  1. We run candle stick weights on rigs. I put a slight bend in the weight which keeps it from rolling while trolling. Before I started doing that sometimes the leaders would be all wrapped up on the main line when it comes back in.
  2. When you put the new 9 volt in the probe, spend the extra $$ and buy the best battery. I believe I put a litium battery in mine. Also pay attention when you open the probe, there should be no water inside. Make sure you put some vaseline on the probe seal to seal out water. I had to go to a 12 lb torpedo weight when I added the probe to keep it from hanging too far back.
  3. I bought a set of Cannon Mag 10s and used 10 gauge low voltage lighting cable. I rewired the downriggers while I was at it. Then then plugs are 30 Amp extension cord ends, because there's no way to mix up Positive and Negative with the ground plug.Other than that the ground prong does nothing. I added a fuse block near the boat batteries to connect everything to. It works great.
  4. I know Charter Lakes covers Charter boats very reasonably priced. I don't know if they insure pleasure boats, but it wouldn't hurt to ask them.
  5. When shopping for Charter boat Insurance check out "Charter Lakes Insurance". They know the business we're in because that's all they serve is Charter boats. Their price was the best I've found.
  6. You might as well. Then you can get full pay. Getting the license is a pain but well worth the hassle and the time. Good luck. Aslo be careful about saying online that you take anything from passengers til you have your license. Someone will see you as unfair competition and call USCG on you. 7. I too got my OUPV License through Sea Tech Marine Training. They give classes all over the North East. I think it was in "Chapman's Piloting" I read, that if someone comes on your boat and offers you half of their sandwich, it could be considered by USCG to be taking compensation without a USCG License. What you're doing would definitely be seen as illegal by the Coast Guard. Trust me, they don't care what you're doing with the money. They don't care if it goes in the gas tank, or you give it to your wife for groceries. It's the fact that you're taking compensation without a license that will get you burned. A few more tips for you. The insurance MUST be Charter boat insurance. Regular liability insurance won't cover carrying passengers for hire. If you have an accident, and the insurance company gets wind of them paying to fish, they aren't going to pay. Insurance companies are saving big bucks by paying investigators before they pay out claims. If you do decide to go through the licensing course, take the CPR etc that they offer. I say that for two reasons. One, the class is geared more toward onboard emergencies than land based classes. There are questions on the test regarding those emergencies. Second, I am a certified Professional Rescuer instructor for American Heart Association CPR and First Aid. I teach Fire Fighters and EMTs CPR, so I didn't take that part of the class from Sea Tech when it was offered. I found out after submitting my license application to the USCG that they don't recognize AHA as an approved CPR certification agency. At the last minute I had to pay $100 for a Red Cross CPR class, 25 miles from home. Third, The USCG plate on your boat says you can take a certain number of people on the vessel as a pleasure craft. But, unless it was built as a USCG Inspected vessel at every stage of its construction, from the moment the keel was laid, you can only take 6 passengers for hire, no matter how many the plate says, or which level of USCG license you have.
  8. Those Crappie should be showing up around Watkins area soon. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I547 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  9. It's no secret the perch are at Sampson. The whole marina is mobbed with fishermen. It's crazy. Out in front from a boat just outside of the shore caster's reach is where you want to be. The bait depends on the day and the weather. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I547 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  10. Lodi boat launch is open and ready for boats to launch. Keep your eyes open for Big chunks of ice out there. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I547 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. I haven't been down there in a while but I'm sure Lodi marina and boat launch are iced in. Most times the snow isn't plowed at Lodi unless I plow it.
  12. I use my old Sub-Troll 900 to tell temp and speed at the ball. I have my GPS SOG that gives me a starting point if for some reason the probe isn't in the water. Aside from that, I don't much care what my surface speed is.
  13. If you do decide to winter fish there, go on a warmer day, and fish the run off coming out of the creek mouth. Heads up, the pier there is often covered in a thick layer of ice in winter. Also in late winter check out the view of the ice formation around the upper falls. It's something to see after it's been cold for a while.
  14. 3 waterfowl hunters and their dog were rescued from atop of their overturned boat on the North end of Cayuga Lake this afternoon. None of them were wearing life jackets. It was a very scary situation as Seneca Falls Fire Dept worked the cold water rescue.
  15. Where is this boat? Can you post some pics of the inside? Jim
  16. If your lower unit oil is milky you should drain it completely as apposed to topping it off. I guess it's possible that the water got in past a bad o ring but I really think you have a bad prop shaft seal. You'll want to get whatever it is fixed ASAP. Sooner or later your lower unit will suffer from inadequate lubrication. That will be expensive. The other concern is cold weather coming. More than one lower unit has busted open from water freezing inside where the oil is supposed to be.
  17. Ovid Fastrac also has ethanol free 91. I think I paid 4.05 last time. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I547 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. I run 20# flea flicker on the rigger reels with an 8ft, 20# fluorocarbon leader. We get some fleas on swivels that will bind up the swivel if left long enough, but otherwise no problems with fleas.
  19. Something to consider is booking a Charter and seeing how it's done. Of course even us charter Captains each have our own way of doing set ups. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I547 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Captain Jim

Disregard. Didn't look at page 2.

Did I miss this price? What are you asking? Jim
  22. I use braid on my dipseys on the finger lakes with 20 lb flourocarbon leaders. Yes the fleas love the braid. I haven't had any problem with break offs of either line.
  23. We fished Cayuga this morning. The south wind had a good chop on the water. Fish are spread out. No one hot spot really. Running just 6 rods, 4 downriggers and to magnum Dipseys. We boated 23 fish, mostly just legal that went back in. Lakers and little Land Locks and one Rainbow. Kept 7 Lake trout in the 3 to 5 lb class. The hot lures were small black NK spoons with red or purple tape and a chrome back. Downriggers were 40 to 75 ft. Dipseys back 200 ft. All caught several fish each. We picked up a few fleas but not a big problem yet. Weeds were more of a problem on the West side as expected. Our other observation was we marked a ton of bait schools. The thermalcline is really set up in some areas, especially out in deep water. It breaks from 71 down to about 57 dgrees. Up north it was up to 62 dgrees at 60' over 165' bottom.
  24. That made a day of scouting things out, that much more enjoyable. Congrats to Rampage. Hopefully we can catch some more of those rainbows this weekend. Good Luck, Rod Father (Jim)
