  1. The Humminbird 859 and 1159HD DI are excellent fish finding units. Its all about transducers and placement.
  2. This is correct. I have run Fish Hawk units for many years on many different boats. If we are talking transducer interference the only situation I have run into is the 'bird 83hz transom mount transducer can interfere depending on placement. I have not had any issues with any 50/200 transducers whether thru hull or transom mount. There are some differences in transducer placement depending on whether the boat is an outboard, inboard, or I/O.
  3. There are certainly many definitions of success. It has been an observation of mine that in order to successful in the boats/captains for hire game in a financial way, that there must not be a safety net or "fall back plan." With all the sacrifices and discipline necessary in this business, the alternative will almost always be chosen. That being said, there are several very good and professional Part time Charter businesses on the Great Lakes. These operations always treat it as a true business and the owners are truly passionate about fishing and taking people fishing. As for the insurance question, it all depends on the amount of coverage for the vessel(s) and the amount of liability carried.
  4. Thanks for posting. As usual, many still don't know this is up for comment.
  5. Now THAT is art. An oil painting of a bowl of fruit, not so much.
  6. Jason and Trish are in our thoughts and prayers. Thx Brian.
  7. What Nick is saying is if you are going through the engine and updating/upgrading now would be the time to update to electronic ignition if its the old points and condenser. If it's an '89 I'd be surprised if it's not electronic but I guess it's possible.
  8. There is a Suzuki dealer on Sodus bay by the name of Fowlers marine. There are also Suzuki dealers in the Erie Pa and Toronto areas I believe. I have no experience with any of these but it's a starting point.
  9. What an infuriating story. If you don't get satisfaction from Tracker or your dealer, perhaps involving Bass Pro could help. I know you didn't get the boat through them, but Bass Pro is often associated with Tracker and I'm sure would not enjoy the negative word being spread. Maybe someone in their boat sales could help reach the right people or get some satisfactory action for you.
  10. Although not necessarily a dead forever, the 2 tournament concept is suspended for this season. The 2016 Niagara Pro-Am will be a unique 3 day event, May 20,21,22, 2016. Full field every day. Scoring system still to be determined. I believe the "open" division will also be 3 days.
  11. Call imarine or Airmar to make sure you get the correct one, Rob. Not sure what that description means-"Depth only". Jacker probably knows but he wants you fish blind in the king of the oak series, LOL. In all seriousness, inboards should only have thru hulls whether the flush mount or regular with a fairing block. I/Os and Outboards can use a transom mount, as the signal will be less disturbed by turbulence on the transom in those styles. I have thru hulls on the Viking and transom mount on the Northie.
  12. With gas prices forecasted to remain approx half what they were the last several years, there is no better time to "get your feet wet" in the exhilarating tourny game on Lake Ontario. It doesnt matter whether its a crazy bite or a tough grind, you will most likely leave the event ready for more. The friendships made whether built through teammates or competitors are what its all about. The camaraderie and sportsmanship is for the most part on display, wherever the events are held. Most of the top finishers have had their days in the sun and at the bottom of the barrel, but they will all tell you they learned the most when finishing the lowest. The seminars available today are great and helpful, but ask any regular tournament fisherman what competing in the events has done for their proficiency and ability to be successful on the water and I'm sure you will be impressed with what they have to say.
  13. Thanks for your commitment, Matt. Sodus Pt is always the highlight for us on the Tourny trail.
  14. Rob is right IMO, the ML actions are just a bit sloppy handling paddles with or without fish on at the surface. Just for personal taste I like at least 8.5' rods unless is Spring shoreline fishing. Catch a King on a 7.5' ML rod and 10lb test--thats living!
  15. I like the tilted element models which mount nearly flush to the bottom and eliminate the need for a fairing block. I don't recommend this model ducer on an aluminum boat however, only glass. Airmar makes transducers for the specific make of your fish finder as well as the deadrise of your hull.
  16. My personal choice are the Blue Diamond series Okuma rods but for paddles in any of the lines go Med and not Med light. The Classic series has lots of glass and would suit what you're looking for Bruce.
  17. The 1159 matched w/ an airmar thru hull is a killer Lake O combo.
  18. Thanks Burkey, always a great time to visit Oswego and some giant BTs and Kings go down there that week. We also took our seasons best 19.5 lb Steelhead prefishing last year before the event.
  19. Good call guys, that goes along with the theme of versatility your tourny has.
  20. Nice work Paul, that's what they look like. I'm trying to steer my clients into strictly repros on a trout like that and put the big breeders back. Is that one a reproduction or skin mount?
  21. Last fall saw a great majority of STOCKED Kings mature in their second year, it didn't seem to be as extreme a proportion in the wild population. There will always be wild swings in the naturally produced population, but concerned interests all around the lake are looking at different ways to increase survival of the planted Chinnys. We are hoping for the best.
  22. Beautiful specimen caught right next to me on Frank Campbells boat. It looked to be a chunky female entering its 3rd and final Summer. His solo angler elected to keep it so we examined it at cleaning station. Maturing female naturally produced(no adipose clip), with 2 large smelt in it and several gizzard shad which are what the lakers are gorging on currently. It was 39 degree water flowing from river. Looks like any 3 or 4 yr olds out there will be carrying some LBs this season.
  23. We are all waiting as many different peoples schedules are dependent on knowing but I'm fairly certain the dates of May 20, 21, 22 are correct.
  24. Thx Rick. Any talk of modifying the format for June 10th so it isn't just a "Laker fest" ?
  25. Not confirmed but because they wish to stay with the Niagara Cup theme I heard the latest was all 3 days "full field" making it a unique one weekend event. The event would be scored with total scores but the cup would be awarded based on their scoring system and 3 separate points scored based on where you finished that day.
