It is a state by state agreement and semi new development
"Now what do you do? Well, if you took a safe boating course in the last several years, some of the information you got about stopping, and boarding a vessel has changed. In years gone by, the only agency that could stop your vessel and board it, without a search warrant was the Coast Guard. Well, this isn't exactly so anymore.
Several states have signed compacts with the Coast Guard in this post 9/11 environment, whereas the Coast Guard has delegated some of their Federal powers to the state. Specifically, they now allow state law enforcement (and those state powers flow down to the local law enforcement officers) to board vessels.
So, now that we know that the likelihood is that the non-Coast Guard officer is mostly likely allowed to board our vessel (check with your state), what do you as the vessel captain do? The same exact things as if you are driving a car."
I would think it would be illegal for them to board you without consent but they can ask you to show proof of compliance with the law
Also as far as checkpoints go they are clearly legal but I'd be curious to know if you actually have to roll your window down and answer any questions.
I fished all weekend from longpoint to power plant.... Ran the big board literally 5 foot off the docks... Many many better than average lake trout... Few shaker salmon and some very nice smallmouth
Boat was in 13 fow ish inside board was in 3-4 fow
Morning surface temp was 49-51... 55 by afternoon
I fished some deeper mark with no bites... A lot of bait and fish down over 250 still
Father in law with a couple.. and ps perch fishing off the dock was unbelievable
