Announcing the "Lake Ontario Championship Series-Quest for the Cup"! Ever since the original, "Challenge Cup", and all the history that went with it was unceremoniously dumped , the true spirit of Lakewide competition went away with it. I am privilidged and humbled to be asked to chair a committee of Tournament coordinators and participants who have all wanted to see this restored. Alot of of back and forth and compromise went into designing a series that honors the history of the "Cup" concept(all the way back to 1994), while embracing the new with a real emphasis on growth. Everyone on the committee, representing Wilson to Oswego, feels that our incredible fishery hasn't even scratched the surface of what potential it has in the "Team Tournament" arena, and hopefully this series is the beginning. Some of the committee wanted the format to be easier to win, others wanted it to be much more exclusive. What we came up with we believe is a perfect blend of the old and the new, and should allow newer teams to "give it a go". Thanks to some great sponsorships, a team entry to "fish the overall" will be $100. It is our intention to pay a 50%/30%/20% for the top 3 scoring teams, and due to those same sponsors we can already offer $3000 to first place! Of course, with more entrants and sponsors, this number can increase. It is the intention of the committee to be "inclusive", not exclusive when it comes to participating tournaments and teams. The Tournaments that have already committed to this series are: The Wilson Invitational, The Oak Orchard Open, The Sodus Pro-Am, The Oswego Pro-Am, and the A-Tom-Mik Invitational. A special thanks goes to:1) the Wilson Harbor Invitational $1000 sponsorship and a $300 sponsorship on behalf of the fledgling Oak Orchard Open,2) the A-Tom-Mik Invitational $1000 sponsorship and a $300 sponsorship on behalf of The Oswego Pro-Am, which is still getting it's feet back under it, 3) the Sodus Pro-Am $1000, which is a tremendous committment considering that event is only going into it's 2nd year. It is our sincere hope that other Lake Ontario events join the series. These events must be Salmon and Trout Tournaments utilizing observers, have a "No Comm" policy, and make or pledge a sponsorship to the Lake Ontario Championship series committee. A facebook page has been created by one of our dedicated committee members, with a complete rundown of the rules. Remember, this took compromise. I'm looking forward to the rebirth of the "Cup", and I want to thank all of those who blazed the trail and traveled the lake since 1994 making this such a worthwhile quest!

Good question Brian, thats probably something they are tossing around. Considering the time of year(warming surface temps) out of respect for the trout I would suggest no cull . I know these guys put alot of thought into this. Keep in mind they will want to keep it "one division friendly". If culling was allowed it could be tougher for the less experienced teams. Because the AM divisions have been so poorly participated, having one nice prize for the top scoring AM is brilliant. Typically, with small fields in that division there was only one true prize. Now, the AMs can fish for the whole purse AND have their special prize. Good job, committee. No matter what they decide for box, 9,10, or 12, save the date Brian because this is right up your alley. I'm sure further restriction will have to be put on the Lakers but whether its one or two of those you know them by name!

Orleans County Pro Am CANCELLED!
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to GAMBLER's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
Thats not necessarily true, Mav. Whats being considered a Pro-Am in Niagara these days is "night and day" different from what came over from Michigan in 1985. Its a generic term used in many sporting events. I'm excited to see what the new committee comes up with at the Oak, a port certainly worthy of a tournament. -

Any Set up suggestions for 16ft Deep V
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Unclepaul's topic in This Old Boat
Uncle paul, I think the guys want you to make sure you have the right amount of foam under the floor for flotation, not just that shes watertight. The suggestion of mounting a board across is a good one. That how I got started. A 2 x 6 with 2 manuals(downriggers). It got mounted on whatever we could get to fish out of. We just clamped it to the sides of the gunnels and in your case would definitely provide some rigidity. -

Brezman, If its a bracket mount swim platform, then yes it is removeable. I have done this more than once. If you are fairly handy then you can do it with a helper. Make sure any transom holes where the hardware are removed get plugged with stainless hardware and quality caulk made for use below waterline. You could have a glass guy fill the holes, but a future owner may prefer the swim platform back on. If you are unsure about any of this have a boatyard do it. Good luck.

If you do, buy the brand name. The knock-offs are inferior and end up dropping fish. The scale is fairly accurate, but they are not perfect in not causing damage to the fish. If you are harvesting the fish, they will allow people that do not want to hold the fish or are not strong enough to hold them to display them. As a catch and release tool, I think they are best used grasping the fish(primarily large Kings and Lakers) while in the water and dislodging the hook while the water supports the fishes weight. If used on smaller Salmon and trout the jaws aren't as heavy and they can split. If you do buy one to aid in safely releasing large Kings, remember to use the lanyard as one snap of the head will rip it out of your hand. Warm water releases after long battles with large Salmon are challenging at best, but sometimes a King can be pulled through the water allowing water to flow across the gills and it will be better prepared to plunge down. I believe I read where the Yankee boys even utilize a tow rope for this purpose.
