  1. You are not wrong, Chris! Great guys who definitely have the Tourny bug. Trust me, its a 52 fter but its a speed demon!
  2. Great Job Tim, and to Joe Yeager and Bill Hilts Jr as well. I'm not sure how it will all shake out to the "bean counters", but the show organizers, staff, and Sportfishing liasons were some of the most accomodating and cordial I've been around. I guess we can all agree, these types of things are needed very badly in the NF area. Very happy that the pen project benefited as well.
  3. I figured that was the case. Well, start by telling the forum where you are located and how far you are willing to travel. If you dont hear from anyone, walk the docks and introduce yourself to as many operators as you can. No one will consider even a teaching gig without meeting you in person. Good luck!
  4. Depends on the operation you are potentially working for. Most legit Captains carry insurance that covers one crew member. There are MANY illegal operations, so be sure any potential operator you work with has an updated license and crew and liability insurance.
  5. There is no one answer to this. When the mate is a son or grandson, sometimes they start very young. Otherwise generally not younger than 16. Requirements are energetic, eager to learn, ability to get along with a myriad of different personalities, reliable, safety minded, capable of taking instruction, capable of handling constructive criticism. Sense of humor ius very handy.
  6. Nick the Marketplace "flea" is the Sunday Jan 25th and it will run side by side with the main show which is in same bldg Jan 23--25. More and more of the manufacturers are exhibiting in the main show and the marketplace. I know Dreamweaver and Fish Hawk will be there. All the info should be on the LOTSA website and I would think setting up a new rig it would be worth the ride for you. Its in NF NY.
  7. Fish Hawk will be at the Niagara Fishing Expo Jan 23-25 in Niagara Falls NY.
  8. Good summary, Gill-T. The only thing I would add is if you take less experienced people fishing, the levelwind will result in far less line twist. Drifting for Smallmouth or Steelhead is commonly done with spinning rods, but often result in the angler reeling against the drag, or mistiming when they should grab line. If they can grasp the levelwind, they can crank until "butter is made" and no harm done. If they do this with a spinning reel, you will be untangling knots and cutting back.
  9. Sodus Pt is a great location for a Tournament. We look forward to it every year and the committee does a great job.
  10. Thanks Burky for your efforts. Always a blast. Ace, chartering is the only way to participate in all the events. Clients can be involved in these exciting events for a fraction of the cost of playing in a saltwater event. Once they do it they come back forever. Hope to see you in O-town.
  11. I'm feeling a normal Spring(you know, the "new" normal). April/May= Bring it!
  12. This is all true Skipper, but in the 80's they gorged on alewives and there were other severe winters delaying the bug hatches. I don't think they have this all sorted out yet. It would be interesting to find out if it has had more of an affect on Altmar hatchery fish than the wilds or Canadian planted Steel.
  13. Thanks Rob. His name was much more commonplace in the 80's, yet he remains a true hero as was the late great Bill Pearce of NY. Looking forward to reading his book. I have actually been to Bear creek and the Platte river. Very cool to learn he actually stocked some from a bucket. Those dieoffs due to overpopulation on Lake Michigan described in the article, were commonplace here on Lake Ontario in the 70's. Talk about taking lemons and making lemonade. Kudos.
  14. Yes, when its a stick bite and they are on emeralds these fit the bill. Excellent in clear water and run true out of the box. I've heard they are doing damage on Walleye as well.
  15. Sorry for your loss. What a gift of memories she gave you. Fortunate son and family to have had her as a mom.
  16. Legacy Rob, great idea and I enjoyed reading your summary. Congrats on your son joining the ranks, priceless memories will be made. I have to agree, for the most part deer numbers are down and in some areas the free flowing doe tags dont make sense. Sure in the sanctuarys of 5 to 40 acre parcels with no hunting taking place it can appear over populated, but where typical pressure is occuring it does seem the herd is down. Sean, your venting is understandable. The NYS Whitetail experience must be taken with a grain of salt. I only recently started hunting out of state, but if I had to give up one or the other it would be NY as careless behavior and blown hunts are the norm whether on public or private.
  17. Depending when those pulleys were made, there was a short run that were more likely to experience that. First, check and make sure all the screws are drawn up evenly and tightly. If yes, they will probably swap them out. The reason it was happening was the material used for that short period of time was affected by humidity and actually swelled. This caused the pulley to "cant" to one side or the other leading to the cable jumping. As for the auto stops, I would definitely set them so the weight remains in the water as this prevents them from swinging wildly while hanging--which could result in a breakoff or damage your boat. The TS series automatically slows as it approaches the surface.
  18. Yankee is correct. The Airmar 600w in both thru hulls and transom mount have served me well and are a huge upgrade over most provided transducers.
  19. Merry Christmas to all!!! Nautitroller, you should be proud--kudos to your son. God bless all our military and Police officers. Thank you for your service.
  20. Congrats to you and your family!
  21. The deer in pressured areas are starting to take chances in late afternoons now, the mornings on the other hand are ghost town. They appear to be well bedded down prior to shooting light. These observations are from heavily hunted northern Niagara county, of course in the 'burbs or in lightly pressured areas it can still happen anytime. Good luck to all.
  22. Congrats! A tradition is to cube up those tenderloins(inner loins) and eat them right away--don't freeze them. Saute in butter or olive oil with your choice of onions, peppers, mushrooms, or all of it. Served by itself or over rice or wheat pasta. Some take the tradition further and insist you share the first meal with those that were with you or helped you.
  23. And so it begins. It was nice to see the WHI post, but the official start to the 2015 Tourny season is when you put the perch rods down and start dreaming about inland pelagics. Thanks Tom.
