  1. A good hook for the money is an Eagle claw LS 374 . I like the 1/0 size for a standard NK 28 or similar . Also for meat heads and I replace At least the Rear hook on a #4 j plug . I use a 2/0 on Mags . Balance is everything . Generally try to match what came on it to be sure . They are sharp , don't bend and are reasonably priced. Sometimes the fish are hooked so good , i have to break the hook to get it out . I like a bronze hook on a black or dark spoon , but I don't know if it really matters .
  2. I may buy one to customize my rigs . You can also freshen up your stick baits by spraying a coat or 2 of lacquer . Gets rid of that tackle box rash . Some very fine steel wool does wonders Goof off or paint thinner takes off tape residue . You can always paint the front of the spoon all black and make spooks or laser spooks or glo green tape , etc.
  3. X2 on the Oak Sandy area. Lakeside and Hamlin beach state parks both offer camping . Bald eagle has a full service Marina and is in the center of both . The lake has usually set up by then and the mid summer fishing can be game on that time .
  4. If you really want to do it right , you need to strip off the finish coat first . It can be lacquer , or epoxy coat . I use strip ease or something similar. Then you can use car polish or x fine steel wool to shine it .the tumbler would probably be great for this . I will then clean of the wax with paint thinner rag for a good bond for paint . I paint with spray cans although I wish I had an air brush . Then a few coats of clear . Usually lacquer. Put on tape if you want . They come out like new .
  5. Found out I may be going on an in law family trip to Estes park Colorodo early Summer . I know fly fishing trout is the deal there Any insight , hit spots , equipment , flies , would be appreciated .
  6. I remember way back when fleas first showed up . We were getting this stuff on the line I thought was cottonwood . Fished Mid Aug every day for a week as my buddy was up , it was a real problem the first few days . Captain's were on the radio ( this was before cell phone ) complaining about it . You would see mates on the back off the boat slapping the rods hard down on the water . Couldn't reel fish in , you know the drill . I noticed I wasn't getting it on my cables. Figured it was the wire or diameter . So that night I took 2 rods ,stripped off some line and spliced 150 section of the 40# line I used for squid leaders . Next day , no fleas ! Did 2 more that night and problem was over . After listening to captain's on the radio , I got on and shared it .They blew me off . Told a mate that morning in the parking lot and he procedded to tell me how it wouldn't work . My buddy laughed and I shook my head and walked away . Shortly after that Cortland came out with Flea flicker . I used $2 49 spool of Mason mono ,which did 4 rods . Got on a website that was the predecessor to this one and told them and said remember you heard it from me first . Took a lot of crap about it not being sporting ,it would not work , etc. Guys were saying pink Ande ,spraying line with WD 40 etc for solutions . Now heavy line is standard procedure . It's satisfying to know I was the first to figure it out . No thank yous are necessary I was first,Me and a guy named Frank from the east end who I contacted . He told me he was using 40# because he did not want to loose his expense flasher And found out it wasn't getting the fleas .
  7. My fear is the way things are going , we don't turn into Canada .
  8. Footprints on back corner of my house I turned on my backyard floodlights and flashed my lights when I realized what was happening. Which I think stopped him from going to my back door . And I did yell about 6 times. Loudly .
  9. I know all that . Which is reason for the pens . But the jury is still out and studies say that the pens don't have the returns hoped for . The fish are still imprinted to the hatchery water . Would love to see them raise some Calidonia kings again .
  10. I did not grab my weapon until I was sure it was not my son. And I lost sight of the guy And as I was loading it I thought of the guy in Hilton .which is why I did not go anywhere More than on my porch . And I know that I can't just start putting lead in the air . My attached garage has as way in to my basement and I was, worried about that . I never in my 61 years have ever been in the situation where I felt that in my home I may have to defend my wife and my life . And it is amazing the thoughts, and there were a lot, that go through your head when put in that situation . This whole thing lasted 8 to 10 min . Sheriffs response time was 10 min from the call . I was not military ( and thanks you guys for your service ) but I was surprisingly not scared a bit and was clear headed about the whole thing . And I felt a whole lot better once I had my trusty 1100 in my hand .
  11. I don't see a problem But we will see in 3.5 years . And most of you lake guys don't fish pier heads and trib kings .
  12. So I'm laying awake in bed last night at 4 am . Front of the house lights up . I get up and there is a car idle in the driveway half way down with lights on . Could not see what it was , thought it might be my older son . I live in the country with houses kind of close around . I see a guy get out and walk to side of my house where I loose sight of him . I open the door and yell at him a few times , no answer . I know it's not my son now so I go up and grab my 1100 and load with 00 buck . I tell my wife dial 911 I go out on the porch and yell again and see another car across the road on edge of my property line ideling . I held my weapon up so both could see it . Thought very strongly about firing a warning shot but didn't . I don't see the first guy and think he may be in my garage so I go back inside and open garage , gun first . Nobody there so I go back to front door to see the car door shut and car back out and leave with second car leave also . Nothing missing and fresh tracks on side of house . Did not try to get in my vehicles, or boats . Sheriff came and that's the story . As I was loading up I was thinking , man this could end bad .
  13. I really don't see the need for concern about this . If the kings get caught lake wide from where they are released , what difference does it make where they are penned? Also in the past they have been released early because of high temps , or so I'm told . And the released fish stay around the creek for a while and the flying rats feast on them as I have watched this happen . Would rather they drag them out in the lake and release them or from a helicopter or at dusk . My only worry is I hope in 3 years we have a good return of trib run fish as I like to fish them then . Before pen rearing , they just dumped them in and the fishing was great back then and kings were in every trib . I guess we will see .
  14. Any chance they change their minds ?
  15. I'm done ? Leverage ? The DEC made us done . And we have no leverage . And never really did. I hate to loose the kings but I hope Nat reproduction will make up the gap . I guess we will see . I honestly don't think it will make much difference anyway . The kings will be pen reared at other sights and just keep the steelhead at the hatchery another month and power feed them . Will be interesting to see the blowback with the reg change .
  16. And after thinking about it , I'm not surprised by this Maybe they are sending a message ....
  17. Talking Heads " Take me to the River " Or Jay Ferguson "Shake down cruise"
  18. I have used blacks, cannon,Roemer, walker,Mac Jack, Riviera . Those are what I remember . Now I use Offshore . I like them the best . You can adjust tension by how far back you pinch the line in the clip . When the pads start to wear you can replace them . The cable they come with allows the release to telegraph the hit of a small fish better than a black or one fixed on the rigger cable . Never tried a scotty power grip but plan to ..
  19. Also there is a,shortage of hockey sticks .
  20. Apparently our Gov has allotted a buttload of money for dredging. Sandy creek and Johnson Creek are two of many . With all the high water is anyone having trouble with getting in or out of port ? Is there some other reason for this I am missing ? Seems like a waste of funds .
  21. Last few years I park my probe at 48 to 50 deg . , with a flasher usually . On my other rigger I put a spoon , when i Run them , 10 ft below, and 10 ft above . So 20 ft.
  22. I'm am going to start making my own . Stay tuned
  23. Which is why I stopped watching a lot of the fishing shows In Fisherman and some others are good but most are a waste of my time .
