Volunteer opportunities?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know if there are any volunteer organizations looking for boats to volunteer? I really wanted to look into setting up a "give back" event for returning troops to take their families out for a free day of fishing, but I just havent had the time to do the legwork.

I'd like to give back a bit, anyone know of any organizations or events looking for help like this?

The DAV does these types of events. Might explore whether any are local. Nearest I'm aware of recently was last year down on lk erie / chautauqua.

Thanks Musky, I contacted the DAV headquarters as well as the Rochester DAV.

Let us know what you find out. I had some of the same thoughts after our company sponsored a take a soldier fishing event in Lousianna last year. The company chartered 15-boats and we had a lot of fun fishing for red fish and trout with a big cook out afterwards. The soldiers really appreciated it!

A derby for fun would be a lot of, well fun. I'm sure we could find somewhere in Sodus to have a barbecue as well. Hopefully I'll hear back from DAV.

Ok so I just got a call from Project Healing Waters. http://www.projecthealingwaters.org/

"Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and veterans through fly fishing and fly tying education and outings."

I talked to them about taking vets fishing and they were extremely appreciative of whatever we can give. I didn't really think I had time to setup an event, but screw it, who needs sleep :D

Would anyone be interested in donating a morning to take a vet fishing? Project HW is fully insured so no worries there.

I'm thinking a Saturday in August, just a few hours in the morning. Then maybe a barbecue lunch, followed by a salmon fly tying workshop or a "how to cook your catch" seminar during lunch?

Here's a video of a trip they did to the salmon river last year, they had about 10 drift boats volunteer.

You might take a look at the website below before making a decision on the fly fishing group. Looks like some other guys have done this already and you may be able to talk with some of them for further info about what they know and have learned.

I have been wanting to do something like this for a year or two but my wife says this year may not be the year for me with the fishing trips I already have scheduled and a big elk hunt to B.C. this fall. We will see how the summer shakes out.

Captain Jim Jared (Shade Tree Charters) sets up the event that we run each year. It is thru Fort Drums Wounded Warrier program. We take about a dozen soldiers each year for a weekend the involves a bass club taking them on Friday, an escort by the Fair Haven Fire Dept to the American Legion for dinner. Lodging has been donated in the past by Screwy Louie's and Fair Haven Motel. Anchor resort has provided us their ground for the event. It concludes with a braggers rites salmon tourney on Saturday followed by a BBQ that is done by the dockers at Anchor Resort. We usually have 4 - 6 boats involved in the tourney. Jim is the guy with the contacts.
