  10. As a teacher in a small inner city high school (800 students)in a large city I have no desire to carry a weapon. I have had a protection carry permit for 25 years, worked as a college security officer for 3 years, have had training in use of force and use of deadly force, but still I do not want to carry in my school. I do think our building security officers should be armed and upgraded to peace officers. I also make a point of thanking the BPD officers that visit our school daily. I would like to see a bullet proof door on the closets in our classrooms I think getting the "targets" out of view would save lives. Perhaps the most effective measure that could be taken would be the refusal to publish the names or any details of any perp of mass violence. For the CN & Webster shootings the whole scoop on the shooters should have been "lone gunman found dead at the scene". Then the rest of the story could focus on the victims if there need to be any reporting of it at all!
  11. I'll tell you........it is way too late for the state to try to get kids to hunt. When I was a young teen in the late '70's there was nothing for me to do but run around the woods in the fall, I would go with my dad and be the "dog" as he shot pheasants and wood cock! I could not wait until I was 14 so I could hunt....then when I turned 16 I was rearing to go so much so that when my dad killed 2 does with one shot that opening day... I would not give him my doe tag for it...I wanted my own!!! Today the kids have way to many alternatives to hunting and fishing. Sports is one of the biggies that take up fishing and especially hunting time. 1048 cable stations, video games and the internet keep them up too late to get up early the next day. This past year I fished 93 days commercially and about 15 days privately, my boys 19 and 12, have no interest being on a charter boat, but did fish about 10 of the private days with me, hunting -- forget about it!! I hunt almost every day of the season and they have NO desire to go. The older one will buy his license only if he is seeing deer in our field and he thinks he can sneak out and shoot one, I don't think he could stand in the woods for more than 15 min let alone stand still for 1 min. The younger boy.......last summer a woodchuck was in the back yard along the wood line eating grass. I of course hurriedly grabbed the 10-22 loaded it, asked him if he wanted to shoot it (he is a good shot) opened the glass door and handed him the gun, he looked down the site and looked back at me and said. "Why am I shooting it Dad?" I stopped and thought about it: "I'm not going to eat it; it is not harming anything-it lives in the woods and has never ventured into the garden....much closer to the house; If it didn't dig holes I would have shot every rabbit on the property long ago." So I simply replied: "I have no good reason." and he replied "I really don't want to shoot it then." Now I could have said what my Dad would have said: "Because it is still there and we kill all the woodchucks!" BUT my son would not have accepted the validity of that answer and found more enjoyment in watching the animal feast on the clover and drive the penned up beagles crazy all summer. Now that he is 12 he shows no interest in taking the hunting course or heading into the field. I have already traded away 3 shotguns that I was holding onto as hunting guns for the boys in about 5 years I be down to keeping only their heirloom guns from their grandfathers. Back to the subject......Too little too late, but let them at it!! The norm will mirror bailey's post and tall tails post will be the aberrant. At the end of the day it is not all that important that our sons be hunters or fishermen, what is important is that they become honest, trustworthy, responsible men, husbands and fathers!! (May God Help Us!!!)
  12. Don't be afraid to try a walk on/pick up trip. You simply sign up at the marina and pay your share of the boat. The captains can identify true fishermen and will work hard to put "good" fish on when your turn comes up. Something like we do up here, when it's Tom's or Ray's turn we drop to the bottom -- oink... when the next guy is up we fish just above the bait where the big guys are!!!
  13. Rick, What a crazy day Saturday was!!! The conditions should have been perfect, enough chop to keep the small boats off, overcast and slight rain..............this was the kind of day us combat fishing wall anglers live for!!! In past years we have filled boxes on days like this, as you posted it was a very tough day, I did not talk to anyone that caught more than 1 salmon!!! Oh well.............. I guess we caught them all in the summer!!
  14. From my limited experience, I can tell you that I prefer big game 20# and 30# for riggers. For board lines I use 30# power pro with 12# trilene floro. I think I can count all the fish that we broke off (rigger rods) this year on one hand and that includes fish that ran and wrapped the riggers -- we were 9 for 12 on them. I rarely use florocarbon after June 1st on the rigger rods, I just tie directly to the lure/swivel using 20# for spoons and 30# for flashers. This year we no problem with fleas on either pound test, but it was a light year for fleas. Price is another reason for using big game -- I can fill 2-3 reels for $10 (Walmart). I simply have no reason to try any other line. I'm not a very good fisherman so I have to make sure that when I do get a fish to hit my line is tough enough to get the fish to the boat!!
  15. Can you use a blacks release with a sub-troll? I wish I was a good enough fisherman to handicap myself with less expensive, less dependable gear!!!
  16. The Trax riggers look nice, and what was said about the riggers that are paid for and work fine are hard to replace was right on as well. The only rigger that I would sell a scotty for and buy right now is one that will find the bottom and track it with the weight. Cannon used to make one (rigger & depth finder all in one unit) and it worked for me -- I sold it to buy their new one -- BIG mistake. If Trax added this feature I would have one next spring!!
  17. Big Water, Why don't you just go out into the lake and catch a bunch of bait? Depending on where you live you may even be able to take them home and freeze them. You certainly could freeze them and leave them at most marinas, campgrounds/motels along the lake.
  18. From my limited experience on the lake, I have found that Blacks and Big Game work great together. When I want to run a lighter line on my "tight" Blacks I use a half hitched rubber band set into the release. My recommendation would be to save some money and switch from XT to big game, if you don't like the increase in diameter simply go with the next lighter pound test, what you are after with the big game is the abrasion resistance.
  19. Oh, Come on guys!!! Ray's whole post was 'cause he was sooooo happy that he knew more than Clint. From what I've heard --- Ray can do that to himself!!!!
  20. Brian, I thought of you typing that post..........it is just plain smart to target hog TROUT like you do...Congrats!!! Your name is not very descriptive of your methodology, but don't fix what ain't broken!!!
  21. Keep your set up simple 2 riggers; add 2 Wire dipsys if you think you can handle it. When you hit a fish keep your heading and pull as many lines as you need to until you get it figured out. I know many of my clients that fish the walleye like to tighten the drag down to stop the fish from running, they are usually effective as I am sure the fish stops after the loud snap.
