  1. Nice job. Congrats. Chq is my home lake...I’m there almost every weekend unless I’m on a trip to Canada. We tried to cast most of the day Saturday but the wind made it pretty tough to fish where we wanted to. Switched to trolling Saturday afternoon and stuck with it through Sunday. Seems like it was a pretty decent weekend for catches. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  2. Where do you intend to fish? What kind and size of baits are you going to run? If you are going to fish the St Lawrence around Lake Ontario and Clayton, NY I'd say the advice above is good. Use mono as backing under the braid on your reels. If you are fishing elsewhere, my advice may be different. I use a few different types of trolling set ups depending on time of year, where I'm fishing, and what size/style baits I'm pulling.
  3. Congrats on your catch. Don't sweat it. You seem to have the right attitude and try to be better prepared and have a successful release next time. Muskie fisherman can be pretty passionate/dedicated and can often come across the wrong way. Don't let it deter you from joining a Muskies Inc Chapter if you really like muskie fishing. There is a ton of information and friendships that can be gained. There's an unbelievable amount of detail to learn and some exceptional muskie anglers that you can meet. It does seem like too many guys just get information from the internet (facebook groups) these days on how and where to catch them without being properly prepared. It's one of the things that's kept me from posting much the last couple years. We all started somewhere. I've been at it 20 plus years and have handled/released close to a few thousand now. I'll admit I still kill a couple most years...it happens. When you start, you want pictures of everything. Use a big net to keep the fish in the water to unhook. Only take it out of the water for a few seconds for a couple pictures and get them right back. The bigger the fish and the warmer the water, the tougher the release will be. Most days now, I don't net anything unless they are too big for me to unhook in the water with pliers while holding the leader, and I want a measurement and a picture. When I'm lucky, that's for my daughter when she joins us in the boat. Most everything under 45" gets released this way now for me, but nothing wrong with having a good release practice and getting a picture. Good luck.
  4. Pretty cool. Easiest recognizable marks on that fish for me are the “MT” on its cheek. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  5. Asked a friend...water temp was 78 North this morning Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. Not really sure I’d consider July 13th late summer. These tourneys are scheduled early in the year to obtain permits and for people to plan. NY chapter just had a huge tourney two weeks ago. I know I saw temps over 80 south prior to that tourney. I dont expect Three Rivers to have near that turnout. Id say late July/August usually have the highest potential for higher water temps. Either way, im not entering the tourney but I will be fishing. Last weekend I water released all but a couple fish I wanted a quick pic of for my daughter. Water temps North were around 77. Experience handling fish is the key. Netting big fish and taking lots of pics in hot water is a bad combination. Im not sure what water temps are today but air temp lows in the 50s the next several days. Highs under 80 all but Saturday. Will probably be fine, but like I said experience handling fish properly (especially bigger fish in warmer water) is key. Also...not just tourneys to be concerned about. There are quite a few muskie guide boats pounding it hard every day out there now. Usually 5 plus guide boats there every day I’m out. Clients always want pictures. 10. https://www.cabelas.com/product/Navionics/1580199.uts This is what i run in my lowrances. Just bought a second card for my bow unit for casting since i dont have it linked to my dash units. This is definitely what you want for the Larry. As long as it is compatible with the Hook. I run HDS’s. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. Heavy tension with those baits at 5mph may not be enough. You could use rubber bands instead of releases. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. For me, lures are most important for both casting and trolling. Rods and reels are probably equally important next. Rods are probably more important casting than trolling though. It’s important to match your rods and reels to baits and casting applications. Not going to want to throw a pounder on a 7’ mh and not going to want to reel in a double 12 with a Abu Garcia 6500. Most trolling applications i prefer a glass rod and a good line counter reel with cranking power and a smooth drag. Although I like Okuma Catalinas for most of my trolling, I think Shimano casting and trolling reels are the best built/longest lasting. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. Nice fish. Congrats. In my experience, tigers are shorter than pures of equal girth and head size. Tigers have shorter tail sections or something. I’ve handled lots of fish (way more pures than tigers)and I’m a very good judge of size in person, but some pictures can be deceiving. I think old mans guess is pretty good. Id say your fish is about 40”. Could be 42, could be 39. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  15. My season started in March, but... Spend quality time with my dad on the water. Continue to teach my daughter how to catch muskies, what's important about the sport, and have fun doing it. Continue to learn new Canadian water and techniques. Just fish and stay away from the drama, internet experts, online bashing, and overpriced lure sales/raffles/collecting.

  17. You’re welcome. Walleye guys that run tiller kickers don’t have the issue we had. Plus, like i said, i think they have a better solution now. How do you intend to fish with the kicker? Thats what you need to consider. That rig looks very nice though. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. Good luck with the boat. I have a friend with a 196 Fishmaster. It's been a great boat for him. We had a 250 Verado on our 2007 Lund that we bought new, however, we got a new boat last year with Yamahas. The Verado is a very nice, reliable engine. Has to be the quietest engine made, no vibration, etc. Super powerful, fast, and responsive with digital throttle. The verado electric power steering is very nice (can drive the boat with one finger) but it had a big drawback for us. We trolled on our kicker that had a tie bar to the Verado alot, and the power steering drew more power than the alternator on our 20hp kicker could keep up with. We would have to start the big engine to charge things back up every so often. As a result we had nearly 3000 hours on our Verado when we sold the boat. It still worked great though. I know we didn't have the best set up...they have a better system now to compensate for the power draw. But if you intend to troll with your kicker tied to the verado, make sure it has an isolator and a battery just for the kicker. I think you'll want a big agm battery for the verado too. (i think that's the best solution now). It's worth asking the current owner about if you want to troll with your kicker to keep hours off your main engine.
