  9. The spots don't look right for an Atlantic and it looks to me that there are spots on the lower portion of the tail as well. It certainly doesn't look like a healthy fish either way with the proportionally large head and extremely slender body. I've been wondering for some time if the reason both the Canadians and US were having such poor returns to the streams if something like this wasn't happening (running from Ontario via St. Lawrence and down the Hudson to the Atlantic. I even mentioned awhile back in one of my posts.I think it is very conceivable that Atlantics and perhaps steelies could do it. On the other hand the Pacific salmon are ocean dwellers are some of the adult Chinook and Coho also doing it ?
  10. Some great colors and deadly for the lakers especially. Looks as though you rig yours exactly like mine Dave...if I didn't already have a bunch I'd hop on them
  11. I have to apologize for my faulty memory The aluminum bracket and adapter plate are made by Fulton not Garelick but the stainless one on the boat was. Here are pics of the (removable) aluminum bracket and adapter plate I decided against and the informational boxes: This mount is pricey but looks sturdy - http://www.amazon.com/Garelick-71091-01-Aluminum-Auxillary-Bracket/dp/B000KOOP16
  12. I may go after the salt water stuff myself (Florida for a week)
  13. nysrx01 -I'd make sure you secure the motor real good with that slide out bracket. I still have one of those bracket assemblies in the box down cellar that I initially bought for my set up but it didn't look sturdy enough for the job so I bought the stainless one. If you hit a real big bump someplace the motor could jar right out of that slide in plate if you trailer it with the motor in it.
  14. And the trash talking probably starts about now right Nick?
  15. Just a reminder as it is close to the end in many places especially if we get significant rain and the ice will be dangerous too. It is also the last day of Pike Walleye and bass in the Finger Lakes today (15th).
  16. No matter what you run for line or cable etc. if you are out there long enough with weather that is hospitable to flea breeding and cover a lot of water during the summer months you will at some time encounter a flea infestation that will accrue on your line. At one point I thought wire and line diameter were the answers but after last season on Keuka Lake when we couldn't get the downriggers up without cleaning the fleas off them I revised my thinking. If they are thick enough in concentration they will adhere to anything and then it becomes a question of what is the best way to get them off without screwing up your equipment and there are a million suggestions on here about how to do it but I have yet to discover a remedy for the frustration and swearing that occurs on my boat at least
  17. Rich - I bought the kicker bracket back in 2002 and don't have the model number recorded anyplace and the boat is in storage right now so I don't have access to it. I think if you look on the Garelick website it is the one that is stainless steel (they may have changed the number etc. by now anyway ) not the aluminum removable bracket type (I have one of those that I ordered first until I saw it firsthand and then went with the other more sturdy one. This is the one I have Rich http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/garelick-stainless-eez-in-auxiliary-outboard-motor-brackets?a=260407&pm2d=CSE-SPG-15-PLA-BING&utm_medium=PLA&utm_source=Bing&utm_campaign=CI&srccode=cii_328768002&cpncode=36-46007711-2
  18. I think the 9.9 like mine is about 87 pounds if my memory is correct (50/50 chance of that )
  19. All I know is that mine is bolted through the hull and never moves at all and I've trailered all over the place. Good luck.

  21. You know in the Atlantic Ocean - Cape Cod in particular they have combined efforts between commercial fishermen, recreational sport fishermen and top notch scientists and marine biologists to study the habits of Great White sharks because they are of extreme importance to the ocean ecosystem as the top predator. Thus they get first hand concrete information and knowledge from the folks out there "real time" as well as the critical other end of it the folks who have the expertise and equipment to compile, analyze and interpret the data as well as generate "what if" scenarios". This is the type of cooperation that should be brought to bear on this situation on Lake O as the Kings are the top predator here as well and having a better understanding of them and their habits is crucial to the problem as well as potentially part of the solution. The DEC has the biologists, there is the research boat from Brockport, and we have a ton of interested parties in the charter guys and sports fishermen here on lake O. Perhaps the involvement of one or more of our state representatives should be queried about it such as Assemblyman Brian Kolb etc. The only way the state responds is by reaction (as in most bureaucrasies) not by proactive action. Albany calls the shots for all state agencies for everything.....his royal highness the Emperor takes it to a new level by micromanaging everything he can and when someone does something he doesn't know about (whether positive or negative) or he doesn't approve in advance they are summarily fired......how is that for a motivational incentive to the workforce? One potential area of influence is the state legislature (despite their many faults and limitations).....his hand can be forced on some issues if enough of the politicians are worried about their own butts and public opinion.
  22. One of the potential problems is that they tend to spawn in late November and into December and the stream conditions may not be great for that at those times (water levels etc.).
  23. I can't help but think specifics of the water quality or perhaps the weather extremes were different for the Seeforellens because when I was stationed in Germany in the sixties those huge browns were being caught in small lakes near me (20 lbs plus that I saw with my own eyes were common) and the water was quite muddy and murkish compared with many of the cold water lakes here and the temperature range over there never got down to the extremes we see here in the winters. I wonder if they just couldn't adapt over time to the conditions here. I know browns can adapt to warm water better than other trout but I'm not sure about cold adaptation.
