  1. I'm not a fan of the Blue diamond rods. Too stiff in my opinion. The Okuma classic pro GLT 10' dipsy rods a little cheaper and less stiff. Needs a twillie tip. They sell them at Dicks. Personally for the money and my favorite rods for wire are Eagle Starfire 10' rods. Hills Valleye and STreams has them for $20 a rod in Elmira, NY. Easy to get out of the rod holders too:) I run Okuma Convectors and I think they are a great reel. Clarions are another great reel but 40 to 50 dollars more and I would go with shimano if I was paying that much. If you want roller rods get your wallet out and go Shimano. I got to use a pair this year paired with Shimanos tekota 600lc reels and they are nothing short of phenomenal Top dollar but you can't go wrong with this setup. Good luck!
  2. If the weather holds up. I'm hoping to be fishing the Oak this Saturday! It will be my first trip there.
  3. Congrads! That is one big Laker! I would love to see a pic if you got it.
  4. Well I vowed I would post all my reports good or bad. I could not wait to be on the water all night for a chance to catch a walleye. I looked at some reports from last year for Owasco and oneida Lake. I read Hookedups reports and I really just got antsy after that So Steve, Josh and I launched at Emerson park around 4am to see if would could catch some of those eyes. There was a light S wind all morning. We started with all stickbaits of different brands but mainly Rapalas. I started at 1.8 to 2.0 MPH at the ball. I frequently changed my speed eventually going a little slower. I marked a lot of fish off bottom 35 to 45 fow. Nothing, nothing and nothing So about 8am we switched out to warm harnesses and slowed way down between .5 to 1.7mph. I kept working one point in praticular cause of what I was marking but I could not buy a bite. By ten it started to get really sunny but there was still a good chop on the water. Eventually we hooked up on this Jack perch about 15" We kept at it not giving up but nothing after that. I tried out deep for a bit but could not find anything out there. No bait but a few marks 80 plus ft. I switched my program out and tried for the bows out deep but again I could not find bait out deep. I packed everything up around 2, I think. We then got some icecream in Kingferry. This trip had to be single worst adventure trolling yet but it beat work by a long shot. It was my first time trolling for Walleye but I thought I would still pull at least one out. I only worked the N end mainly the East side. We did travel 5miles south of the N end but that was the farthest we went.
  5. Great job Nick! I have yet to get my grand slam, but I'm sure I will get it soon.
  6. Nice Bow and LL! I was looking for those guys this weekend but only found a few dinks.
  7. Yep. Braid is no stretch but this time year there are a lot of fleas. I don't find it hard to set the dipsys but it does take some practice. As said before it should be a little snap of the wrist and it should pop loose. New dipsys do take a little to break in. Other suggestions is keep your drag loose. When you lift your rod tip up do it in smooth gentle motion. This could be how you are pulling the hooks out. Any fish over ten lbs you have to nurse them in. That may require slowing down. Hope this helps [ Post made via iPhone ]
  8. Great Job Team Oh Baby Save a spook for me Gary! I'm going to have to make a trip real soon!
  9. LMAO Ben! I think dad still wants to get even with me for leaving 3 perch in is live well for a few days. OOPS Nick, sounds like a great time. Glad to see you got the kids out. I did not mention it but Sunday the weeds were not as bad as the day before which made things a lot better We still would run into a pod here and there that would make a mess. The fleas are a nuisance for sure. I run 30lb mono on my riggers with either a albright not or small swivel to attach a 6 to 8 ft section of flurocarbon. Most weeds and fleas get caught here rather then at the tag end. I have gotten pretty quick at clearing fleas. I pull it down the line a few inches. This helps cut it a little. Then pinch it off real hard. The mono can handle the stress at least on the fingers.
  10. Awesome!Glad to hear it. I'm sure I saw you out there but don't know what your boat looks like. [ Post made via iPhone ]
  11. Saturday- I had Paul, Bob and Steve with me. We were all set up before first light just south of AES. We trolled N and stayed between AES and Sheld. all day. Strong NW wind. I don't think we even caught a fish until maybe 8am. It was slow for us all day. I think we managed to boat 10 or 11 fish. Biggest fish was almost 6lbs. Weeds were god awful. We packed up at 1:30. I ended up loosing a Mag dipsy, wh hammer SD and Fly after a tangle between my inside and outside dipsy. I think a pod of weeds and the wind were to blame. Temps between AES and Sheld 32-36 down varied depending where you were at but was 56 degrees Sunday- Got a good nights worth of sleep. I had Bob and Steve with me. Paul's back was giving him some grief so he made a good decision and stayed home to rest. Hope he is doing better. we did pretty much the same thing as the day before cause we marked a lot of fish but had no takers. So I was hoping they would be more active after the front had past through. Right off the bat I hit a small Bow on the a small stinger spoon. Things were on the slow side but steady for the most part. When we hit fish we were usually doubling up. We boated 20 to 25 fish I would say. No real big ones but we had a good time. My 475ft of copper took 4 of our biggest lakers for the day on a MTdew SD and Salty Balls. Wire at 290 with the crazy B*tch was probably the most productive rod both days. The last hr we fished Sheld to Longpoint and picked up I think 4 fish. I kind of through a hail mary pass by changing up my SD/Fly colors out. In the order I changed them fish hit. I thought that was pretty cool. The last SD was one that Jason gave to me. Seneca Special paired with Big Weenie's Cornbread. I put that on a rigger and sent it down a 100ft and it took a 4lb laker. Temps between AES and Sheld were much warmer. 40 to 46 downd ran about 56 degrees Congrads to Playin Hookie with that beast of a Laker the weighed over 16lbs Pictures to come. Somer reason it won't let me add any.
  12. Thats brings a whole new meaning to boat load of fish!
  13. Well I could not find the big ones but did ok! Had a blast fishing the derby! 8lbs 6lbs 6lbs 5lbs 15oz 5lbs 10oz
  14. I will be on Cayuga! I hope Team Seneca don't fall to far behind cause of all my big Slobs
  15. I don't pay much attention part of the forum but I'm getting into Walleye fishing and I do love your reports. Good job and Thank you!
  16. I got out of work as usuall with Steve at 6am. We drove staight home to load up the boat and met my friend Ben with his dad and brother. His brother just turned 13 today and never been trolling before. Ok neither did Ben's dad Chris ever been trolling like this before either Launched at Myers and Motored N. Set up my ten rod spread. 4 dipsys, 3 riggers, 300' copper, 475' copper and 7 color. The core, 300' and 1 dipsy did not take a fish or a hit that I know of but the other rods performed well. We took 7 Lakers home between 4 and 7lbs. SD/F setups were the hot ticket for today. I could not get a spoon bite to save my life. Temp down 40ft was 52 to 57 almost all day and we traveled a good portion of the lake. CrazyB*tch did well on my 475ft copper. I lost a big laker on the dipsy. It peeled about 40 ft of line on the initial hit. I tried handing the rod over but everyone wanted me to reel it. Well after a long battle I got it up to the surface and we got a fairly good look and it was a giant laker but twenty ft from the boat the hook pulled out of its mouth. It was just floating on the surface so I took over the helm and turned my what was now 9 rod spread on a dime I don't know how I did not get a tangle out of that but I did not. Ben jumped up on the bow to net the fish but just as we pulled up to him the fish went down I really would have liked to weighed the fish but it gets to live another day and might be a money fish this weekend. Everyone had a blast! The fishing was slow at times but for the most part it was steady on the lakers. Weeds were not too bad but they did get thick in some spots. Fleas were also not bad but did get to be a pain in my A$%
  17. I have the Hds 7 but its the same transducer. I too run 10lbs balls. I find that most days I can't see my balls because of blow back but depending on speed and currents all 3 will be in view. You can reduce blow back by using heavier weights. You can also angle your transducer back further but I don't like doing this. I just like know my exact depth. You should be seeing them on the drop down. I generally run 1.7 to 2.4 mph at the ball to give you an idea. At 1.7 you should be seeing your balls on the screen. I don't know how long your booms are on the downriggers but I would adventrure to guess I keep mine 30 in. off the back of the boat. If your extending them out further that could be your isssue. Also the deeper you run the more blow back your going to have. I run my sensitivity 80 to 92%. Hope this info helps.
  18. One of the reasons behind using 50lb flurocarbon is because of the stiffness. It gives a good whipping action to the fly that has better results then most other options. After every catch you should be checking your fly and leader. I keep a container on my boat with pretied leaders just in case. The only probelm with flurocarbon is the price. 25 meters runs between 17 to 25 dollars.
  19. WTG! I must have missed this report and you did a great job. Thank you.
  20. Great job! I bet your dad had fun. How was the weeds?
