My ultimate glow spoon charger box
Captain Carl Bish replied to vetting's topic in Tackle and Techniques
The purple glow spoons are great, to my knowledge only one company makes them as the formulas for the paint are proprietary. I will typically run carbons, green jeans, ratchet jaw and geezers in the early morning and switch over to nurple's, little bruisers, mad man and razor burn as the sun gets higher. This may have to do with the fact that the charge on the lures is greater after some time in the sun. BUT,,,,,don't over think it! Some mornings I will stray from my norm and start with a bruiser and not be able to keep it in the water. We are dealing with organisms with a very small brain and a tendency to think chunks of metal look like food! -

Very cool, exactly what is needed for purple nurple s or bruisers in the morning! -
We will see what happens when I replace the drags. I've never had a problem with the 47s. In case I mis spoke on my issue.....it only occurs when it is cold. March and April cold. The same reel that did not work in the early morning will work fine at 10 am after sitting in the rod rack exposed to the sun.

Scotty versus cannon versus Big Jon
Captain Carl Bish replied to Trorun's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I have purchased Cannons, Big Jon's, and Scotty's in the last 5 years. I ran cannons from 1982 until 2010 when I purchased brand new top of the line DT's. I installed them early July and they did not work correctly. I called the manufacturer, their solution was for me to send them to them and they would have them back to me after Labor Day! I explained that I needed the equipment to operate 60 charters before then and they expressed that was I problem I would have to handle. I did so by replacing them with Big Jon's but they could not hold up to my fishing demands, the company was very supportive. While I don't like the looks of Scotty's, they are great riggers; fast, durable and efficient with very few problems, responsive customer service. I recommend them without reservation. The above comments represent the experience I have had, agree with above posts. What you are buying is the backing of the company.....15 years ago that was a no brainier and IMO it is as well today, but not the same company. -

If there is color in the water I run a 4 X 4, four down four back, spoon standard size, moonshine ratchet jaw was the one I ran last spring. Silver orange, fire tiger, gold have all produced in the past. Way back in the '80's we ran blue and silver looters for cohos in this manner. It is awesome when this rod pops! Usually the 4 X 4 fish are larger than the day's average. CC

Anyone know where they archive a history of Lake Erie temps for past years? Early ice melts on LE means good salmon fishing along the entire southern shore in April/ May.

Dave, Is the spool issue one that is persistent or can it be intermittent like my situation....only in the cold?

Favorite vs worst fishing conditions

Great post Mark! -
After work I called my buddy Ed to see if he had his boat ready & to get a current condition report, he informed me he was ready to go and the lake looked good with a slight south breeze. I called my son to see if he wanted to go, he did so we headed up to the lake and got on the water at around 5 pm. The first fish hit the first line out, before we even got the planner boards in the water, the second was not much later. We fished for just over an hour with consistent action in the west bay. 7&9 Rapalas were on the menu in hot steel and bleeding copper. Our final fish of the evening was a steelhead al the rest were browns. Water temp in the west bay 38.8 to 40.2, east bay 38.8. Speed did not seem to matter much as long as we stayed < 3 mph. It was the kids 13th birthday, it was great that Ed took us out to have a little fun ( even though his face doesn't show it in the pic).

These reels do not work for me in the cold <40 degrees, drags just have no tension like they are in free spool. Work great when warm! Anybody else have this issue or fix?

Favorite vs worst fishing conditions
Captain Carl Bish replied to DJ 17's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I like a building east wind to about 15 mph in the middle of summer caused by an approaching low pressure system.........these conditions present a challenge.....the rest of the time it is just too easy! -
Yesterday's sun told me to go fishing so I got up this morning and quickly put the little boat together. Got on the water just after noon. The east bay was choked full of ice and the west bay was littered with debris, we continued west to the pump house where we found a mud plume from shoreline runoff. A nice class of brownies were feeding in the plume and we worked over the area until 2:30 landing and releasing plenty of fish. Rapalas in size f7 in bleeding copper were the bait of choice. We fished 6 to 14 fow, speed was just right and temp was good enough. (No gauges on his boat) Fish were aggressive hitting flat lines at 60' and planer lines out to 120'.
